yeah i know, kickstarter i am fagged but really hoping this one will take off.
That's a space station building game, not a spaceflight game akin to Freelancer
Space Ranger HD is the best space game
>There will never be a game with the same sense of discovery as atomic age scifi
it hurts bros
>Freelancer
>Sim
>2019, there are still no realistic (futuristic) space sims
>everything is a either a space trucker or dogfight fantasy
In reality space vessels in a fight would probably be hundreds of kilometers apart from each other. Hell, with todays AA technology dogfights are rarely a thing anymore. And freighters would be on a pre calculated fixed course from start to end, without the need of human input.
i-i like elite dangerous...
>space game
>space navies are treated as a practical military asset
just lob shit from orbit at the other planet like why send a gay ass ship
Why not just remake Freelancer
Realistic spaceflight doesn't make for fun games.
There are some sims like Orbiter, Reentry, and Children of a Dead Earth, but they're only truly enjoyable if you're an actual rocket scientist or are willing to become one.
Hard sci-fi is for fags anyways.
Because Microsoft are fucking jews and wont allow the game to even be sold
Interstellar Rift is actually pretty comfy, but flew under my radar for a long time. It has the ease and simplicity of a freelancer, with optional autistic depth and complexity. Just doesn't have the most vivid planets and for some reason people love to shit on it for the multiplayer.
store.steampowered.com
Evochron is also pretty good, but autism is required to play it.
store.steampowered.com
remakes are cancer
STAR CONTROL 2
The Yea Forumslancer guys are doing that.
>I want accurate space battle
store.steampowered.com
TL:DR:
>Dev decided that doing "a game" wouldn't ever be realistic enough
>Decide to just code *all the SPACE science !*
>It's up to players to assemble and find shit that actually work
It's extremely autistic tho.
Main conclusion seem to be "holy shit overheating is your number one problem, even before the ennemy's nuke" - which isn't surprising since it's already a problem on the way-less-active international space station.
>tfw miss freelancer and really want to play it again
>Just want to play multiplayer and raid neighboring sectors with friends again
>x is an autism simulator
>elite dangerous requires you to study quantum physics just to fly your ship
>star shitizen is more concerned with shiny animations and fps shooting than it is with making functional flight controls that arent confusing as fuck to learn
How did Freelancer get it so right? >simple and intuitive controls with sufficient depth to improve
>large open sector to explore
>tons and tons of ships and weapons to customise
>campy cheesy 90s sci fi story that takes you around the whole sector
>spooky as fuck hidden systems to discover
>GOD tier ambient OST and sound design
>modding community still alive today despite the game being abandonware
>Trent being the personification of Yea Forums autism
Servers are still up, nothing is stopping you.
If Discovery wasnt a cringe roleplay server I would play it but every time I do it makes me cringe
Such a shame because it's easily the best mod quality wise
>Elite requires you to learn quantum physics
Lol no
After a little while Elite is piss easy to fly in.
>just lob shit from orbit at the other planet like why send a gay ass ship
I guess because of the same reason today's conflicts aren't fought with nuclear weapons. Mutual destruction is an effective detterent.
You just have to do it in a sensible manner. Make it plausible but still fantastic. Sci-Fi literature is way ahead of video games and even movies in that matter. It's like the mainstream perception of the future is still stuck at the beginning of the 20th century.
Maybe if you have autism which I dont
how isn't elite dangerous simple? all you need to do is rebind the mouse and aside from WASD you only really use 3 more keys. the rest can be done from the overlay menu.
This.
youtube.com
It's like people missed the golden age when Freelancer was the FOTM.
Really? Where? Do i have to buy the game again?
Just roleplay user damn im sure theres good friendly none roleplay banter before and afterward its a good way to make friends
>Flying an arcade flight game now requires autism
This. Elite's problem isn't complexity, it's that it's tedious.
Just pirate the game. Who is going to care Microsoft?
Especially when they quickly patch out anything that will help you get engineering stuff or money fast. It's gay af.
I pretty much dropped the game when they started nerfing wing cargo and took out board flipping.
Well yeah
I mean, without grinding what does the game have?
In what way is it tedious, unless you are refering to the common grind gripe of "wtf a single mission won't give me a billion credits so I can buy the biggest and baddest ship within 2 hours"
>elitelet wants people to talk to him
No
Fair enough, but they could put the options in if you don't want to make it a second job. It's fun flying around with buds larping as space truckers or Dog the Bounty Hunter.
Actually fuck off forumdad
>How did Freelancer get it so right?
Because it wasn't focused on autism like every other space sims.
The truth is when chads make games in genres normally dominated by autists and virgins they're always millions of times better.
fuck, time to replay it again
I plan to speedrun this also once I finish my other speedrun goals. My estimate is about 3-4 hours, but it could go lower than that if I can find some cool fast routing options to level up quickly and blitz the missions
>Yea Forumslancer will never come back
im usually a buyfag but if its against microsoft why not
It doesn't matter if you're a buyfag if the game isn't sold anywhere.
Anyone else remember this 2D rip-off of Elite exclusively for 68040-based Macintosh computers that's somehow an objective 11/10 game?
Freelancer has arcade controls
Elite does not
Everyone does
Exploration. Streamlined controls that are fun to play with. Good graphics and a great atmosphere that is impressive in VR. Good amount of interesting planets to discover.
I don't understand why everything always has to equate into a grind these days. Why did people play counter strike back in the day for thousand of hours, before lootboxes and rank progression? Either you enjoy a game for what it is, instead of wanting to chase a carrot. You start with the best ship in the game and all you really do by getting better ships, is becomming a jack of all trades and not having to re-slot things around.
im already downloading the torrent user lol
but i want a free vpn, got one?
>epic store exclusive
Trainwiz is working on a sequel
Elite is by no means a simulator in any way.
Remember that decade Microsoft spent pretending this didn't exist?
>Torrent
You can get it off abandonware websites by just googling "Freelancer abandonware"
>exploration
I hope you're talking about Freelancer, rather than Elite Dangerous.
>Tfw you'll never be able to take a bounty In a bar
>Fly xxx solar systems away
>Land on planet
>Attack fps style where the bounty is.
Its all just space or fps, never a mix. It's a shame. I just wanna be a bounty hunter and mix up my space and surface warfare.
Its far more a sim than freelancer is
If you say it isnt then you either havent played freelancer or you havent played elite, pick one
>it literally is just straight ripping off Freelancer
Well I have to credit them for having the balls to try, even if they'll be sued to death.
Will Elite ever have actually meaningful content, or will Braben's vision always coat the game?
Scam Citizen will probably have this exact thing once it releases in 2257
You can also sort of do this in Elite Dangerous but you can't really get out of your ship on a planet, the most you can do is control an armed rover and pew pew some ground targets
damn user thanks
Fuck off. Every game needing an FPS mode is what fucked up Star Citizen. It's a space fighter game. It's about space. Not planets.
but halo 2 is the best halo user gtfo faggot
I want a game like space engineers, but on a grander scale and not buggy as shit.
>sued
Its abandonware user
I'm specifically talking about the Windows port dumbass. Microsoft released it to promote Windows Vista and then shitcanned it.
People always ask this, and the conclusion is always the same: it's because Freelancer takes the time to make space interesting.
I see that scam citizen had that ability. Looking at all the videos it seems to be the same underground bunker over and over for the last two years.
Maybe with another 200m, engine scrap, graphics upgrade, and 200 more years like you say. Even watched twitch streamers to try to get a feel and it's them just playing Elite Dangerous with that one mission, and sitting in a port chatting for hours.
Fuck, back in 2006 there was Inifinity Quest for Earth that accomplished what Star Citizen did with a dozen guys working in their free time for free, then they scrapped it and kept the space fighting as it's own thing.
Having a wider variety of game play than every other First Person space trucking simulator is what I want. I dont give a shit about graphics.
Unless they wrote it off as a tax loss it's not officially abandonware and Microsoft still owns the rights.
but X3AP has already outdone it, hell, even TC did, mods are just make icing on the cake with shit like litcube's and the various total conversion mods
X is only good as a weird janky RTS and empire builder. If you want to fight aliens or explore space in any of them it's hot german garbage.
>still no game set in the Orion's Arm universe
yall niggas ain't even sophonts
it's great for both, there's a lot of varied weapons, flight model could use some work but X4 is a lot better in that regard, and there are hundreds of unique sectors on top of procgen stuff for the late game, not counting the mods that add tons of unique stuff
>tfw no game like X but with a much bigger focus on exploration
Every X game is weird janky euro trash
Not even close to the levels of comfy that Freelancer has
Have you tried Elite Dangerous? It might scratch that exact itch
>procedural generation
Into the garbage it goes
>it's great for both
Maybe if it's the only space game you've ever played, but Freelancer is by the far the king of exploration when it comes to space games. All this modern shit like Elite and X4 doesn't even come close, and the only people who believe otherwise are the most sheltered forumdads out there.
X when it comes to exploration is especially bad. All the systems had predictable exits, they're "unique" in the sense that they're hand made, but there's never anything interesting about it. No stories to be found, no unique sights to see outside of the rare asset that's tied to a plot about bringing back fifty million xenon foreskins.
And don't even listen to this boomer of a faggot. Elite's entire world is procedurally generated save for rare moments of hand-craftedness that, like X, amount to nothing. If you've seen one system, chances are you've more or less seen everything the game has to offer. The best they have is some worthless blackholes or the off chance that you find one whole Thargoid hive.
>mfw finding the unknown systems
Roleplaying is fucking gay you have to be pretty high on the spectrum to even be able to do that shit
Elite Dangerous is more of a sim than arcade, you can explore a lot of our galaxy in that game and space and other solar systems are pretty barren and desolate places. If you like flying, looking at pretty places, land on planets to mine some shit from time to time and generally just relax while you explore I think this game provides a great experience for that, it's very immersive and atmospheric.
I'm still reserving judgement until he goes into more detail on the actual world. Freelancer was nothing without all the little stories and lore tidbits that gave everything context.
You sound like a 40 year old shill who has no idea what people actually want in a space exploration game.
You probably are a 40 year old shill who has no idea what people want in a space exploration game.
freelancer is the exact same shit with vast open nothingness with a few shades of color and planets for different locales and a few setpieces that everyone loves to share scattered extremely thin, Elite is garbage as is X4 at the moment, but AP has some of the best exploration in space games with paragraphs of unique lore for each of the hundred areas not counting the procgen shit, each area also contains unique assets as well as setpieces here and there, and does it much better than freelancer with it's absolute garbage sense of scale
Roleplaying is inherently a social thing and is therefore pretty low on the spectrum.
>1293 views
imagine making that for years and getting 1300 views on it
must be a motivation killer
I miss it Yea Forumsros
youtu.be
>Freelancer is the exact same shit
And that's how you instantly can tell this poster is retarded.
Call me when your german masters manage to vaguely get something even close to stuff like and maybe we'll consider X something that isn't a eurojank simulator. But given that they tried to mimic Freelancer with X Rebirth and failed, I doubt we'll see that anytime soon.
Kill yourself zoomer theres plenty of shit to do in each system of Freelancer
I'm pretty sure he's only spent a year making it.
Only about a year and a half now, and the view count is about what I expected/am fine with.
kino
especially Yea Forumslancer
I don't give a shit what people want, all I'm saying is ED is a sim and it's very slow paced, obviously a very different experience to Freelancer. I only suggested this game to the user who was looking for an exploration game and I think ED is a very good choice if you don't have ADHD, if you don't like it that's fine, the grinding is fucking insane in this game and it sucks but don't be such a douchebag about it.
you gonna release that shit on steam or is it freeware?
Hey man
Looking forward to it
You should shill it more
and you can actually go to and interact with each part of the 1000+km station if you wanted unlike those jpgs in the background
you are guaranteed younger than everyone here because you use words like that
The game's pretty damn big, so I'm putting it on steam.
I was uncomfortable shilling it until it was at a certain point in development, which it is now so soon enough I'll start to shill it some more.
Just look at that dogshit UI
Are those Todd Howard billboards gonna be in
>and you can actually go to and interact with each part of the 1000+km station if you wanted unlike those jpgs in the background
Hahah you stupid faggot, you haven't even played your own game. You can't actually interact with that giant station because most of it is just for show, and going outside of that small flight area you posted means that you'll be shot down by superpowerful terran guns.
That station is also destroyed in X3 AP.
Epic mandalore bro xD
No but see it’s okay because the destroyed wreck has a whole German novel behind it.
Todd ate my newborn son, so I'm not going to risk antagonizing him further.
>The game's pretty damn big, so I'm putting it on steam.
cool man, if the game will be good I think you have a good shot at becoming a big indie like stardew valley, steam is severely lacking in good space sim
Aw man
Is it worth playing singleplayer?
I mean space sims in general are kind of a rare genre.
>space windmills
because theyve all been shit besides freelancer
what engine are you using?
I'd say no. Yea Forumslancer breaks some main campaign stuff, and I balanced everything around fighting and broventuring in multiplayer groups. Plus most of its new features require a server to run in the first place.
Hey when the galaxy is full of evil space weather you might as well profit from it. You'd be a poor trader with that mindset.
SPACE WINDMILLS
HOW DO THEY WORK?
Well yeah, there's this thing called solar wind you know, makes perfect sense
Children of a dead earth shows that there's fun to be had with realistic space combat, the game itself is just too autistic to enjoy.
Where does one play Yea Forumslancer
Unity, it's how I've been able to get everything done so fast.
Reactions to changes in underspatial pressure when storms pass through. They'll actually move faster if a storm's present in the system.
>>elite dangerous requires you to study quantum physics just to fly your ship
lolwut
elite is the one that's too simplified to enjoy.
steamcommunity.com
There's a server still up.
Elite Dangerous is fun for 200 hours and I wouldn't expect games to last longer than that. Well it's still fun but I'd rather play other worthwhile stuff too.
>elite dangerous requires you to study quantum physics just to fly your ship
more like 0 content
No there isn't. Do you have any idea when that was last updated?
What happened to your shooter rpg?
Too bad it takes ages to get anything, especially the reputation grind
>No there isn't.
There actually is if you browse the public server list. It's run by someone who isn't part of the Yea Forumslancer team.
>What happened to your shooter rpg?
Underspace was originally made to fund Nanosteam. It kind of blossomed into its own thing. Mind you it's only been a year and a half, but still. It's come a long way.
Elite is absolute garbage with forced online and grindan out the ass because muh real player economy and spacelegs taking devtime away from a proper game design
There's no/minimal friction in space though, the whole thing would spin as soon as the blades transferred power
Damn, always get these two webms mixed up.
>space sim thread
>no one has mentioned Noctis IV
>no one has mentioned Oolite
when the fuck did this board get so casual?
but space engine exists
Space Engine is a screenshot tool, not a game.
feels like tom clancys rainbow siz but with ships instead of anti terrorist squad.
>There's no/minimal friction in space though
There is in Underspace. See the windmills actually run by having their turbines take in raw disbelief and then suspending it.
If SE had proper gameplay then it would be a pretty sweet exploration game
>noctis iv's mouse controls
Don't fucking remind me.
Everyone's too busy circlejerking about Freecancer
Walk us through those two games user.
>forumdad bitter nobody wants to play Braben's vision
Because its a good game?
But how is the exploration?
I just started getting into engineering, and I feel like the tedium in mining and searching for materials is worse than the two weeks I spent putting across the galaxy on the Sagittarius A* run. Grinding the requirements for just access to the better Engineers is dull as shit.
download noctis IV CE and play it for as long as possible. this game has untold beauty
it's a primary part of the game. There's 70ish star systems, each one has at least one Thing meant to go on it. This is either some sort of gimmick (a system with mobile gravity wells, one that's just constantly exploding, etc), maybe a hidden boss, sidequests, and then many have what I call vignettes, which aren't in depth enough to be sidequests but are little unique stories that usually have some reward (even if it's just analyzing and learning their story for some cash). An example of this would be a space ghost train, where you could follow its trajectory and find its wreckage and the remains of the crew, and gain some loot in the process. If you're familiar with Yea Forumslancer, there's also secrets raids and dungeon systems that end up having mechanics and unique hazards there.
Noctis IV CE, or Noctis IV Plus? The guy says that it's better to pick the latter since it's a lot more polished.
are there any fan patches you need to play freelancer on modern shit or just go in vanilla
Jason's Freelancer Patch to play on modern systems.
>Space spoopin'.
I've never played freelancer but if it has cool shit like this I might be down.
Freelancer is one of the best games of all time. The only people who don't think so are the ones who've never played it, or idiots who hold contrarian opinions.
Oh there was some scary fucking shit in Freelancer, the corsair graveyards definitely took the cake there.
Noctis IV is a weird procedurally-generated space exploration sim for DOS that was way ahead of its time. The in-game galaxy is as large as the milky way and there used to be a way of synchronizing planets you discovered with a central server, allowing them to show up in other players' games with the names you gave them and whatever notes you wanted to include.
Oolite is an open-source Elite clone. I've played it, but I don't know much about it.
>procedurally-generated
aaaaand dropped
All hand made, no procedural generation?
So it was Noman's Sky
So how long of a game am I looking at here?
Yes but at least they made credits easy af to get now, and you don't need to farm that much rep in order to get access to good mods, just for the end-game ships. I don't even want to think about how much rep capital ships are going to cost.
Well it's the most fun I've had with garbage in years though, I would've preferred slightly more traditional game design with at least some sort of campaign as well but it's easy to lose yourself in it regardless. And I do like the limited online stuff, it's nice being out in the middle of nowhere and meet other player ships, makes for some nice tension that keeps you on your toes even if most players won't attack you that easily. Yes it could've been so much better but what we got was pretty nice and I still hope they keep at it and keep developing it further.
Noctis IV looks genuinely interesting user, even if the controls seem unconventional. So, you just explore around and scoop fuel from stars while sightseeing on planets?
Fairly long. Nice big main campaign, then you've got systems you can explore afterwards, or hop into multiplayer for that stuff.
Of course it's all handcrafted. I'm not an idiot.
Wait, they are adding pilotable capital ships? Shit, I might reinstall now and start grinding in preparation
Yes, but it came out in 2000, didn't cost anything, and was made by one guy who later released the source code so people could keep the game alive. When NMS was announced, my first thought was "this looks like Noctis, but worse."
Yeah, it's pretty much Space Engine for DOS. There's not much in the way of traditional gameplay.
Anyone enjoy Darkstar One probably more than they should have? Not a long game but fun enough.
Is there any fucking space games where I can fly about in a cockpit and not have every section of space timed? Honestly thought I would be able to chill in Everspace but it was fucking retarded.
Give me a game with this list.
>Explore freely
>Scavenge/trade/smuggle etc as well as combat choices.
>Hide instead of fight.
>Planets, stations and ports where I can actually walk about, repair, interact, upgrade with my ship/location.
>No forced timer/objectives.
Everspace had everything wrong with it. Oh you want to scavange a massive hulking wreck? Have some tiny asteroid with two crystals in it. Want to take your time? Well you've been here for two minutes, better throw some op space battle at you. Oh you want to try and hide? Well fuck you, the enemies can see you through everything and instantly detect your ship among the asteroid field. On top of all that, when you die you're upgrades dont take effect until you've upgraded each part five times and you lose everything but the money you found. Also, our story is utter trash.
Where oh where is my FUCKING CHILL SPACE EXPERIENCE!?
>When the Narcos have more firepower than the military.
Everspace is a roguelite and not a space sim.
i mean, between Space Station 13, Eve Online, X3:AP, Aurora 4x and Star Conflict we've pretty much already done everything there is to be done in the space genre/theme.
Most space games don't have timers. Most space games aren't like Everspace.
Eve Online my dude.
Skill into covert frigates, explore wormholes and get fat loot.
the game you are looking for was supposed to be no mans sky
this timeline is cursed
I have it, did not play past first hour and first modification of my ship.
No fucking shit man, but you go through the people that have played it and they all say "Oh, it can be roguelite, but you can do what you want if you want to chill" and its fuck all like that.
spacelegs are cancer and the X series has everything on that list besides that, the trash games Rebirth and 4 even give you legs to do meaningless shit with as well, the series is mainly about building a space empire in a sandbox so you can do trading, building, fighting, or whatever to make money and there's a story on the side that you can ignore if you want
Why was that era of sci-fi so fucking aesthetic?
Star Citizen unironically.
>space sim
>doesn't simulate anything
If you mod it with Discovery you can get 1000h+ of gameplay
All i know is that the redhead is very cute.
