Isn't this the exact cover that started Archie Sonic's downfall? I remember thinking it was pretty weird as a kid seeing on store shelf, but I didn't think it'd cause so much of a shit storm.

It's an urban legend that some Sega rep saw the cover and slapped Archie's shit in, which led to Penders and company getting the boot and Flynn and friends replacing them. In reality Archie was already restructuring the comic and Penders thought if he left Archie would beg him to return. They didn't.

tl;dr no. Archie had a drastic increase in quality not long after that issue and didn't get rebooted or cancelled until way later.

The myth started because it was such a stupid fucking cover coupled with the fact that Flynn's run started 5 issues after that. It's easy to say that Sega flipped a table on Archie which is why it had a sudden jump in quality on all fronts. Simple as that.

Sega started getting involved with the comic around the time Flynn and co. took the helm. They had more influence in the reboot since Archie used that as a bargaining chip to keep the comic from being pulled due to Penders' nonsense. IDW has the most Sega influence but it still has its odd quirks like pic related.

There is something particularly amusing to me about Knuckles OCs. It's like how CWC's Knuckles OC ("Punchy Sonchu") is literally just Knuckles in terms of look and personality.

Sonichu has absolutely nothing to do with Sonic after the first issue. It's literally just the Chris-chan Show with some Sonic recolors following him.

Oh shit you right. Of course TRUE AND HONEST Chris is STRAIGHT. Or something along those lines. The other thing I didn't consider is that Chris wanted to be the real star of the show, so if anything Sonic is HIS Tails.

Oh believe me, I'm perfectly aware. I just found it a bit odd. I mean, Punchy is a Knuckles rip off and he included a Shadow rip off later too, so to not see a Tails clone is a bit strange in hindsight.
