I got meme'd into buying a gamecube for Killer7 and RE4, then they came out for the PS4 so I jumped ship to sony and never looked back

Pokemon is still alright. It's got adventuring and turn-based battles and hundreds of weird creatures. It's mario that I don't get. It's a game literally for toddlers that offers no challenge whatsoever. And unlike sonymovies it doesn't offer a story either

Mario has some challenge to it, but I'm not a big fan of the series, I just know that there tends to be later levels or hidden ones that are actually difficult.

Pokemon has gone to shit imo, although it is easy to see why so many people adore it. Mario depends on the game, the best 3D titles have intricate movesets that reward skilled play and the 2D titles have good level design despite the newer ones handling worse than a wet paper towel. Then there are gems like 3D World that provide high quality backstabbing multiplayer, along with a large number of actual challenge levels postgame. I do wish they'd release more challenging games though, Odyssey had a disappointingly small amount of challenge content, most of the challenge comes from movement optimization and exploits.
