Borderlands solo is a lonely experience. Borderlands 2 solo, without your friends to talk over the fucking CONSTANT dialogue, is a grating experience. The Pre-Sequel is even worse than BL2 in this regard. If you don't have at least one friend to play with, it's hard to recommend the series. Even with one friend it's not easy to recommend since the best results come from playing with 4 friends on a regular basis.

I replayed 1 and I had the opposite effect. It made me appreciate the drop and stat randomization much better in 1 than in 2. 2's gimmick weapons can get seriously grating, but in 1 almost every weapon you get can be absolutely great.

The mod manager is just reading and letting you customize your patch file, you need to stick that in your binaries folder if you haven't already. Then you just use the exec command from in-game, unless your mod does some other weird shit.

Zer0 is the most fun character to play, also the most flexible.
Axton can get pretty crazy with the explosive tree and it's really reliable until UVHM.
Salvador is shit and you can play him by placing 2 rubberbands in your mouse.
Maya is cool but she has less options than lilith, no reliable melee build so you can only play elemental if alone or support in coop.
Krieg is fun as fuck and you can play him whatever way you like, just stay away from the fire breath skill, it sucks.
Gaige is cool if you like pet-style characters. Deahtrap's tree can turn him into a disgusting powerfarming tool.
