Swords are more associated with nobility, pikes and spears are peasant/line soldier weapons

They also don't work well indoors, and aren't really portable enough for your nomadic type character

Even skilled swordsman will lose to piddling spearmen

You do realize in real life infantry would not outright charge straight ashed at at pike-men.
Also pikes work in formation they are not as good in a 1 v 1 scenario especially in open combat.

Spears are only good in formations, so unless your protagonist fights in one a sword is an infinitely better weapon.
