How does confronting Thaos even stop the watcher from going insane? I thought you had become awakened to hundreds or thousands of souls, not just the one guy who wanted answers from Thaos.

Most awakenings end in insanity because there's multiple personalities all competing for dominance. Some souls however are "heavy" (how it's described in game) enough that they don't break down when they go through the Wheel though, and if they awaken they only awaken memories, because they are the same personality every time the reincarnate.
Basically the PC is like Thaos, except the stimulus for Thaos to awaken is everywhere, while the stimulus for the PC was much rarer.
