>Celeste released January 2018 and gained widespread praise for its challenging gameplay and emotional storytelling. Critics singled out the game’s Assist Mode in particular for its myriad of helpful accessibility options. Celeste is a hardcore platformer in the vein of Super Meat Boy, but players can choose to reduce the game’s overall speed, gain infinite stamina, become invincible, and more. The idea behind the mode is to allow less-skilled players, or those with physical disabilities, to enjoy the game in whatever way suits them. By contrast, Sekiro is tuned to a single, steep difficulty. Performing well requires a high-degree of reflexive skills and precision.
>One of those players is Matt Thorson, the creator of Celeste. As reported by PSGamesN, he took to Twitter to express that while he was loving his time with Sekiro, the game could stand to be a bit more inviting. His thread presents a list of possible options to feature in a hypothetical Assist Mode. Suggestions include reducing the combat speed and infinite Posture (i.e. the player’s guard). Later in the thread he suggests that this mode only be accessible from the main menu, per save file.
>Despite making a seemingly fair assessment, that hasn’t stopped many of the FromSoftware faithful from lambasting Thorson’s ideas as “game breaking.” Some say that the tough difficulty is what defines a FromSoftware experience - that the very presence of Assist options would ruin the entire game. Conversely, plenty of players and critics have joined Thorson’s rallying cry for accessibility options. Their main argument is that Sekiro’s alluring world and combat should be more attainable to those who neither possess the time nor physical ability to master its brutal challenge.
the game already has an assist mode. it's called firecrackers.
Camden Edwards
Celeste is a trashfire game.
Camden Lee
Why are they so intent on ruining games? Starting to make me hate disabled people too lmao.
Jacob Gutierrez
Celeste sucked, played it for 30 mins or so and it’s pure hipster garbage Only a total retard would give a fuck what he has to say
Asher Williams
Sekiro is on babby bitch mode by default. You need to ring the bell to even make it mildly challenging, but even then there's so much shit you can do to just cheese the game that it's almost as easy as Dark Souls 3 with its infinite rolling.
Benjamin Diaz
tldr
Gavin Brooks
the thing with sekiro's difficulty design is that it's very much like gothic. the game starts out seemingly unfair but as you learn the system and gain new mechanics like mikiri counter, firecrackers, umbrella, high monk etc you start to abuse these devices and use them gainst the game itself. theres so many flavors of cheese in your arsenal that the game becomes easy if you just put in the effort to make it easy.
Brody Nguyen
Pairing journalists with the disabled is an insult to disabled people. Any games with difficulty options should name their lowest difficulty modes "Journalist Mode".
Cave Story is a real 2D sidescroller, unlike shitty indie trash like Celeste with its separate levels and constant checkpoints with infinite lives.
Chase Myers
Jesus no wonder so many of you idiots are racist. Only takes a few weeks to hate an entire demographic of people based on what you see online. The difference between you and a disabled person is 1 bad accident, but I’m guessing you already hate yourself anyways.
Logan Stewart
>Getting emotionally invested in a Yea Forums shitpost
Stop this shit.
Thomas Howard
Nah Dustforce is miles better
Nathan Morris
Dustforce is soulless shit despite decent mechanics
Jose Bennett
>best 2D indie platformer i doubt it, but bragging about being the best indie anything is like being the tallest midget.
Liam Miller
People should be allowed to play easy mode so long as it plasters some kind of reminder that you're playing it every chance it gets. In menus, during fights, just big bold neon letters of "Pussy".
Joseph Kelly
lolno Dustforce has a fantastic OST and actually pleasant graphics with some genuinely good character animations Celeste is ugly as sin pixelated garbage. Not that "soul" even matters when you're playing a GAME
Levi Stewart
>Why are they so intent on ruining games? Liberals have no respect for creators or art.
Ryder Gonzalez
Why are you making the same thread again? Did you not get enough people calling you retarded?
Charles Campbell
>these guys spent more time making a game easier than just learning and persisting in the game
Isaiah Thompson
I wish these people would just be honest about being shit at games and wanting them to be easier for their pea brains instead of trying to co-opt disabled people for their bullshit
Nolan Parker
This. It has a huge difficulty wall when you first start out, but once you learn to play the game it becomes much easier.
Angel Robinson
Books and movies don't have to be made to appeal to everyone so why should games?
Cooper Anderson
I didn't say Celeste was better, I just said Dustforce is soulless. That's the other guy sucking off Celeste
I’m be glad if you died, a few weeks? It takes one abhorrently shit post for me to hate you.
Jack Barnes
It doesn't misunderstand anything.
Joseph Ross
Man, your post really made me hate people like you lmao
Jose Evans
Devs have the right to implement difficulty in the way they see fit. Retarded twitter trannies and games """"""""journalists""""""" should be lined up and shot for pressuring miyazaki to cater to their lack of competency.
Yes it does, it basically turns it into Castlevania with a different skin. The core appeal of GnG is the huge amount of unpredictable or random elements and interesting systems that give each run variety, from the highly random red arremer AI and enemy spawns, to random weapon drops to systems like Ghouls' chest system. Maldita Castilla has none of this, it completely misses all the things that made GnG exciting and is just a generic platformer. Play Ghosts N Demons if you want to know how a more polished tribute to GnG should look like.
Kevin Myers
This, also unironically. Fuck journalists.
Parker Bell
Actual disabled people aren't pushing for this. Someone post the video of the cripple beating monk without cheesing
Nicholas Lopez
In their opinion, it's the games that are ruining society! Disabled people should be tolerated and pitied but never celebrated, that is dysgenic.
Luke Cooper
You're making me hate humorless mentally challenged people.
David Bennett
>budget Meatboy with a female lead character
fucking yikes, nice b8
Nathaniel Morgan
>Group wants to only invite certain folks who are capable of meeting certain criteria >Some nobody chimes in and begs "I'd like for it to be more inclusive"
Fuck you if you can't accept that a game may not be for you. It's made hard for people to challenge themselves, not get their hands held through it. That's like asking for Tetris to only have l and square blocks, or like Pokemon only having master balls. Improve yourself, don't drag others down to your level. I know a dude with half a hand (right hand missing the pinky and ring finger, and part of the index finger) who beat all the different souls and soulslike games so far, and I've watched him do it for Bloodborne. He didn't let his hand, or lack thereof, hinder his enjoyment of a game; he got good instead.
Literally no excuse.
Andrew Brooks
Kill yourself tranny
Benjamin Harris
>Wooooow it's not exactly like old thing??? new thing bad! must play like old thing or bad?
Oliver Thompson
>Starting to make me hate disabled people too lmao. Why? They've done nothing wrong. Disabled people hate being infantilized, actually. They're probably more upset about these shitters using them as a shield for their own bad play than we are.
Dominic Nelson
I'm not familiar with folks suffering from what he's got. How was he showing it with his hands? Either way, if that is legit, that's honestly pretty inspirational. He got good at the game despite his unfortunate handicap. Shame people think being a gaming journalist counts as a handicap.
Joshua Long
>this game has soul trust me!!! >no it doesn't the dev's paying tribute to a game he doesn't even understand >WOW OLD GAME GOOD NEW GAME BAD low IQ response nigga
Liam Bell
>some faggot has opinions on some shit Yeah nah I don't care. FromSoft made Sekiro, they set the rules.
Juan Myers
your making me hate people who hate themselves
Bentley Cook
Celeste is actually a 1:1 ripoff of an old /f/ game Yea Forums created back in like 2005-2006
I can't for the fuck of me remember the name though, and the HDD I had it on got corrupted DURING a backupt. Was trying to hunt it down on /wsr/ but everybody here is so new, and I haven't gone anywhere. It's weird.
It's a game inspired by GnG, not a fucking copycat clone - I like what it does different
Parker Harris
DAILY REMINDER THAT EASY MODE DOES _NOT_ IMPROVE ACCESSIBILITY
Improving accessibility entails supporting custom key bindings, providing color blind options, possibly options to add visual cues for the deaf, and promoting the research and development of special controllers for the physically disabled. Improving accessibility does NOT entail diluting the game and telling the disabled that they can only play the diluted version of the game. That is actually discrimination.
Joseph Jenkins
Uh no sweetie stop being a bigot, people with your opinion (definitely not our alts) sent us death threats that’s how you know we’re right
Michael Long
What actually sets Celeste apart from something like Jumper
Andrew Jackson
This looks more like an N+ clone than anything but I remember what you're talking about. I'm almost certain it was 2008 though because I saw it when I first browsed this site.
Charles Baker
Yeah, the best accessability option is being able to rebind controls which should be a standard.
It's different to GnG but not in a good way since what it does is just take the superficial elements of GnG and build a completely generic uninspired platformer using them. A game that takes some inspiration from GnG and uses it to make something different is Volgarr The Viking which is way better.
Ian Martinez
Jumper doesn't have a story about abortion.
Noah Sanders
>infinite posture
Why even play From games if you hate challenge so much? What's next? Unlimited revives and heals? Knight armour? Having Isshin commit seppuku for Cinematic mode difficulty?
Anthony Miller
Volgarr is tryhard shit with its difficulty design, we're just not gonna agree here.
Jacob Perry
I don't mind easy modes for games like this, but I feel like the only reason things like this are a controversy is because it'd make reviewing the game much easier, and game journos/reviewers are the ones writing these kinds of articles.
Hunter Watson
lmfao
Kayden Edwards
>platform dev wants to theorycraft an action game
nah fuck off
Cooper Carter
Celeste is actually a rip-off of Jumper, a game made in 2004.
Xavier Jenkins
Nice wall of text. I like Celeste but you and the creator of the game can shut the fuck up. From will never add an easy mode to their persistently difficult games and people can either git gud or shut the fuck up and play something else.
Jordan Walker
The only easy mode I'll accept is infinite resurrections. Force those shitters to suffer through minutes upon minutes of just chipping away at enemy health, dying, rinse and repeat.
Ethan Smith
Tldr to people who don't feel like reading this article equivalent of s0imilk. Faggot has retarded ideas.
Nicholas Carter
>hehehe lmfao xDDDD owned
Cursed Castilla is hard but fair like Sekiro, but Volgarr is poorly designed trash - if you can't see that, you just like shit games in general
>reviewing game easier Sekiro's difficulty is an integral part of the game; it would be a completely different experience if even a couple of the suggestions were implemented as options, especially granting the player infinite Posture. Does this guy also whine about Soulsborne being elitist too?
Christopher Diaz
>"Waaaaah game too hard, add easy mode so I can feel like I did good!!!" Play a different game. I really don't get it. This shit was never an issue with any other From Software game. Why now?
There's not a single instance of unfairness in Volgarr, not one. The game even lets you zoom out the camera to see the levels well in advance, including all enemy spawns. You're simply a shitter user sorry to say
Jonathan Sanchez
Spoken like a true Deflect-let. If you actually knew how to defend in this game, damage is almost an afterthought after you completely waste boss posture with a perfect sequence.
Ryder Lopez
Sekiro is literally just a rhythm game. Fuck even easier because proper prosthetic and stealth use makes the game so fucking easy.
Is this just one massive practical joke or something?
Jackson Thompson
Explain your position.
Easton Barnes
>The game even lets you zoom out the camera to see the levels well in advance
So confirmed Sekiro is better because it doesn't have shit like this lmao
Owen Myers
>tranny, minorities, women are in video games >stop doing that I don't want that >It's just not for you. Play something else.
>game has 1 standard dificulty >stop it! divert effort, time and resources into making it easier, I don't want to learn to play better! >It's not for you. Play something else. >BUT THAT'S NOT WHAT I WANT GAMES NEED TO BE EASY BECAUSE I DON'T LIKE PLAYING THEM
Owen Parker
Jumper was made by Celeste's creator mattmakesgames.com/ There's also a game that looks like this on there
Jose Bell
Exactly. Shitters who don't know how to deflect will be forced to play a horribly boring version of the boss fights.
Carter Brown
>removes any sort of reward for improving yourself to meet the standard the game asks of you by just handing it to you I don't have an issue with easy modes as long as any time you play you have some ridiculous bullshit marking you for the whiny cunt you are, like the hat in MGS5. Some sort of giant watermark saying "I SUCK COCKS AND CRY ABOUT HOW BAD I AM AT VIDEO GAMES" would be fine too.
Lincoln Watson
>Faggots still crying and flinging shit at each other over stupid fromsoft shit
Y'all are a bunch of faggots.
Lucas Martin
I want to play violin. Make it more accessible. Also, despite there being 24 hours in a day I don't have the time to learn it.
Owen Jones
What, why would seeing ahead be bad? Sekiro's 3D though, the only limit is the tech (draw distance) and some objects blocking your way. Though you can also simply run past everything and never get hit to see what's ahead, or even clear levels lol
Aiden Lewis
Compare it to Shovel Knight or Cuphead
Jeremiah Mitchell
I dunno, this guy raised some good points. Explain yourself mate.
Sebastian Wilson
lmao is that the actual story for celeste?
Ryan Nguyen
That's where the controversy comes from; journos making articles about making hard games more accessible under a banner of inclusivity when really it'd mostly just be used by journalists so they can spend less time to make a review on games like sekiro. That and dev costs/dev time (i.e. fromsoft can't just magic an easy mode out of their hat. not a good one at least)
Jason Williams
yes. They're climbing a "mountain" with their boyfriend who disappears part way through, to complete the "ultimate challenge" and "overcome the incredible hurdles" involving killing a baby.
Jose Murphy
>Jumper was made by Celeste's creator I know, I was taking the piss, mate.
Thomas Bennett
You play an insanely boring looking character (he feels like a place holder) and go through very drab environments - there's a lot of browns in the game, so a lot of it blurs together
It's a fucking game We've barely even reached a point as a species where everyone has access to what they need to survive and people are out here complaining a game needs to be more accessible to them so they can "experience" it Fucking self centered zoomer shits is all it comes down to good times create weak men and all that
Carter Cruz
No, it's a just a really dumb and trite story about overcoming depression.
Andrew Flores
>Celeste was shilled because of its game journo mode
Holy shit. Now it all makes sense.
Xavier Wood
Dumb Liberal faggot
Jordan Perez
are their any good vidya stories about overcoming depression? Legitimately curious if any game can handle that theme and not be annoying about it.
Lincoln Morris
My indie game will have a ‘game journo mode’ where the game plays itself and your character becomes a cuck.
Hopefully the backlash I get from the journos will get people to actually buy and play it.
Owen Flores
Shut up faggot. Nobody cares about your bragging.
Alexander Ramirez
Don't. I'm a literal tard wrangler (lack of better phrasing) and the #1 thing they hate is being treated like babies. Unless, you know, they're so profoundly retarded that they have baby brain. Then they love it.
Anyways, I've seen straight up disabled people play "hard" games just fine. They adapt, whether it be physical disability or mental. I have never met someone who is physically incapable of beating a game that would be otherwise able to play vidya in general. It's a meme pushed, again, by furries and Well Meaning White Women + basedboys. Nobody else.
Ian Parker
>everything needs garish cartoony colours The colour scheme of Dustforce is meant to be nice and relaxing not like some diarrhea. As for the character you're missing the point, it's like saying that Ryu Hayabusa is boring, the point is that they're professionals who convey personality through movement animations which are actually very good in Dustforce
Carson Morales
How can this game generate so much butthurt?
Not even DaS3 with Midir and Friede did something like this and it was just 3 years ago. Is this just because there isn't leveling anymore?
Evan King
you joking or do you have an indie game in development?
>A high performance platformer should be "relaxing"
Nah it's what I'd call "boring"
>More, drab, brown environments proving my point
Thanks
Landon Fisher
Theres nothing wrong with having a (relatively) high skillfloor These people need to get it through their thick skulls not everything has to be inclusive to them Some things arent meant for everyone and thats ok
Dylan Rivera
you can't cheat with summons. That's unironically it. You would be appalled if you saw the numbers for what % of people in the souls games use a summon to beat content. It's available to the server masters, and you won't believe me if I say I have it for des, but I'll just say it's above 85%, for bosses beaten with summons.
Bentley Ross
I really can't support either side because I don't give a fuck how other people play games. I'm biased towards "don't include" because I can enjoy most games if not at max difficulty then at least on Normal, i.e. the bare minimum intended experience. And if I had to play on easymodo I'd just feel like shit for it throughout. But that's me. But I only care about myself. They should add character creation mode instead, so I would actually consider playing it.
Elijah Long
you know how blacks, mexicans, and asians get annoyed when white liberals use them as an excuse to be offended? Its the same with disabled people and these garbage journalists. They just want to use disabled people as a shield as an excuse for their lack of skill, its disgusting. Obviously not all disabled can play vidya but notice how we haven't heard any knews of disabled guys complaining about sekiro or vidya in general, its because they simply dont play vidya or they got good enough to play. Developers already do enough for disabled by offering control rebinding and just making simple casual games in general anyway.
Cameron Long
Can someone explain why Sekiro's difficulty is such a big deal but I don't recall seeing this much talk about it for other FROM titles?
Jackson Harris
There's nothing wrong with accessibility options, especially with basic features like button remapping that would've been commonplace if shitty publishers didn't outsource code to poos. The problem is shitter shattered journos desperately trying to hide their ineptitude by pretending that they're speaking on behalf of cripples when they beg for easy modes.
Jeremiah Jenkins
I’m working on a River City Ransom type game where you protect your girlfriend from thugs who were once your best friends while trying to salvage your broken life. I want it to have multiple endings, mostly involving what you do after you graduate. I’m thinking the game journo mode, when selected, will have the main character automatically go through the cuck route, where you lose your girlfriend to your normie classmate.
Jonathan Russell
Yeah, why not? It's contrasting difficult perfectionist gameplay with a nice soothing colour scheme and relaxing electronic music to make the countless repeated attempts enjoyable. If it had "hardcore" presentation that fit its difficulty then you'd have a really obnoxious game. Don't be a brainlet
Juan Brooks
See
Juan Clark
journos keep pushing this subversive anti-merit shit
Nicholas Martin
Normalfags hopping on an exciting new IP. Dark Souls already had the expectation of being a hard game. Sekiro brought in a shit ton of new players, probably moreso than any other of their games to date.
I haven't played Sekiro yet but I managed to style in DMC5 on SoS with just two okay fingers on my left hand by using WASD (+1234 for Dante styles) and my right hand on my controller. I'm fairly confident I'd be able to git gud at Sekiro or at least cheese it. I have patience.
HOWEVER, from an economical standpoint, an "Assist Mode" would theoretically increase your potential playerbase. Look at MGSV's Chicken Hat. Or whatever that game was that added a watermark to your screen so you couldn't brag about beating it. I'm fairly certain that adding a save modifier that decreases damage taken, adds a watermark, a pink bandana so you look like a dunce, etc. should be worth the extra customers, even if they're well, the kind of people game journos are.
Carter Thomas
Umihara Kawase, the best 2D platformer, does the exact same thing as Dustforce, very simple minimalist 2D graphics, soothing colour scheme, upbeat relaxing music, really high difficulty. Plenty of NES games were "minimalistic" by their very nature too since the system could only do so much, look at Gimmick. That's not an argument either, none of these games had the gameplay of Dustforce, the whole subgenre of precision platformers did not exist back then.
Carter Gutierrez
Why do these retards even play video games? Go read a fucking book or something They sure as fuck wont find a story in a souls game
Carter Campbell
Umihara Kawase, another game with soul
>Plenty of NES games were "minimalistic" by their very nature too since the system could only do so much
Different hardware, different standards - what makes an NES game look great and what makes a SNES game look great are different
>Different hardware, different standards Ah so hardware matters, but things like gameplay style don't? Colour scheme isn't everything also, the animations there are godawful, and level of detail in environments is quite a bit lower than Dustforce.
Robert Clark
'Member when scrubadubs could use cheat codes instead of gitting gud, and nobody had to threaten to gas Japan over it?
Jack Murphy
The great irony is that Celeste doesn't have any difficulty options.
Chase Rodriguez
They're bullying people simply for disagreeing and making them kowtow
Imagine if all these 'woke leftists' dedicated all this energy they put into being psychotic scumbags to organizing to help homeless people
Then they bitch and moan when the game mocks them for being shitters. Journos have dashed their credibility to bits time and time again, and establishing a core consumer base with a polished rewarding product is arguably more important than wasting resources on retard friendly modes.
Juan Gray
>he hasn't seen the quadriplegic play sekiro
Easton Young
seriously why the fuck is this 'revolutionary leftism' now
do these people think that if Karl Marx was brought back to life he'd think making games easier is worth spending energy on
Games mocking you for cheating or being shitters is part of game history, but I see what you're getting at. I mean, trainers, cheat engines and similar programs will always exist for legit shitters.
Angel Carter
An actual quadriplegic cripple finished the game, why does it need an easy mode?
David Perry
There should be only one response to this kind of shit "git gud"
Leo Murphy
Literally all they have to do is say no. That's all anyone has to say. They have to keep saying no until the screeching finally stops.
Jackson Robinson
I have no clue how the guy that made Jumper and An Untitled Story can hold this opinion.
Nathaniel Nelson
They should just go full S.T.A.L.K.E.R. on them and have an easy mode that makes the game harder
Carter Brooks
I'm worried since Japanese people are culturally primed to be nice and respectful to foreigners. And they've created a culture where the only way of being nice and respectful is doing EXACTLY what they say.
Jacob Young
From doesn't give a shit, they can't even be assed to add proper region locks to their games
Nathan Smith
Nigga people have been complaining about soulsbourne easy modes for nearly a decade now.
Benjamin Jackson
Considering Marx quite literally told the leftist movements in America to stop getting involved with feminist bullshit and focus on the worker class instead, he'd probably be considered an alt right nazi today.
Liam Price
This, but it has tumblr art and a pretentious story about "depression" so soilets call it GOTY.
Gabriel Hughes
From is a company. They'll start paying attention once their games stop selling millions.
And considering From used to make niche games no one gave a fuck about until DeS and DaS hit mainstream, they're probably going to be fine even if your average capeshit lover, game of thrones fan normalfag doesn't buy their games anymore.
Tyler Barnes
It kills me when these people talk about dying to a segment many times and having to try again, calling it a waste of time. That's the fucking game dude. You obviously don't like it, so play something else.
Caleb Watson
based
Joseph Martinez
What's with the shilling? I saw exact thread multiple times
Ian Sullivan
Yeah but they didn't make it about being bigoted to disabled people. They're forcing the "if you don't add an easy mode you hate cripples" shit HARD.
Nathaniel Campbell
It's made by the same guy who spams Epic vs Steam threads, compare the writing style. He just branches out into other topics now and then.
Isaac Miller
>implying he won't kowtow
Eli Williams
Not really, Yea Forums just hates it arbitrarily.
Jacob Martinez
I think that the existence of the assist mode completely broke with the narrative of Celeste. Isn't Celeste using climbing a mountain as an allegory for overcoming mental illness? Why would there be an easy path up that mountain, it doesn't gel with the story that the game is telling at all. Celeste is the last game that needed an easy mode.
games journalists literally do not have the time to git gud, they're expected to be done with a game in a few hours.
Jason Campbell
Just go download a trainer, pretty much the same thing and you don't have to bother the devs for it if you hate playing they way they designed the game to be played.
James Jenkins
It's an okay Game, but its fucking obvious that the creator has Game journos on dial up. Somebody should do some digging, because there is clearly collusion around it's ""'"Hype"""" and """"praise""".
Hudson Perry
People like a difficult game because of the shared sense of a struggle that has been overcome, that is basically the best way to bond with other people and form communities - that is why people in the military or athletics are extremely close to one another and have a brotherly bond that is basically impossible to create in any other way.
Creating an easy mode subverts that completely, it would no doubt erode the community and make the franchise worth less if any jackoff could just cruise through the game while not paying attention and not having to learn any of the mechanics of either the combat or the bosses.
Jeremiah Robinson
You DID Play N++, did you?
Bentley Young
sekiro has an easy mode. its called stealth. you can wipe out most enemies and half the health of minibosses using it. fucking hell these people havent even played sekiro
