They made shit that nearly killed the videogame industry and it took Nintendo to pull videogames out of the edgy hole Sega's shitty marketing team put it in to. Gaming was lined up to be banned outright because of how Sega didn't have any quality control against violence in videogames they just let anything on it. It was fucking stupid and irresponsible but anything to own Nintendo right? That's the mentality of the douchebags that live on /vr/ and still worship SEGA, the place you need to go back to.

SEGA didn't make anything. They just corrupted what was already there and rightfully got slayed for it.

Nintendo killed SEGA as a competitor once the SNES came out, that's too bad for you.

Because most of their greatest achievements were on the arcades which zoomers don't care about. How many other hugely influential arcade games are regularly talked about? Even Xevious is ignored now

They do. They have a pretty well-regarded library.

you better thank me you little shit. if it wasnt for that /thread post you wouldn't have been so popular sega

Kek no one is talking about home hardware, the arcade hardware pushed up to 2 million polygons a second at 60fps with texture filtering and in high resolution. Either way Daytona USA on the Saturn is still the second best playing version.

This is incorrect. Nintendo went from 85% global market share with the NES down to an almost technical tie with SEGA. The Mega Drive/Genesis did not win 4th gen but it was a success story.

It was Sony that killed SEGA, not Nintendo.

The genesis outsold the SNES in all western countries.

because Sega isn't a manufacturer anymore, so the media doesn't care about licking their boots for page views from console warriors

>On Nintendon'ts and their lies

Attached: E7wAzMtl.png.jpg (640x578, 57K)

holy shit. you are literally, unironically defending nintendo's censorship. you do know nintendo is a corporation, not your friend, right?

This is wrong as well. Sega killed themselves

realistically, it was sega of japan that killed sega.

This is the real /thread. As far as vidya history goes if it doesn’t involve Nintendo zoomers don’t care.

Well sure, that was part of it but it was Sony that ate up their market share, not Nintendo.

Yu Suzuki is more important and innovative than Shigeru Miyamoto.

*in the home market.

Why do people act like Sega ceased to exist after the death of the Dreamcast? They make arcade games to this day.

sega of japan did a good enough job of torching their own market share with the sega cd, 32x and saturn. when you piss off consumers AND retailers in your most successful market, you're screwed.

because chris chan is autistic haha

>single handedly pioneered 2D sprite scaling (SubRoc 3D)

released the Mega Drive without hardware scaling capabilities
>single handedly legitimized 3D’s potential to offer fast, smooth performance (Virtua Racing)
>single handedly introduced texture filtering to video games (Daytona USA)
planned the Saturn without advanced 3D support until the reveal of PSX's specs

Sega killed themselves by doing crazy shit that nobody wanted (sega-cd, 32X), awful hardware (Saturn, GameGear, Nomad) and software that wasn't appealing to audiences (very arcade like games with a short playthrough, when consoles were killing the arcade and their gameplay style fast).

And unlike Nintendo they didn't got the handheld market domination to survive so many failures.

If they just stuck with the genesis, and the saturn was a bit better, they would maybe still be around fighting MS for the last place.

Sega didn't do anything to keep their legacy alive. They always moved forward and never maintained the past, so it is hard to appreciate what all rhey achieved as much of it was not preserved beyond the maintenance of the expensive arcade units you are lucky to find. Home market was basically wasted potential by comparison. That Sonic is their legacy is both a shame and a testament to how badly they maintained relevancy in the post-arcade age.

You do realize the SNES saw a decline after the NES worldwide which became a trend for Nintendo consoles from then on, right?

>surprised a piece of home hardware developed in 1987-88 didn’t natively support sprite scaling
Well good thing it’s 3x faster than SNES CPU could compensate for this; see Contra, Batman and Robin, Gunstar Heroes, Castlevania Bloodlines, and a ton of games I’m not remembering at the moment
>planned the Saturn without advanced 3D support until the reveal of PSX's specs
Why do people always say this? You don’t include a chip capable of rendering up to 800,000 polyons a second (VDP1) from the getgo if you have no intention of running 3D games.

MGS2 did it far better

You're welcome.

>How many other hugely influential arcade games are regularly talked about?
Street Fighter, maybe. That's about it.

I’ve been reading on the Genesis and it’s a pretty awesome piece of hardware. It’s a really impressive design. The Neo Geo was basically a sped up version of it. Sega definitely deserves more love.

I remember going to arcades and would seek out whatever new Sega shit was out. All their Model 1-3 games were fucking great. I still think VOOT is one of be best games ever.

>gamegear hardware is terrible
Lolwut. It could display 4096 unique colors and actually had a backlit screen.

when people say "sega died" they are referring to the home console portion of the company. everyone knows they are still around today

>nomad
>awful hardware
are you retarded? it was a fucking portable home console. at least use an actual shitty example like the genesis model 3 or mega jet

Attached: 1546487064337.png (352x398, 12K)

Because they havent brought back their great 3D beat'em ups from the Sega CD days.

Yeah but it was also an intense battery hog. A cool piece of hardware nonetheless. Both GG Shinobi games are excellent.

Ironic that they still make arcade games, considering arcades themselves have been a dying market for 20 years.

bitchy harpies aside, man that’s a fucking great game. Funny to think this amazing game was released by SEGA the same year as dumpsterfire sonic 06. SEGA is the most bipolar company ever. Loads of gems and loads of shit and no in between.

I own both an original game boy and an original gamegear and the battery life on both is pretty comparable.

>The Neo Geo was basically a sped up version of it

despite using similar microprocessors Neo Geo and Genesis' architectures are nothing like each other

I think people definitely wanted the Sega CD, but other than that yea. The 32X was nonsense. The Game Gear was neat (basically a portable Master System) but not practical.

Because the arcade market ceased to be relevant post-dreamcast era. I've seen the output since then, it's got some bright spots but it is nothing compared to what it was in the 70s-90s. Sega was the force pushing new tech in games entertainment, but they got outpaced and the game changed, and they couldn't keep up. The stuff now is just a shadow of its former glory.

>planned the Saturn without advanced 3D support
Are you spreading the "2d powerhouse" meme here? Because VDP1 (GPU1), is a chip based on model1 arcade hardware (which was designed for 3d polygons)

>SEGA is the most bipolar company ever. Loads of gems and loads of shit and no in between.
Really the only consistently incompetent division of Sega is Sonic Team, every other division continues to publish excellent pieces of software. Of course, normies don’t know or care about any Sega IPs besides sonic so this is probably where their current day reputation comes from.

Genesis had 52% of the market in the US, that’s more than half in case you can’t math. MegaDrive was on top in UK & South America too. Nintendo only had the Japanese market but then got BTFO by Saturn.

Sonic team was their best studio up until around 2010

In my experience the GG sucks batteries about twice as fast, if not more.

The fact that Sega was the pond and the fish is what let them do the things they did on Genesis and Dreamcast. I always think of that when people say Nintendo should go third party. MK8 sold like 8 million units on the Wii U. Put that on the PS4 and it’s just another game competing with God of War and FIFA. You can’t do the same things.

>up until around 2010
What went wrong then? It's not like their record in the 2000s was great.

They only made bad 2D soulless sonic games after 2010

Fucking Millennials are the last goddamn generation to get to bitch about anyone else being obsessed with Nintendo.

Where did you come to the conclusion that I’m a millennial? Are you projecting?

I think Sonic Team was fine in their aughts, not the best not the worst you can hope for, but you pick them as the best and not anyone else? AM2? Amusement Vision?

Attached: Sega.png (657x82, 9K)

I FUCKING MISS VIRTUA FIGHTER

What, is it dead? Virtua Fighter is one of those games I appreciate visually and technically but don’t really find appealing to play.

They lost alot of their talented people after Unleashed and Generations and the talent that is left works on the Mario and Sonic Olympic games

And what did they make that was so great before 2010?, last time sonic team was legit a top developer was in the genesis era.

The real Sega best team is AM2.

The last numbered VF was in 2006 and the last revision for that game was in 2012.

What did they even make? Sonic team gave me sonic adventure, heroes, and unleashed. They worked with dimps and gave me advance and rush. I even liked a lot of 06. Their real credit though is phantasy star. I played phantasy star online and universe for thousands of hours and still do. No other game has given me that treat and thats why sonic team is my favorite

Colors and Generations are by no means perfect but they're better than fucking Heroes, Shadow, or '06. Lost World and especially Forces are crap, though.

I prefer Generations and Colors to Unleashed, too. By far.

>last time sonic team was legit a top developer was in the genesis era.
What is Adventure 1 and 2? I know there is a big circle jerk to hate on them now but on release they got amazing scores.
Also Sonic Team wasn't a thing during the genesis era

>don't find appealing to play
>ohshitniggerwhatareyoudoing.jpg
God it's so much better than other 3D fighters. There's esoteric shit in there, but it's really a fighting game you can play as pure as you want which is a rarity these days (thanks UNIST).

>Why doesn’t SEGA get the recognition it deserves for the role it played in shaping the video game industry?
Because it's the underdog of gaming, with the worse Jap management of all gaming. MOst of the credit is thanks to American's marketing, but Jap's were triggered how SoA handled everything they created (namely Sonic) so with the civil war up to the death of the Dreamcast, all good will of the company vanished with their last console.

In other words; this

>Sonic team
you must be kidding me from 2001 to 2010 they only produced trash, save from Puyo Puyo (formula already estabilished by Compile) and Feel the Magic: XY/XX

SA1 and 2 are good but not amazing, also SA2 is far better than SA1 and fuck anybody who thinks otherwise.

Meanwhile based AM2 made F-Zero GX.

That sounds like an awful lot of justified COPE.

AM2 is Sega's legacy arcade division. While console games are more known, Sega's arcade legacy has probably more profoundly affected gaming as a whole (many Japanese directors cite Sega's arcade games as the standard they looked up to, such as 3D fighters wanting to emulate Virtua Fighter). AM2 is responsible for pretty much 90% of Sega's arcade hits.

>I have no argument
At least say it.

Name a better videro gamu developer protip you can't

Attached: 1538029944990.jpg (600x450, 34K)

sasuga F-Zero-For-Brains user
Amusement Vision made F-Zero AX and F-Zero GX

I dont and nobody cares about that. Its why sonic and phantasy star are still going on strong even if they suck now and why virtua fighter and other arcade games are dead as fuck

No 2000-2010 was peak sonic team. They suck now but they had a good run

It's both. Sega of America wanted to partner with Sony, but mue Nippon pride of SoJ fucked that shit up, making Sony go competetor and fucked Nintendo and SEGA up, but since Nintendo still knew what they were doing, they could recover unlike SEGA who died in a fire thanks to company civil war. SoJ killed SEGA. If SoA had full control over everything, Nintendo either had to be a far better company than what they are today, or actually end up going 3rd party themselves. Sony's power and SEGA's technolgy could have monopolized gaming as we know it. Hell I don't even think Microsoft would have became a gaming market if this scerio happened.

>SA1 and 2 are good but not amazing, also SA2 is far better than SA1 and fuck anybody who thinks otherwise.
I don't care what you think about them I was just saying they were still viewed as amazing developers during that era. Both Sa1 and 2 got around 90s overall

What do japs always come across as kinda clueless? Is it the radically different language?

I love SEGA but hate sonic, that stupid little blue shit stain is a laughingstock and it’s all people associate with SEGA. Sonic should have died with 3&K.

Attached: 8996AA34-6D0B-426E-A294-74EF3850BC25.jpg (765x1024, 276K)

It's your brain damage, and social awkwardness, probably. It's also why you eat paint chips.

>Both Sa1 and 2 got around 90s overall
Colors and Generations were well-received, too, to be fair. Unless you actually meant Sonic Team started sucking after 2011 and not after 2010 (Colors came out at the end of 2010 and Generations in 2011).

>that stupid little blue shit stain is a laughingstock and it’s all people associate with SEGA
user you realize its Sega's fault right? If they were a better company they wouldn't have let their mascot go to shit.

Only burger millenials

Sonic Team became a laughing stock around 2005 with Shadow the Hedgehog with 06 cementing that. They had a small redemption arc with Colors and Generations but other than that they are still seen in a bad light especially with Forces coming out recently.

Sonic sells like shit, in fact the best selling Sonic games are the one not made by Sega and the ones that has Mario on the name.

Maybe it would be better for Sonic to retire while he still can.

And Phantasy Star is going so strong, the last game is mobile shit.

>Sonic sells like shit,
Come on now Sonic has been garbage for awhile but most of his games(not counting the ones on Wii U because the Wii U sold like shit) sell above 1 mil. Generations sold like 3 mil.

Sega still has the far better catalog of games than their competitors. Sure, a lot of Sega games can be misses too, but at least they do a lot more innovative things than either Nintendo or Sony. And they can still turn out total gems from time to time.

Sega is a mildly underrated publisher too. They really do a lot of good for gaming as a whole.

SoJ rushed them out year after year after year. Also most of the staff was shuffed into the ass backwards spots in positions, like Iizuka, level designer of 3K, apointed director of Sonic since SA1 to Shadow the Hedgehog, while programer and game design idea guy of Sonic's core style of play; Yuji Naka, forced into producer seat instead of programing the 3D games. People even call NiGHTS a "3D Sonic game" because of how the physics work between the two. SEGA basically fucked over their mascot because money money money was all they could think about when competing with Mario.

Remember that Mario was the rival to Sonic, his games are doing 10M, 3M is nothing.

Also generations was 8 years ago.

>and shoutouts to Yuji Naka for not knowing Hedgehogs could swim

The 32X wasn't a terrible idea, but it came a year later than it should have, and Sega of Japan pulled the rug out from under it by releasing the Saturn a year early.

>Remember that Mario was the rival to Sonic, his games are doing 10M,
Again stop spreading false info, the only reason Sonic 1 and 2 sold so well was because it was bundled with the Genesis for years. Sonic 3&K only sold 4 mil and thats if you add the two games together.

That's not even close to true. The GG chews through batteries because of that back-lit screen and more powerful hardware.

I mean does that really hurt the character? Blaze the Cat is afraid of heights, despite being a cat. It's a quirk that makes the character have, well, character, instead of falling into a technical stereotype.

>tried to sell the 32x, sega cd, and saturn at the same time

I said Mario games are doing 10M, not Sonic.

Thanks Yu

does anyone in this thread actually own knuckles chaotix?

I do

Not all cats like heights.

Old genesis looked like a tower, it was a bad idea.

Maybe a genesis v3 with more power and everything internal would have been better, still it didn't need to exist really.

the 32x was always a terrible idea. it was soj's stupid kneejerk reaction to the atari jaguar of all things. nothing about it made any sense at all.

So Sonic is the one hedgehog that can't swim. Nothing wrong with that, no one's perfect.

Ok why are you saying 3 mil is nothing then? Sonic was never really a true rival to Mario and doing 3 Mil sales is great for any franchise especially one that has been going for 20+ years

I have never even seen a 32X in real life, much less own a game for it.

In fact the genesis was also extremely rare, some user said it was popular in south america, but I guess it wasn't except for brazil, it was all about the snes here.

They have so many ips that they do fuck all with, like where is a new:

monkey ball
jet set/grind radio
power stone
a non mmo/mobile mainline Phantasy Star
shining force
langrisser
shinobi
nightshade
outrun
after burner (c’mon give ace combat some competition)

like what the hell sega?

Sega of America designed the 32X. They were given the go-ahead by SOJ to make it, and wasn't informed that the saturn was being released a year early, pretty much defeating the entire purpose of the 32X

>In fact the genesis was also extremely rare, some user said it was popular in south america, but I guess it wasn't except for brazil
Pretty sure that's the master system you're thinking of, though since the genesis is backwards compatible it's close enough

Don't forget Streets of Rage and Golden Axe

Why bother? You come here or on gematsu and pretend youre a fan of all these, let alone even played some of them. One sonic release would outsell all these combined

Sega always took their chances and made risky choices. Always trying to innovate and pushing the edge if possible.
Sometimes said decisions went extremely well, and other times they completely fucked up everything.

Sega of America and Japan rocky relationship has a lot to do with the company downfall imo.

Also, on a completely unrelated note, most people that like Sega are complete bros and know their shit about vidya

>shining force
I thought that one still get games.

But nearly 3/4th of that list people don't actually play. Jet Set tried to get revived by the studio making them, twice, and no one fucking cared enough to make it happen. Just like what happened to Mega Man Legends 3. People only care about the most relevant shit, if it's even 3-5 years old without something new people call it dead now. I blame the casual market.

The Mega Drive became popular in Brazil as well, just later than in North America.

they're too busy raking in gacha cash from suicidal japanese incels

soj forced them to make it because they were scared of the jaguar and felt the need to rush a "next-gen" product out to the market.

Sega has hemorrhaged a lot of developers and modern games already require a lot, that's part of why you don't see these IPs anymore outside of mobile appearances. Publishing games is one thing, but managing in-house development is another.

>after burner (c’mon give ace combat some competition)
After Burner isn't even in the same realm as other flight games, even arcade-like ones like AC. It's basically Space Harrier with a plane skin (and made to be even more action-y, but that's basically every spin on the 3D shooter formula by Sega)

Either way, it was SOJs poor decisions to fuck up the 32X.

They should have just made a "lock on" cartridge similar to sonic and knuckles with the SVP chip in it that would add some extra oomph to games.

>Imagine being scared of Atari
The state of Sega of Japan @ 94.

If you guys want more legacy Sega IPs, better start supporting that shit. Buy Sega AGES games. On Switch, Out Run and Sonic 1 are on sale right now. Thank me later.

I played and have each and every game I named.

I want space channel 5 part 2 to play on my xbox one. Why wont sega allow this?

>but I guess it wasn't except for brazil

Where are you from user?
The Genesis was extremely popular here in Argentina , but I never met a single kid with a SNES.
In fact, to this day I can go to most local gameshops and get Genesis carts.
The Famicom clones were extremely popular too, I'll give you that.

Sonic Forces sold so poor I wouldn't bet on it.

I mean they did try carts with the SVP inside them. And the ended up costing $100 and not selling extremely well.

Not to mention a big reason they wanted to put out the 32X was because the genesis 64/512 color palette was weak against the SNES 256/32768 color palette, but the 32X could match the SNES. And for that they needed a separate unit with it's own video out

To be fair Yu is a boomer, he probably doesnt understand anything he sees in the modern games industry

Did they ever release sales data? Only thing I saw was an article saying Sega was "pleased" with the sales.

*sips* aaaaaaahhhhhhh the Hitachi SH-2 now that was a good CPU.

They did that with the Saturn and Mega Drive too user.

Truxton

The Dreamcast was the first console to have DLC too. Dunno if that can be considered a good thing though.

Sega knows the exact amount of not taking themselves seriously and having fun with their games, and it shows.

You can play whatever's been natively ported and on the eshop or try your luck with roms in a homebrew emulator (though unless you're running some version of genesis plus gx compatibility is iffy)
