Their influence is 70s Yakuza movies and local soap opera, not so much comics and cartoons. The stylization is different, as is filming technique. Also, as of late they model out of real people, actors and actresses, looking pretty spotty.

To be fair, Yukio Mishima was a gay body-building samurai who wrote poetry. He was also the leader of a right-wing extremist coup in Japan in the 70s who's aim was to restore the Emperor to power. You can't make shit that crazy up.

Well, people in Yakuza movies and soap operas tend to look nice and well groomed even if they play sickos and hard boiled men. Have nice lightning and so on. Majima was kinda ugly back in the PS2 times though, when the series wasn't that aware of the fujo following.
