What genre of game are you truly good at, Yea Forums? If you had to compete in a tournament with your life at stake, which genre would you try to compete in? For single player you'd be judged on score/time/death count depending on the game.

i've never played a real shmup game before, where should I start? Ikaruga looks cool

perfect cherry blossom or imperishable night

Arcade racing or karts

I've won some fighting games at local tournaments but a pro would still bop me

where is rhythm games?

youtube.com/watch?v=4Umk99g-H94

Ikaruga is probably the worst one to start with, since it's an outlier that plays more like a puzzle game than a shmup. Try one without that many gimmicks. A lot of the early touhou's are a good place to start.

I can't argue with fightan and RTS. SHMUPs are definitely tough, but they lack the pure mastery of controls that fighting games and RTS require.

>If you had to compete in a tournament with your life at stake, which genre would you try to compete in

I'd lose in all three, but if I had to, let me die by playing ultra street fighter 4

>If you had to compete in a tournament with your life at stake, which genre would you try to compete in
i got into fighting games late 2018 and have been mainly playing melty and bbcf, so probably that. but i'm no where near good. i still get bopped at my locals. i've played a lot of touhou but i'm shit. got into it for the girls only. i

This desu. -RTS +Rhythm Games.

Depends on the style.
- R-Type and Gradius are good, but they're a very different beast than what's popular in the SHMUP space now.
- DoDonPachi is the quintessential Bullet Hell game. Not the first, but definitely the most well regarded. You can get Dodonpachi Ressurection on Steam
- Psikyo games like the Gunbird series, Strikers 19XX, and Tengai are quite nice, though a bit different than Cave's (Dodonpachi, Guwange, ESP Ra.De). Their games generally have bigger hitboxes and faster bullets than is normal for "popular" SHMUPs.
-Raizing games are rock solid manic SHMUPs for crazy people. Some SHMUP fans swear by Battle Garrega, but their other games (Batrider, Great Mahou Daisakusen) are worth checking out as well.
- Play RayForce. And RayStorm. RayCrisis is optional, but good.

so pretty much anything in a japan arcade? also is this memorization? or pure reflexes.

Trinity is wrong

Single player shmup doesnt hold a candle to multiplayer fps

>you can program an AI to play and master a shmup
>you cant program an AI to master a fighting game, RTS, or arena FPS

PvE games will always have a skill ceiling, unlike PvP games.

multiplayer games require 0 skill just rely on team and you win

>Single player shmup doesnt hold a candle to multiplayer fps
You mean the one multiplayer FPS that shooter fans hail as perfect and refuse to try anything else?

its pretty easy to make an ai to master fighting game, just read the input buffer and react accordingly. humans can't see that buffer.

RTS involves strategy as well as physical ability. What's more it involves strategy against another human which is infinitely more skill intensive since you need to adapt and evolve compared to hitting buttons in sequence in response to a pattern. If anything shmup needs to be changed to another competitive genre.

agreed

with enough nuscle memory build up you can beat those games blindfolded

can't say the sake about pve

DoDonPachi > Excrement > Touhou

that could be CS or Quake

Add Puzzle to that group.

what a low iq response

>parrots "ikaruga is le gimmick" meme
>recommends touhou
Classic zoomers

While not as skillful as Shmups or Fightan', I can call myself decent at most 2D platformers, even the tougher ones.

With such a broad definition any multiplayer game then is better and you simply don't have a trinity anymore. Might as well add literally anything where people can fight against each others. Fifa should maybe be in there then, great thread!

All rhythm games are pure reflexes unless the chart has stop gimmicks or stealth mode to show off.

I like Ikaruga and I think it's great, I just don't think it's a great introduction to shmups. What's your problem?

I like two of those, but am good at neither. So I just have to make due with enjoying them for personal reasons rather than competition.

Platformers are good stuff.

Who are we competing against? Just a random assortment of "gamers"? If so I would pick Wings of Vi because it's obscure and difficult enough where my ability to beat it will be enough for me to win.

Not that user:
Touhou has as much stigma as Ikaruga, unfortunately. With Ikaruga it's due to non-SHMUP fans hyping it and the game being very different from the norm. With Touhou, it's because of its fanbase.

I won't fault you for liking it though: I used to love it back in the day but fell off the wagon years later. Still dig me SHMUPs though, enough to even give mobile stuff like Danmaku Unlimited 3 and Bullet Hell Monday a shot.

Every gamer in the world is placed in the tournament. Bottom 70% of people in the tourney are killed. Remember since anyone can choose the game they want to compete in anyone else who chooses Wings of Vi will probably be good at it. If only 10 people choose it, you need to place in the top 3. Can you do it user?

>you cant program an AI to master a fighting game, RTS, or arena FPS
But you obviously can, think aim hax or a fighting game AI that reads inputs and reacts faster than the animations play.

Well, assuming you don't use an AI that "cheats" I think it's much easier to build one that can dodge bullets in a shmup. It might still get trapped in some patterns though.

RTS is too convoluted when you start taking it "seriously". It was fun in its prime but looking back that shit had issues.

Touhou EoSD is the best starting point, boy.

I like RTS games but it's literally a game of who can get to the bigger units first + some luck on your starting position

Where's battle royale position in this list?

>literally a game of who can get to the bigger units first
>rushes you with the smallest units in the game
keke, nothing personnel kid

I've played a shitload but never stick to one long enough to get very far into the game on 1 credit.

What shmups are peak aesthetics while at the same time being easy to 1CC? Post image as evidence.

That's just fucking stupid.

>starting off with the best of the best
that's just gonna make the rest not as fun to playthrough

Nanostray on DS or Sine Mora EX on current gen and PC.

shmups lack the human vs. human interaction that fighting and rts have. really shmups are just memorization exercises and thats it. I would replace it with old arena shooters (UT/Q3)

anyone want to play both a fighter and a shmup?
