Heavy is the “support them and they’ll carry you” class. You don’t even need to be a medic you just have to help them against their counters and they’ll facetank the enemy team.
As a pyro, I tend to stay near the heavy/medic combo Incase they need a quick extinguish, a spy check, or need help with projectile deflection.
As for snipers, I have no solution. But then again, it’s your fault for being in the open like that

I think he's in a perfectly fine spot, he just needs more alternative playstyles other than fatscout to make him more fun to play. Heavy is just boring which is why he has such a low playrate despite being a powerhouse.

This is the answer. Heavy is vulnerable to many classes despite his large health pool and needs something that encourages him to stay close to teammates as quasi-defense/support. He'll never be viable on his own against even remotely competent players. Let him chip away at enemies and punish those who overextend and then pop a banner to make a push or reinforce against the other team's push.

Heavy is extremely vulnerable to not only Sniper/Spy but he also dies quickly if he gets caught un-revved. He's generally okay when supported by a medic because the med gives him more time to get revved up, but then the medic is being put in danger by trying to save the heavy from the scout that's about to 8) him 3x before he can even get revved

Heavy is weak to everything. People only think he's strong because of the occasional pocket heavy that carry, but that's about it.
He needs a revamp at this point.
The problem with heavy is the way his primary weapon operates. You aren't going to fix him without completely changing how the minigun functions and that's a very complicated matter and not realistic to expect from a 12 year old game.

That said, Heavy doesn't have a very high skill ceiling, he isn't that fun to play, and doesn't really have any variety. There are only two ways to play Heavy, "get in position and Minigun people down" and "Punch people while steak boosted"

I hate this meme. Sniper does 150 damage on scope at any range. A good sniper can delete pretty much anybody whenever he feels like it provided his primary isn't going through its animation.

Sandvich/Banana is preferable in most cases, I will not disagree that it is fantastic to have. Use the food item in every situation when a fortified spot is something that you take for granted. For instance, when you're on defense and there's going to be nothing between you and walking to defend the control point or when you're playing offense on a payload map and the bomb cart is directly outside of your spawn.
But to be ignorant and say Heavy has completely nothing for the cases where he has to walk alone from Blu spawn to the control point is just plain stupid. If you had a shotgun out you can fend off a spy or flanking scout who is trying to pick you off un-revved.
Sniper is a glass canon.
As infuriating as it is to play against a good sniper, there are counter plays.
Snipers aren't gods and they're unreliable. That's why they're not run 100% of the time in 6's.
Having a bad day on Sniper has worse repercussions than a bad day on Soldier.

If that's the trade off that you want to make, that's fine. But I do want you to acknowledge that you have have nobody to blame but yourself when you greedily choose to use a food item in place of a shotgun when you gotta run forward to a good fortified spot where you can rev up your minigun.
Let me give you one more example. You're on Blu, first stage of Dustbowl, and the first control point is captured, you just need to capture this one control point in the pic I posted and you're off to stage 2. On top of all this, you're playing Heavy. Your team's Engineer has a base in that enclosed area behind the one-way door, so you don't even have to worry about getting that far on your own, you just use a teleporter to get there.
So now you just have to go through the one-way door, down the stairs, and the control point is right there. It's easier said than done, if you rev up and walk out through the one-way door you will be either sniped or get a barrage of rockets and grenade pipes thrown at you. I'm going to tell you frankly that if you aren't ubercharged, they are going to stop you from just walking revved to the control point.
But you know what? If you're smart, you can slowly work your way through with a shotgun, staying relatively mobile, and then as soon as you're standing on the control point that is a good fortified spot, where you no longer need to move, to switch to Minigun and when any enemies come around to contest the control point you can just mow them down as they are forced to enter your fortified position. You win!

Headshot resistance should be a given, it's absolute bullshit that the class with the slowest speed and zero movement abilities (outside of GRU) is more susceptible to OHKs than every other.
Backstab resistance I disagree with though. It's an either/or situation; Spy either gets the kill with one move, or he doesn't because every Heavy is gonna 180 and mow him down the moment the first strike fails anyway.
A good Heavy should be encouraged to develop highly sensitive situational awareness, and being prepped for Spy rape is a fast-track to gaining that

problem is people don't trust the caber. ditch the sticky launcher for jumper, equip hp boots, and go all or nothing with caber. jumper and boots help you not die on the initial hit and pretty much any sort of damage will kill the sniper after the initial hit. suicide after the kill so you can be midair back to the sniperspot when they exit their spawn

Heavy update (if it's even happening. I wouldn't be surprised if Valve just quietly cancelled all development and called it quits) is going to be a better update (still not worth the wait) simply because Heavy is a class whose role work. Maybe you don't like said role but he functions exactly as the devs and game intended, which is something Pyro and to a slightly lesser extent Spy will never have unless a TF3 happens.

You will notice the pop ups this month for TFC birthday. Basically we were lied to and used as guinea pigs for Steam. Then we got rewarded with a game made for 10 year olds. They had already dumbed down TFC due to the complaining of a small handful of players who most of us at the time never even heard of. Its not the game, its the entire premise of TF2. It represents a big fat FUKKKYU to those of us who commited alot of time to the game during its inception and even after that dreadful 1.4 patch.

It would give Heavy a viable alternative to the Sandvich. Instead of self-healing and keeping your medic healthy, you charge up damage for 10 seconds of either minicrits, resistances, or self-healing/speed. When you think about it, they're actually perfect for the Heavy. Just imagine a team rallying around a slow-moving Heavy, pushing an objective. Soldier can jump away, as is his job. Heavy fits the role of "team anchor" with the banners much better than Soldier does. If them being OP is your concern, then just realize that getting 600 damage built up without dying as heavy can actually be pretty tough if you don't have a sandvich.

Slow characters very rarely work in an FPS game, unless you buff them to the point of them being cancer. Soldier for instance would be trash without rocket jumping.
So the solution is to make Heavy faster.
- Remove minigun rev up
- Remove movement penalty while firing
- Reduce minigun damage to compensate for these changes.
Might need a health tweak too after that, the balance would need some time to work out, but that's how you fix Heavy.

As much at that is the case, TF2 was also the first time some classes really came into their own niche. For example the scatter gun was a really good addition to the scout class, allowing for his mobility to grab high damage burst shots instead of consistent sustained damage.

Dragon's Fury and the Thermal Thruster both had good ideas, allowing the pyro class to deal high bursts of damage in exchange for range and a way to reposition himself faster than most other of his unlocks (Detonator is fine for high places but it doesn't give you the gap closing for example). Don't get me wrong, TF had ALWAYS had good mod support due to the nature of the origins of the damn thing, but TF2 brought unprecedented mod support.
Whatever the case, I'm glad Brotherhood of arms never saw the light of day. Complain about TF2's artstyle and general gameplay, at least it wasn't a milsim that didn't look to take full advantage of the TF's classes.

Where Pyro lacks in upclose damage, Pyro excels at CONSISTENTLY dealing upclose damage because you really don't need to aim to light people on fire. You do have to aim with Scout, even at close range and I know you have missed meaty point-blank shots before and feel terrible about it.

I have 2000 hours as Soldier, and I very rarely use the banners. I always prefer the gunboats or the shotguns to the banners, and it's precisely for the reason that other classes do the job of "spamming choke points with knockback" better. Soldiers are for bombing, roaming, and aggressive, in your face tactics since that deals the most damage. Rockets have damage falloff, making them rather useless at long rage. Demo's pipes and stickies always do semi-consistent damage, especially the pipes, and he has more of them at his disposal than Soldier. That's why banners would be better suited for a "groundtank" class like Heavy.
Pyro is "babies first TF2 class" and his lack of needing to aim and new people tending to choke faster when under fire is why you see so many new people complain about him.
He's the beginner class. The class everyone loves first but then most people move on from.

Yep, and the location of the "aura" for the banners is more consistent with Heavy. He can't go anywhere quick, and he's a big, meaty anchor for you to identify and rally around. Soldier can rocket jump away in a split second, carry his aura with him.

completely agree with you m8. Valve seem to have zero idea how to balance the game, as evidenced by them balancing the game around 6s. Not shitting on 6s as a concept, but it has no place as the pillar around which the game is built since teams of 6 really dont work for the game, as it forces you to only bring what is absolutely necessary to the fight. You cant bring a sniper becuase that means that you lose out of that valuable slot for a roaming soldier/scout who have nearly the same pick potential but dramatically more surviability.

Conch is fantastic. Passive regen is a godsend for Soldier because you're going to be constantly taking damage if you want to rocketjump and you'll be constantly taking damage being in peoples' faces. The activated speed boost really has two benefits, 1.) for quickly getting back to combat after retreating for health and 2.) it really feels like an ultimate ability because people in pubs just can't handle a fast Soldier who sustains.

I used to play at a very high sens (probably 4in/360) when I used to aim with my wrist (so my arm was off the table), but when I got a larger desk and mousepad, I started lowering my sens and started iaming with my arm.
So it's possible to play with both, but make sure that it makes sense.
no random crits is a huge buff to spy since you dont die instantly every time a medic 1 shots you with melee. other than that i dont really have an opinion on it

How about having his minigun (and other variants) firing as soon as you left click, but it starts off slow and increases its fire rate up to normal as you spin up? I think the only real issue is how terrible Heavy is when he gets caught unawares, and this would help Heavy at least stand a chance when he's out of position.
And I know that Shotgun is meant to be for that, but barely anybody runs it and there's plenty of other classes that have unlockables that invalidate stock options so whatever

It's incredibly easy to miss with compared to the flamethrower, especially at close range, due in part to the variable fire rate that encourages you to lay on the trigger rather than waiting to fire when you actually have a shot lined up, which itself doesn't play nice with the fact that the weapon punishes you with reduced fire rate for missing.

Energy ball can't go through sentries and I don't like standing in front of/next to my sentry trying to hit his 4 rockets with my 3 energy balls praying a sniper or spy isn't alive so he doesn't destroy my sentry in the .6 seconds it takes to fire off 2 rockets.

If you use the loch-n-load you can actually damage the sentry faster than the engineer can swing his wrench 3 shotting it even when the engineer is turtling it.

heavy's a delicate situation because a tank with 300hp and a minigun can either be completely shit or pub-breakingly good, and you want neither of those
obviously, key things to note would be keeping his key counters (spies, snipers, ubers?) in mind when balancing him. that said, we need to work towards making all of his encounters with classes in general less dependent on whether or not he's revved up.
I'm proposing to make his minigun a more defensive playstyle by giving him mild damage resistance while he's revved up.
Giving him banners (or some heavy-themed item that functions like the banners) would also be good for making him a more team-focused class, seeing as his kit is not meant for a solo roamer in the first place. Giving him a lunchbox/utility slot for this would be optimal.
A slow AOE healing type of deal could be interesting, as it'd incentivize staying near the heavy and working as a team with him, further pushing the Team Player aspect. (Make it communism themed. Everyone gets some health!)
As an alternative, an offensive playstyle could work with Heavy getting an auto-shotgun and a riot shield respectively in the primary/proposed utility slots.

If it's gradual healing most of his lunchbox items, it'd be annoying to play against. Trading sustaining heals away for movement sounds okay. Maybe make the eating animation longer to compensate for burst healing.
