you get gems via the Mirage Board that you equip to them that allows them to use skills and I think augment their elemental attributes.

It's basically FF but with Pokemon elements but it's done well. Plus the actual story is not bad.

I would honestly recommend it over FFXV any day of the week

It's alright. Pretty well-polished and lots of content but ultimately it's a filler game to play when you have nothing better to do.

They’re roughly equal most of the time, but ifrit, shiva, and ramuh are somewhat worse than regular ones because they only get one enhanced fire/ice/thunder instead of two

The main reason to use any of them is that their special attacks are voiced

It's okay. You'll enjoy your time with it, but you probably won't spend much time thinking about it afterwards. I played the original on release, and I remember so little of it that it could have come out ten years ago despite being less than three years old.
