Why are today's Mario fans so obsessed with things like lore and continuity when that has never been an important element of the series?
Why are today's Mario fans so obsessed with things like lore and continuity when that has never been an important...
Because Movies.
No really: Games becoming more and more like cinema has attracted fans who want everything to have a story, even games that are traditionally light on it. This has been going on for a while: The Zelda Timeline was made because fans wanted to make connections when there really were none.
they aren't
Lore was always important
Why can't we have both? Is there something inherently wrong with wanting a little more nuance to your bingbing wahoo games? Don't you think the same old repetitive tripe of kidnapping Peach is getting old? As long as it doesn't interfere and there is a good balance. Hell it's funny that OP posts a picture of Rosalina, you know, the waifu OC Koizumi made and snuck an entire storybook into Galaxy.
There was always lore. SMB2 and Subcon. The Mario Land games establishing Wario and Daisy. Yoshi's Island, Luigi's Mansion... Hell even in games where Peach gets kidnapped some of them bring things to the table like Sunshine and Odyssey.
I couldn't care less about it, but mario galaxy had a super comfy story with Rosalina that no other game had, they don't really need it, it's just a plus galaxy had
They grew up with Mario but aren't grown up enough to accept what it has always been from the very start and move onto older, more mature series that are tailored to actually cater to their honed interests in lore and story. This is why a great majority of them like Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi, they would probably be more at home playing JRPGs, where story is a greater focus.
I think it has less to do with lore and continuity and is more about seeing characters they like again. Mario has had so many games with one-off characters that people grew attached to so it's hard to blame them for wanting some to return in future titles
It's not bad to have some story in games, the problem is the insistence that there MUST be. Some games do gain from having a solid story element, but others are much better without it, there's room for both and to different degrees, but you can't deny that many major games, especially American ones, prioritize story at the expense of gameplay, assuming it's not an online only, multiplayer only f2p game.
I blame matpat and that god awful "Peach is Rosalina's mom" abomination. Ever since then people have wanted a lore about a series that has nearly every game contain of the story of bowser kidnaps peach, go save. Maybe his kids are there to cause trouble, who cares
It makes it feel more like a living universe, which people enjoy. Lore/continuity means characters and worlds are more fleshed out and get more attention, which makes them more memorable - people are also just wired to feel good when they recognise references or familiar things, which is why you had people getting excited when they noticed Sheikah symbols in the BotW trailers, and started speculating on its implications for months.
Mario certainly doesn't need a narrative focus, but a little lore and continuity doesn't hurt. There was no reason for New Donk City to be the city from DK Arcade, or for Pauline herself to return in Odyssey, but fans enjoyed that these old elements in the series were brought back and utilized in a new way, which just served to enrich the universe, even if it was just a little. Kirby does this all the time, and while I'd argue that they sometimes lean on it a little too heavily, little menu screens that explain characters history, motivations and how they relate to one-another doesn't detract or get in the way of the core game experience, and is just there for people that enjoy it.
How do you get attached to a character with so little screen time?
epic. epic for the win.
I dunno, man. I never gave a fuck about that Luma in Galaxy, but when he sacrificed himself to that black hole I couldn't help but sob in bed.
BUT THAT'S JUST A THEORY
The reason why this part of the Mario fandom grinds my gears is because they have made it popular to hate on "vanilla" Mario games, most notably NSMB. While I do think the series could benefit from more distinction, I don't think adding more story and fanservice is the way to do it.
Galaxy showed they can make a good Mario game while also putting some hidden lore into it. It made the experience more memorable.
It doesn't have to be either cinematic deep lore or bingbing wahoo, you can compromise.
just depends on the characters I guess
>Why can't we have both? Is there something inherently wrong with wanting a little more nuance to your bingbing wahoo games? Don't you think the same old repetitive tripe of kidnapping Peach is getting old? As long as it doesn't interfere and there is a good balance.
I'd argue there's already a good balance, the level of story the series has is not getting in the way of the series remaining critically acclaimed. I'd be wary of attempting to put what is a bauble on equal footing with the core of the game. You play Mario for it's world class gameplay. not a story that anyone could have written.
>I don't think adding more story and fanservice is the way to do it.
True, I remember all the people pissed at the ending of Super Mario Odyssey because Peach doesn't Marry Mario. I think it's playing with fire to get people too invested in Mario's story or value it higher than the gameplay. Else Nintendo basically risk a perfectly good game needlessly getting shat on due to lack of story or if they don't like what happened in it.
they're trying to convince themselves that miyamoto hasn't made the series as boring and soulless as possible in recent years.
>the level of story the series has is not getting in the way of the series remaining critically acclaimed
nintendo could sell literal shit in a box and get good reviews as long as it says mario on the front.

Nice fanfiction.

What is Mario Pinball Land?
why are Mario fans so obsessed with making the girls fat?
>54 for a game that deserves a score in the 20s
exhibit a.
I think all Nintendo fat/inflation fetish art can be blamed on this item from Super Mario World.
This.
Also, it's fun. We know that Mario characers are like actors and can be put anywhere but it's interesting to imagine how the hell does that crazy world work, so it's fun to talk about the series in different ways.
>The Zelda Timeline was made because fans wanted to make connections when there really were none
Oh boy, here we go again...
Zelda games always had connections since they made Zelda 2 for NES. Every new game after that they explict told us that there was a connection. It was only after maybe Wind Waker or Twilight Princess that people started getting confused, but anyway, let's remember those games are called LEGEND of Zelda and legends aren't precise things. So just use your imagination and interpret the games as a long running fairy tale.
/thread.
As long as it's not """cinematic""" there is absolutely nothing wrong with having some mild depth in your vidya even if it's something like Mario.
Fuck look at Odyssey. Odyssey added a whole bunch of shit to the Mario setting and lore in a low key way that doesn't disrupt the game itself.
All of the stories in the Mario games, even the "deeper" ones, are still self-contained. They rarely have any effect on other games in the series. And yet, there is a small amount of demand for the series to go so far as to have its own timeline, a la Zelda.
I think the infamous opening of Yoshi's New Island makes it clear that the devs never gave a fuck about Mario's continuity.
