Well I dunno how accepted homosexuality is in Erebonia but since Oliviers shenanigans never got him into trouble and Rean is a well known and respected hero it could work out for him.

Arts get better when you use master quartz that speed up casting in combination with a bell of the same element, but that's not really doable until later in the game. 1 is probably also the least favorable game toward arts despite having the most extreme reductions from quartz. Falcom is just not very good at balancing their systems, so it's best to play the games how you like and not worry too much about efficiency.

The problem with 2 and to a slightly lesser extent IV is that they have a middle component that isn't as interesting as the surrounding material and feels more like busywork. It's not unique to those two games; Sky had exactly the same issue with its second game but with even less of an attempt to disguise it. If you enjoy the gameplay and some of the characters, you should be fine getting through that stuff.

It undershot their sales projections for the first half actually, it only started meeting them with CS3. Not that they bombed or anything, CS1 and 2 sold more than Ao did, but they didn't sell as much as Falcom thought they would. Every arc sold more than the one before it due to word of mouth and awards/accolades. The reason Falcom has such a hard-on for Cold Steel is because Rean is basically Kondo's self insert and it's all basically Kondo pushing this shit. Sort of like the FFXIII trilogy only existing because of Toriyama.

Arts are underpowered because in the Sky trilogy which you should have played first instead of skipping like a retard, arts were busted as fuck and crafts sucked ass for anything other than utility with a few minor exceptions. So they buffed them in the next arc (Zero/Azure) by adding some more auxiliary effects to crafts making them actually useful, then for some reason just buffed them again in Cold Steel for no reason so now every craft has 5 different effects on top of doing as much damage as arts.
Bonding shit was just a side thing in the previous arc (which you also shouldn't have skipped); it functioned sort of like the Gold Saucer date in FFVII where there were invisible points for each character (including the guys) that went up based on your choices in the story and the only affect they had was unlocking 1 combo craft per character and one extra scene at the very end of the games that gave you some extra backstory and/or characterization for each one. Then the director went full retard with CS because he has a hardon for Persona shit and introduced the current shitty system. Alisa is a bit forced because they still couldn't decide if they wanted a real game or Persona shit and just half-assed it instead. CS2's issue is a complete lack of pacing and that nothing fuckin happens in it. I mean nothing happens really at all in CS1 really, but there's at least buildup and a plot developing, it feels like you're not just spinning your wheels for most of it even though it probably has the second or third worst pacing of the entire series next to CS2 and arguably CS4. However in CS2 you have a relevant prologue followed by like 15 hours of filler followed by a relevant intermission followed by another 15 hours of crash bandicoot filler and then an abrupt and forced ending, then another random intermission that you won't appreciate at all if you fell for the "skip Crossbell" meme, then an unnecessary epilogue dungeon for no reason that has no relevance to anything. A lot of Trails games have a lot of "filler" ish content where you're mostly just dungeon crawling, but at least previous games' made the dungeon crawling somewhat interesting on higher difficulties. CS2's complete lack of difficulty makes those sections much less tolerable. If you're actually enjoying CS1 that much then CS2 will probably still be enjoyable though
