I think it was because every cycle they remake certain races. (Maybe only the strongest/one that gave them the most trouble?)

Mass Effect was always fucked. You literally can't write a satisfying conclusion for a series with this premise. Indoctrination Theory was the only one that made sense but if it was canon people would still throw tantrums because nothing we did matter.

It's really fucking stupid and an obvious retcon, as at the end of ME 2 you see the start of the reaper invasion and their are a lot of different looking ones in the cinematic. Yet in 3 all are, as you said, squids.
