I just finished Tokyo Xanadu. The dungeon design and overall plot fell flat on its face but I still had fun.
I'm thinking I want to play another Falcom game right way. Trails of Cold Steel sounds good. What other Falcom games does Yea Forums enjoy? I know Trails in the Sky is also popular here.
Trails is basically TX with turn based combat and better writing. I would suggest starting from Sky though. If you managed to get past the slog that's called first 4 chapters of TX, you'll be home with trails.
Ys8 is a must. Cold Steel is great when you play it 1=>2 right away, first game is like prologue. Trails in the Sky got same structure, first game is slow, second gets story real going.
Xanadu is their worst game I think.
Henry Edwards
Xanadu Next is peak Falcom and its only flaws are the red slime glitch and the lack of graphics options (that shit's still blurry at 1080p).
Are these shitposts, or does the post-Kiseki Falcom audience actually dislike their retro games?
Jordan Reed
Ys is just boring trash. VIII was a step in the right direction, but a very small one, the game is still mediocre.
Connor Miller
Don't fall for the Trails meme OP.
Aiden Cruz
Sky is OK to great but you need to play them before the best games that are set in Crossbell.
Robert Hughes
In what world is Origin anything but an excellent top down action game?
Christopher Nelson
Hardly anybody's played their retro games since the vast majority of them never got localized.
Kevin Gutierrez
Pretty much every game post-Dragon Slayer had a translation in some form or other. We're just missing a few LoHs, Star Trader, Rinne, some Sorcerian expacs and Dinosaur.
Ryan Hill
An excellent action game doesn't make you fall asleep.
Gabriel Lee
What are you falling asleep from, user? The game has extreme difficulty modes and requires active input.
Thomas Stewart
Tokyo Xanadu is pure garbage. The combat is LITERALLY field attacks from Cold Steel 1 and 2. Par for the course for all the retarded waifufaggot the game is made for, though.
Colton Robinson
The Falcom fanbase is unironically getting as shit as the Final Fantasy or Sonic fanbases. Every other post is always some asshole telling every other asshole why their taste is superior, and why they're so much better for disavowing 90% of the Falcom catalog. Fuck you niggers.
Christopher Cruz
Well, we don't have Brandish 3 or 4 yet, the Gagharv versions that got released in English were shit, and a lot of Falcom's REALLY old games are super hit-or-miss in terms of quality, so I can't recommend those to the average newbie. Sure Ys Book I & II is great and Popful Mail can be a fun time, but stuff like LoH1, Legacy of the Wizard, and a few others are really only there for the hardcore retro gaming crowd.
I've never played a Falcom game I disliked. They're about the only company left I can say that about.
Lincoln Martinez
Legacy of the Wizard on NES is perfectly fine. There's a big gap between something that actually requires hardcore determination to weather (like OG Xanadu) and stuff that just needs a touch of patience.
Chase Murphy
Play more if their games. Nobody with a functioning brain is gonna defend Wanderers from Ys, Cold Steel 4 or Romancia.
Juan Foster
Legacy of the Wizard is fine until you get to FUCKING Xemn's level and want to tear your own throat out over the awful block pushing puzzles. Seriously, the rest of the game is a decent proto-Metroidvania, but Christ do I hate Xemn's sections with the Power Glove.
TiTs is amazing if you like slow, story based games with great world building and attention to details. The story being told by TiTs, Ao, and ToCS is fantastic.
If you need more action and don't pay much attention to dialogue, it's not the series for you.
Dylan Morales
I mean fair enough, but yeah, most of it's fine. A lot of their games in the late 80s/early 90s bubble are like that, and then things go tits up for a while, and then it gets better again in the early 00s. Falcom's back catalogue is generally more approachable than a lot of dev's.
Jacob Ortiz
Stop playing Trails after Ao it goes to shit afterwards
William Barnes
>CS 4 is bad is there more of an npc opinion?
Jordan Young
Thinking it was good
Jaxon Thompson
I'm of the opinion that their peak era was from Ys VI to Ao no Kiseki. You had four good Ys games, five good Trails games, Gurumin, Zwei 2, Xanadu Next, a great Brandish 1 remake, and even something for the five people who played Vantage Master. Besides the quality and variety of their games, their sound team was also at their peak.
I wouldn't consider playing the Trails series, since is nothing but cash grab after cash grab of generic shounen games that seem original because by the time anyone cared to localize them the tropes that permeate them will belong to the last decade. Filled with padding, each single story has to be split in multiple entries because whoever who's in charge of adapting shounen jump latest hot take into a mediocre rpg with mechanics stolen straight out of Persona and Fire Emblem believes that you can't do a good plot without having to traverse each modern fantasy town over and over again with a goody two shoes master of all trades protagonist, his harem of dumb bimbos who apport nothing and his background male companions. A sad corpse of a series with even a more tragic fanbase, who cling to it either because they think niche is cool or because they spent years learning japanese just to play a literal fan fiction of a retard who played Suikoden and Xenogears and thought that a long lasting series in the same universe would be good, with political themes as understood by a 11 year old and mechas. Literally everything that Kekseki ever did has been done by literally any other jrpg series, but better and ten years before. It's no wonder why this shitshow ranks lower than the most cancerous weeb games in japan, the series has become a shittier parody of itself.
Jose Flores
If you want to play Trails I implore you to start with the start of Trails and play up to Cold Steel so play all 7 games plus the other ones that need to be translated in order to get best experience. Also play Ys 8 since it is an evolution of TX combat and maybe even go back and play previous Ys games albeit it may be hard to get into some of them depending who you are.
Charles Ramirez
Best girl indeed. Second best is a tie between Sora and the Prez. Asuka a shit
Carter Myers
>check if it's fixed every time this game is on sale >it's not Is there no turbo autist falcom fanboy they can hire for free to fix this bug?
Luis Wood
Asuka is best girl don't @ me
Leo Rogers
What’s the glitch and what does it do? PC only?
Carson Fisher
You literally can't play the game anymore
Ian Turner
playing Ys 8 on Nightmare mode and the difficulty is OK but not crazy like Felghana, should I restart on Inferno? Just beat the big chameleon fucker
Ryan Barnes
XN was a massive sales failure and implementing a patch would cost money just testing the game again to make sure it doesn't break anything else. It would be fiscally irresponsible for Xseed to go back to it, especially now that NISA is handling all future Falcon games. It would be several times easier for a fan to make their own fix and spread it around.
Hunter Young
Certain situations when attacking a Red Slime permanently fuck the game.
