I fucking LOVE minish cap
>Oracle of Ages/Seasons
>This game
Why doesn't Capcom make more 2D Zeldas, especially now that they finally left their dark age? They'd do a better job than the chucklefucks at EPD cranking out this 3DS ported turd.
This game is such a gem. Wish it was longer and more fleshed out
graphics remind me of this literal 10 year old game
Games?
What game is this? Looks sick
Why have a well literally touching the pond?
What game?
what's the game on the left?
Wat dis?
A render by andrewgilmour.com
The Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road
Sword of Mana
Just pixel fanart
Based, thanks.
What are these?
What's with all the minish cap threads lately? The game is nothing special and neither is the pixel art.
Your post is nothing special neither are you.
Two are just non-game-related pixel art and the third is Ni no Kuni: Dominion of the Dark Djinn
to trigger your autism
Post what you consider good pixel art
What's this?
My man
fighting game background according to google but I can't be fucked to look up which one
>Why doesn't Capcom make more 2D Zeldas
Capcom seem hellbent on doing whatever they can to not make any games on the Switch. Why else would you overprice ports if you didn't want an excuse to stop making games for the console?
Probably the last best original 2D Zelda that was made. Now we're getting a remake even though the previous handheld/2D was ALSO a partly a remake as it was reusing LTTP.
That's not autism, that's just common sense man.
I believe this one is from Street Fighter III, but I'm not sure
Stitched together from ingame map rips. It was so big the devs had to separate into 9 files
What dlc is this?
OH HOW QUICKLY THE TIDE TURN
Why do people like this shit? The color palette makes it look like it has a piss filter.
It kind of looks like Zelda Classic
What game?
Momodora: Reverie under the Moonlight
Did someone say soul?
Way too short unfortunately.
It's short and 'okay'. It looks like it was done by a decent indie studio but it feels like someone who's really trying to make a stereotypical metroidvania with all the tropes you would expect. I don't recall the music being all that great either. But if it's ever below $10 I'd say you might as well try it. Don't let the witch boobs tempt you.
>yfw you hear it
youtube.com
disgusting. the game is bland garbage
t. Vaati
Every raster image has visible pixels by definition.
son, i'll have to ask you to stop being a faggot. you know what he meant.
Gameplay was kinda meh but the art is 10/10. A lot of later GBA/2d DS games had just amazing pixel art since it was the last system to really require that to function, so it had the combined talent of all video game artists before to draw upon.
swiggity swooty here comes the booty
Dudely/Q stage from Street Fighter 3: Third Strike, however it's had all the background characters removed.
Would recognize this stage anywhere.
Is overcoming the distraction of the butt sway a part of gameplay
I mean, like I said, it was okay. I don't know why you're so quick to defend it from such a mild complaint.
Because sounded like a fucking pretentious cunt.
Cadence of Hyrule's sprite art looks likable enough so far. Much better than the normal game.
Alright here you go, here's an image with visible pixels, because like I said, every raster image has visible pixels by definition you fucking faggot.
Does anyone knows the artist ?
How is it that Minish Cap has much better graphics than ALttP and didn't need to resort to pink hair?
Look here everyone, a faggot bigger then OP. Look and be amazed by how he takes things to literally. This would explain why nobody loves him, not even his parents.
He just said the game is bogstandard, which it is. You could swap out any time spent playing it with any average game and get the same experience.
Still the best.
Awful
Fixed it for you.
Good pixel art is a lost art, you would put any gba games (not even better looking than snes era) on steam today people would call them a visual masterpice
Yeah it's good but it's not a game, i talking about all the indie shit you got release on steam. Few of them look like Owlboy most of them look like terraria or minit
Experience. Minish Cap was made way later, and the devs who worked on it had been making pixel art for a lot longer.
That's why a lot of GBA pixel art is so god tier despite the tiny resolution, because by that point the artists were all just so fucking good.
I like how the background is like a street fighter background.
Ladybug is toptier. I wish they'd make more games.
Owlboy is an exception to this, sure, the game is mediocre, but this is just a thread to appreciate good pixel art.
The girl on top blowing with the wind looks like she's just lying there having a siezure
Minish Cap was made by the Pixel Art Veterans Of Capcom (and as far as i know, it was the last time capcom did a pixel art game) the same guys that did the art for Darkstalkers, Marvel VS Capcom and etc ..
>Game uses a voxel style reminiscent of the pixel style of early zelda games
>Nintendo remakes an early zelda game
>"WOW THEY LOOK THE SAME WTF NINTENDO"
God dammit now I have to play Xenogears.
>pixel art so good you still have people mistake it for 3d models
It didn't look that crisp on the original hardware, it's mostly an emulator thing. Still an incredible game for the time.
>third strike
That’s a weird way to spell best game ever made.
>Ni no Kuni: Dominion of the Dark Djinn
TIL there's a ni no kuni game on the original ds.
fucking wat
wait doesn't grandpoobear use this?
If people are capable of reproducing it, its not lost, there are artist who sole purpose is to improve pixel art, just say you don't like lazy pixel shit, and is not rare to find games with good pixel art.
>Wadjet Eye games
>Zeboyd games

Just a few you can find by simply searching pixel art on steam, there a good pixel art games, just don't be a lazy faggot.
There is also on switch.
>Dragon Marked by Death
why is pixel so appealing? nostalgia alone?
limitation begets soul
I think the colors they use stand out really good
This Kind of low poly will Always Look better than photorealism for me.
t.SEETHING autist
Personally I prefer pixel art over traditional animation in 2D games, pixel art feels better for some reason, gives texture compared to the flat colors used in 2D sprites.
Nothing he said sounded pretentious
Nostalgia fagging
You sound like a really angry weeb
Not even Bayonettas legs are that long, massive feet too.
No, pointalism has been an appealing artstyle long before any display systems that necessitated it existed. I think it's just that when you have to consider every single drop of color used in your image you often get better results.
Is this a real game or just something someone made for fun?
I don't like pointalism but yet I like pixel art
Its a real game. They post webms about it on twitter a lot.
Undisputed. I'd only Like it to Look a Bit sharper. MS Sprites always seem to have slight Blur/Antialiasing going on.
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon friend areas are god-tier comfy
Do you think a third Person Shooter with 2D Sprites in a 3D Environment could Work? I'm planning to code a small Doom like shooter and i want it to Look special. Maybe even add cover.
>Nostalgia fagging for fanart that was very recently created
Stop throwing buzzwords at everything
>1.85MB
HOW
What's their twitter?
Megaman deathmatch did it. so i guess it works
Is there meatgrinder somewhere that I drop the chicken stack into?
LiEat was a nice trilogy and I really love the title theme
Its really really cute, but I doubt it will be that fun to play. They also got to this level of pixel art in just a year which is pretty nice.
twitter.com
The less is more mentality similar to modern graphic design
Also they’re colorful and soulful as fuck
Wasn't MMDM First Person?
I WANT A NEW BUSHIDO BLADE
The only issue with pointillism though is that paintings have this weird muted look when the dots of paint are really small, like a haze over the scene. As the dots get larger the colors become much more vivid. Maybe it's the same with pixel art.
oh sorry you said third person.
itd be roughly the same thing though.
Don't hurt to knock up a prototype
hey
guess what
>mixed pixel sizes
Neat, thanks. They're doing isometric or whatever you want to call that view really well, wish there was more of that.
More pls
Stardew Valley
that isn't mixed sized though, Gameboy couldn't actually do that
There's a ton of them on the guy's Patreon and they're free, his name there is saint11
Because gif.
What are the rules for what counts as mixed size then? The backsprite is scaled up to twice the size compared to everything else.
They're bound to the grid which is good, but still mixed size
I like his tutorials, but, they are too specialized compared to PixelLogic.
I can't render textures to save my life.
What game is that? Also I’m looking for actual fun fighting games I could emulate or play on my pc
Tinyburb a cute
its made up for the standard sized pixels though. It would be missized if there were pixels that wouldn't be possible, like if there were pixels 3/4 the size, or 1 1/2 the size.
Not that game but I recommend Rakuga Kids
Tech romancer
Did this guy do the art for ZeroRanger by any chance?
>mixels
>rixels
>zixels
I'm also not a fan of transparent pixels but those were possible on old hardware so eh
That just depends on what your standard is though. If you have objects in your game that are scaled up by 4 times the size they exist as in memory then having other objects that are 3/4 the size of that is actually just scaled up by 3 times compared to the game's standard.
Ah, nobody responded so I left the thread but as user said before it is Not sure how the game is going to be overall, from the looks it is pretty simple but cute overall. Made by a single person, only just started working on it so who knows
Someone suggest me a game.
I want to rape this blur.
What if a sprite is rotated but still rendered to be aligned to the grid like those rotating platforms in Yoshi's Island?
Love this game
I made a custom Pig Ganon, Dante, a man in a rowboat and a recreation of LA link.
Might post screenies later
>AAA pixel art and low poly games never ever again
The feel of feels
Do not rape blurs
yup, basically "compression, the problem" right there
go to bed racist
Would ideally still be manually corrected for any flaws, but they're okay
It's cute but goddamn does that look slow, also kind of stilted if I'm playing some harvest moon I need to be moving at a running pace at all times while everything runs buttery smooth
>transparent pixels
Okay in the light rays in the OP but not in where they have an infinite gradient, although I must admit they look fantastic
More like, 64x64 sprite resized to fit a 126x126 sprite.
>see the fish in the bar compared to the player sprite.
How common is to draw the pixel art in a large canvas, then resize to the target canvas ?
Well the person just started working on the game, it might improve
That fishing line is the biggest offender in the entire game
From my experience indies, usually ones with a very small team, if they put effort into art, they never come out as fun or that much of memorable. Stardew valley is an example of that as the pixel art is just fine mostly by its bright colors, the characters and some details looks like shit, but it has a better programmer than artist so the game is good. Same with owlboy and iconoclasts.
>and they're free
hahahha nice joke
JOON A SHIT!!!
Blue Mokou a cute
why ?
Look at these fantastic arms.
and you saying owlboy and iconoclasts are memoriable games with bad art?
>but it has a better programmer than artist so the game is good.
The game is a tad short but I wouldn't call it bland by GBA standards.
Yeah, it's a shame when the gameplay is a drag, nearly makes you wish they just did a walking simulator instead.
What's difference between the giant Mario and the Pokemon back sprite?
I dont have much hopes for this game to be something like 10/10 but something to just play and relax. Hell who knows how it will turn out, the creator said that its not going to be released any soon
Here's a collection of his stuff with some other potentially helpful bonus material. I don't know, I wasn't the curator.
mega.nz
But what you really want is Pixel Logic. It's a guide that goes over pretty much every little trick you need to know when making pixel art and animating it. Very classy and professional, highly recommend it to anyone that's interested. Download links of it get fucked pretty quickly so get it while you can faggots:
No, It was supposed to be up the text but got down there for some reason. Theyre both mediocre games with great art.
It seems that unless if it's a very small game, (or your team is bigger) if you don't take literally 15 years making a game (because both these games took around 7 years of development) you will be getting something poor because good art just takes that much of time.

i really like dq9 disgusting 3d models okay
That game would look perfect if the game camera had 0 fov.
Loved it, had environments that just make you happy to be in them. I never liked games set in depressing environments and Minish cap is medicine for the soul.

It got a complete English fan-translation just recently, good time to play it. If you look around gbatemp you'll find it.

Pixel art must be viewed on a CRT.
What a waste of effort
I don't mind a dark or sad game but every now and then you need something like Minish Cap
What game is this? Just found it in my gif folder.
Capcom should make another Zelda again
What?
a waste of effort
Sword of mana I think, GBA title.
Sword of Mana
Tarzan?
Pixel art looks better when it's in its 1:1 resolution
>Pixel art looks better when it's in its 1:1 resolution
view it at a native resolution
I think larger resolutions work out well for clean art like that. Pixel art that has a lot of shading can break down though.
Same.
Ideally it'd be 1:1 on a low PPI display
Based and minishpilled

Cheers anons.
Any SNES game that looks as good as this?
Yeah it looks neat
ty friend
sauce
why can't modern indie games have pixel art as good looking as this? something about so many modern pixel art games makes them seem like chinese bootleg versions in comparison
Pick your poison.
It takes artists a solid 5-10 years of working full time within a small niche to become really, REALLY good at what they do.
Most indies don't have anywhere near that level of experience, most don't even have professional experience and wouldn't have more than a year or so of hobbyist level experience under their belt, and given how quickly trends shift and technology (especially within the realm of game art) advances, it's rare as fuck to find anyone who's actually been doing the same thing and working towards any sort of mastery for those lengths of time.
It's also ridiculously time consuming to do pixel art to an incredibly high standard meaning it's beyond the realm of most small indie teams who can't dedicate 10-20 people just to art.
We're starting to see indie artists improve as they begin their second or third games.
That new game being published by the shovel knight guys looks really fucking good. Kinda like when we moved from the NES to the SNES. Give them time, they'll improve.
Darkest Dungeon
are there any mastered low poly games out there? is like the 3d power up for pixel art
How hard is it to learn to pixel art?
Holy shit what a classic. Radical Aces was great too
Why did GBA games have so much SOUL?
>Why else would you overprice ports if you didn't want an excuse to stop making games for the console?
they saw nintendo themselves doing it and they wanted in on that action.
The hub in sonic jam seems so comfy. There is also low polyodels for sonic robo blast 2: youtu.be
What game?
It's the low hanging fruit of the game art world, a few days is enough to learn the basics, a week to start making something that doesn't look like ass, a month to be decent, a few months to be good.
I seem to recall the devs saying they delayed the release a while ago, is it coming out soon(tm)?
Man, Synchronicity Prologue was such a cool yet short experience, I cant wait for Atlus to make a full fledge game out of it.
Agreed.
this year I think
It's time consumming not hard, i can do basic stuff with fucking paint.
Sonic Jam is aesthetic as fuck.
Not that difficult, but, you will have to learn fundamental of art, the pixel logic book offers a good introduction.
literally work 5 mins from this station
Doesnt look anywhere near as cosy irl
game name? google is giving me that pervy french show
The GBA is essentially a portable SNES, and that level of hardware is a perfect mix of powerful enough to be expressive but not powerful enough to let computers automate what should be creative processes in game design.
breath of fire 4
you must have some experience with drawing and be good with shading, pixel art its ALL about giving form to the object, if you have that, you gonna be good really fast.
details can be ignored. (most of the time)
BOF4 is a nice example
any ps4 game
Advance Wars is primo pixel art.
3d computer blocks are souless
something actually drawn and animated is soul
this doesn't look like it's from a game
is this from some artist's blog instead?
>"Pacifist"
I hate this meme
most of owlboy sprite work was created with paint btw
SNES game color palettes are so ugly
I don't know their names but if you look at the big orange skirt then everything moves faster but if you look at her hands or face everything moves slower
lmao, now i get why they made 10 years to finish it.
>What game?
Need for Madness
holy fuck
Nope, just checked and its the Susukigahara Field from samurai shodown. Look at the moon.
This is Vagrant Story, right?
Better color palette, I think. Non-Mode 7 games (which could use 256 colors at the same time) was limited to number of colors on screen (anywhere from 96 to 120), whereas the GBA had over 500 colors to display on screen at any time.
Pixels aren’t supposed to be visible. On a CRT everything blends together and looks much more organic.
Games like Cuphead are the natural evolution of 2D artstyles from /vr/ days. Faux retro indie shit is zoomer garbage pandering to emulator kiddies.
snk games always had god-tier pixel art.
I want to like BoF3's sprites but the way some of them differ so much from the final portrait bugs me immensely
actually no, the sprite art was always one of the first things to get finished (and the artist eventually started using photoshop as the game got bigger)
they were an inexperienced team, the whole game was a mess.
if you are curious i highly recommend you to mess with the sprite folder, there is a bunch of interesting stuff in there.
i freaking love the art of owlboy, but the game is pathetic.
Because, like chinese bootleggers, they're copying the results of someone who had all the necessary knowledge and experience to create something beautiful with integrity. It looks like something you've already seen, instead of being its own thing, regardless of technique.
It's a different take on expressing reality, and this is the main appeal of art
A perfect picture grounded in reality is impressive, but at some point it becomes just a mirror or a photo
i think they changed the artist for the portraits later, but the sprites were already done at that time and remaking them would have been a huge effort
>pixel art only existed on consoles that had to be hooked up to a crt
I mean there is a lot of pixel art designed around how a CRT looks but that doesn’t mean crt is the only way pixel art should be seen
they also just don't know how to make good graphics and it shows. indie pixel shit is just what they use as a substitute for a real art style - whereas in the old days, pixel art WAS the art style.
Thank you user
Be it on a CRT, or through a handheld LCD’s pixel grid, it didn’t look as harsh as the upscaled shite in this thread.
But there's just something so *right* about every visual asset on the screen falling into a grid in an interactive medium. When a sword you slash through an enemy completely replaces their body's pixels with its own like it "clicks", or completely taking up the width of a door, instead of sloppily clipping or sliding through like in 3D games.
BOF4's portraits are REAL good tho
Oh wow that's disgusting
Nah it looks super pixelated on a GBA.
>klolonoa zolo
Frogatto.
Is BOF4 any good?
I tried playing the first two games on GBA but dropped them after an hour or so bored out of my mind.
If you’re looking at the screen through a magnifying glass.
That looks like garbage, then again, so does most 'indie' stuff on pc.
I mean gba screens and ds screens definitely had a noticeable grid around the pixels that separates it from how it looks on a computer monitor but the individual pixels are still very visible
3 and 4 are the best ones
The frog looks like he came from an entirely different game
If you think about it wouldn't anything you're viewing on a monitor have visible pixels?
No, if you're just looking at the screen.
PSP is the same.
I love Sonic CD
Sweet i'll give em a shot, the art is tops.
its really easy but most of it is fun.
the best part of the Late BOF games was always the ART.
BOF4 (and most of 5) has of the the best art direction i have ever seen.
Tatsuya Yoshikawa is a fucking god.
The pixel grid creates a vastly different image compared to raw upscaled pixels.
Visible pixel grid != raw pixels
No. Fucking coon.
Still baffled that this got so many good reviews. Guess because thr dev is friends with many "journalists". The dialogue box clashes so hard with the rest. Looks so soulless.
>are there any mastered low poly games out there? is like the 3d power up for pixel art

why does that mech look like the green m&m
Do you even own a fucking handheld? Or are you just sperging for the sake of it?

I own nearly every handheld released. Only the DSi XL’s screen makes cakes look abysmally pixelated.

It's kind of impressive that I've finished that game once around 20 years ago (well, more like 5 or 6 times back to back for different routes/endings/whatever), but that I recognise it at a glance.

Here's your pixel art bro:
thanks based chaotix user

The only thing about the GBA that pisses me off is that because the original GBA didn't have it's own light source every game had to have a gaudy ass color palette. Every game looks like the brightness setting was dialed up to 1000.
thanks doc!
My brain is fucking ruined. I know exactly what is happening here but I don't know how to drive a car.
obrigado doutor
Here's an interesting article on the subject
>the game is mediocre
I feel like all it was missing was a map, one more dungeon and an actual fight against the pirate at the end. All things you could fix with a DLC
SNK did some amazing work on Neo Geo.
That looks fucking sick
does this count
This looks like one of circumsoldiers' models.
that was gay
>Nostalgia fagging for fanart that was very recently created
Are you retarded? It was recently created but it makes us remember old pokemon games and creates nostalgia you fucking brainlet.
It's sad. At least pixel art still has some nostalgia friends reproducing it in new products. But I don't think we'll ever see low poly 3D like this again.
Except it looks nothing like any pokemon game.
yeah, I remember them being pretty good and comfy, but they really get BTFO by the gba
Chhhheeeennn
t. no imagination
Add Cave Story, Inconoclasts, Shovel Knight and Freedom Planet 1 & 2 on there.
Continuing from this, while it's clear a lot of what of what makes this stuff great is that it's genuinely good 2D art, something nobody seems to have found a way to translate to 3D, stuff like and clearly show there's something about the actual pixel visibility that "feels" different to clean lines.
Even when you can't see the pixels clearly or you squint, it still seems different to clean HD.
Can anyone explain this? I can only assume the way the lines and shapes feel plays a part.
OLD = NEW
GOOD = BAD
Shin Megami Tensei: Synchronicity Prologue
Touhou Luna Nights
I mean the closest as its ever gotten to that was maybe Mystery Dungeon. But even Mystery Dungeon looked debatably better. You'd need a lot more than just imagination to connect that with any Pokemon game out there right now.
First one is touhou luna nights

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets GBA looked damn good. Especially on the Micro.
Is this one of those threads that if you claim to like pixel art you somehow must hate modern games?
danke doctor
Yeah. Didn't look anything like that, did it?
Of course it didn't. First gen looked like trash. Pokemon peaked in gen 2 and it doesn't look like that pic either, but you're dumb pretending you don't know why pixel art that vaguely resembles the original game would make people remember the actual game and feel nostalgia.
Ask and you shall receive
What is this?
It's not even vaguely reminiscent.
I believe there is a limit to the resolution and the amount of colors used in a single sprite that changes it from pixel art to normal 2D art, a single 512x512 sprite don't feel like pixelart due the AA and the amount of shades.
