The game isn't actually that hard as people make it out to be. As a kid I thought it was ridiculously hard, but I beat it pretty easily as an adult a couple years ago. The big secret about the game is you need to stop playing the game as an action game / beat'em up and think of it as an adventure game. The stages are filled with items that will help you through the fights and you need to find them and use them appropriately, as relying on your fighting skills won't get you very far
