I've only been into it for a few months now, but it's pretty cool so far. You have a camp, an RV and a cabin to decorate and furnish, which gives variery that I wish the main games had. The longer term seems to be about leveling friendship with the animals, which is not something you feel rushed to do. You have limited inventory space which is the biggest annoyance the game has and you constantly empty it out and have to refill it if you want to keep steady progress on leveling animals. Most of the furniture has to be crafted which is pretty cheap when you get into the game past a few weeks and cloths is the same but there's no need for it so you end up with little clothes to mess with if you don't take the time to craft it. Events so far are kinda repetitive but they offer pretty nice items.

Part of what made Wild World so great is that it took this one step further with its episodes. They took the concept behind talking to Sable to learn about her life and applied it to nearly every significant special NPC. These could range from simple things like Blathers trying and failing to overcome his fear of insects to the complex relationship between Sable and Tom Nook.
Sadly they don't put this sort of care into the AC lore nowadays, at least not outside of a few nods here and there. City Folk took a step forward with Labelle but took two steps back by cutting Sable's stories short and reducing the year-wide episodes to a 10-day event. New Leaf removed Sable's stories, turned her into a QR menu, and flat-out removed episodes in hopes that asking Lyle "what's up?" would make up for it.
It's sad how a franchise in which dialogue is a key component has been slacking on that department since City Folk. At least HHD tried to make up for NL's losses.

>get rid of the mayor shit because it just gives them an excuse to make the villagers overly nice, and completely goes against the theme of AC being about living on your own. PWPs can still be a thing like in AFe+ where nook built them or like CF's town fund
