Currently you can change you nickname, but you can not change yourusername, which is the one displayed in games
This is probably the biggest requested feature on Playstation consoles since the launch of PSN in 2006, and apparently the issue lies in the way PSN is configured which is a absolute mess even for the most qualified engineers
Sony announced late last year that they somehow figured a way to enable username change the same way it's done on Xbox Live for example, and som people have been able to do it through a beta test, but there hasn't been a word on it since

No, that's not how it works.
Some games won't use your new name. Others will use your new name but online syncing might break. Anything released after may 2018 is supposed to work flawlessly. Around then was the time they made the change from using one "ID" to an accountID and currentID, account being the original, current being whatever it is currently.

Luckily I chose a good username in 2012.
