Many things but for me it was the spikey haired anime guy with the large sword and the grand scale of the game that did it for me. I don't think it's aged terribly well but damned if it wasn't the coolest shit for every 10 year old when it came out

Nostalgia. Not that FF7 isn't a good game (it definitely is), it's just that when you compare it to other PS1 games that arguably (Vagrant Story) or inarguably (Valkyrie Profile) deserve to get remembered more, the only real reason one can come up with as to why FF7 is remembered the most, is nostalgia.

It's pretty mediocre, even within its own series. Nothing in particular truly stands out.

But in a way you are right, that Cloud represents apathetic gamers that probably never take game stories seriously. He starts out not caring, but by the end cares a lot about everything.
It makes it easier to relate for a lot of people, since they gradually make you care instead of like most games, where you're expected to care from the start.

Genuine subjersions of JRPG tropes in clever ways. The game pays legacy to the older titles while striving to build on the sort of identity VI helped establish. The camera angles helped the atmosphere and tone in ways that were cutting edge (at the time, FFVII was the most expensive game ever made), with audio that seemed perfectly timed with the amazing visuals. It was one of the most iconic cinematic games and helped cement the idea of the blockbuster RPG - an idea that launched a thousand imitators.
