People rightfully fear that their games will be taken away if the company decides to die randomly. It's the big downside to ANY DRM whatsoever. that's why I always advocate buying games on steam that do not have the API forced into it. To follow up on this, if I understand correctly starting offline mode will basically generate a set of keys that are valid for two weeks. Maybe once you've set it up once Steam will remember that you use offline mode and will keep refreshing those keys as needed every two weeks, but if you want to be absolutely sure then maybe start in offline mode once every two weeks.

Did you check the actual directories under steamapps/common because it never did this with me. If you reinstall those games in the same spot and there are still files there it will check their hashes first before downloading.

The game just started lagging incessantly for no reason, I'd restarted Steam, rebooted my motherboard, reset the CMOS, reseated the video card, re-seated the ram, and reinstalled the game now twice.

Now is it latency lag (normal internet lag) or is it machine-lag where the framerate tanks or the game semi-freezes?

The former is when it can connect but the servers report a busy status. The latter is when it can't connect to the servers at all. The trick to getting Steam into offline mode is quite literally taking your computer offline by disconnecting from the internet while opening Steam. Works every time as long as you have credentials saved.

It only dips when there's a lot going on. And when it does dip, it only hits +65.

The game stops characters mid-jump, they freeze in motion, as if the packets are just being tossed around willy-nilly.
