There are 4 rounds and each round is basically a gauntlet of fights against every single character in the game up till that point. Disgaea 4 actually has more options to skip fight scenes to can just turn them off. Press a button to skip them (triangle) or fast forward them at will (hold R). You can even fast forward the walking speed in options.

Are your stats near or completely maxed out? If so then you got to load out the right evilities to crank your damage up even higher. Valkyrie's Assault Attack works wonders if you have a stupidly high movement along with Magic Knight's Elemental Force to power up your spells even further.

Magic Knight hands down. She is flexible on the field with her ability to use sword and magic, which makes using her a total joy. Sure she is better with magic but its still nice to use swords with her and thanks to 5's elemental sword skills, its a viable option now. I do wish the secret ultimate skill came with an element version for her though since she only gets one wind sword skill.

I am fucking terrible at these games, but I want to get into them so badly. I have 1-4 and I want to play them in order, but it's just so hard for me.

You got a long ways to go before you can beat her at her best. Until then just lower her enemy level and she should be much more manageable.

Just do the story for each and get into the post game in 4 save yourself some trouble. Also it's really easy just to power level the MC and make them handle everything in the story. 1 is the worst when it comes to leveling but if you just focus laharl he can clear pretty much every map in the story alone.

Its best to play in order since each game adds onto the last. As far as which versions, the handheld/PC versions are the way to go as they come with all the DLC and extra content. Stories are mostly self contained but do have characters from previous games making appearances.

Depends what you want.

Do you want to get into them to the extreme or would you only care about the story?

If you're completionist and like grinding, each one will last you 100+ hours easily, potentially several hundred for the earlier ones but the grind is easier to get into on the newer ones.
If you just want the main story content (which is how I played the series until 4 and is perfectly reasonable), each one is maybe 20 to 30 hours so not actually THAT long for a JRPG.

He was weak even by his world's standards. Even after Drazil injected him with power for the Virtuous > Gig transformation, he was still way weaker than Drazil/Haephnes. Final battle of both routes has Revya/Gig being powered by all the souls of Haephnes so its not really Gig's own power.

Yea the style and the pure amount of levels possible blew everyone away. La puecelle was their most popular game before that and had a very popular ending where the main character became a demon lord.

disgaea 1 is the only good game in this series, afterwards the writing became a neptunia tier meme/reference fest and the gameplay instead of actually fixing the issues with the original took them as core mechanics of the series so the main "improvements" are just more shit to grind

it's clear that NIS focuses on actually interesting gameplay concepts and writing in their other games, and use disgaea as a way to make lots of DLC money off whales in order to fund those passion projects

What do they ignore? Just because he admits that he likes his friends does not mean his personality does a 180. In fact in half his cameos he is chasing Etna because he does not like that she is gone. Nothing happens in Disgaea 1 to change the way he acts so drastically he just comes to terms with his own emotions and becomes a slightly wiser ruler.

after 1 every character is just a single running gag they have to say in every scene featuring them and then there's a shitty serious ending that comes out of nowhere after the first 80% of the game is just the characters fucking around

compare that with disgaea 1, that actually understood how to tie wacky shit and serious stuff together in interesting ways, like how the one flat chest joke made in the whole game is actually just building off another joke about how laharl can't handle big breasted women saying nice things, which is itself playing off the serious issues with his dead mom

if disgaea 1 was written like the later games all the shit that happens in the red moon/prinny chapter would be at the very end of the game and explained in 5 minutes

At the start he was a loud, brass brat. By the time you're in Celestia hes way more stoic and reserved. He matured over the course of the game and when you compare the two its obvious.

the main difference with 1 vs the other games (besides a slightly more thought out setting) is that for most of the game you only have three main characters that are very clearly designed to play off eachother, and then later on you get the defenders of earth who are a similar trio

later games are an ensemble cast of gimmicks

Story is subjective honestly as 1 was my favorite for a long time story wise but it also had flaws. But in terms of gameplay it was surpassed long ago by the improvements of the others.

I think it's a bit overstated the same thing happened when vegtea admits Goku is better. People expected him to not be an asshole in super but people don't just do a 180 change in personality when their values change.

Exactly the same as they do in newer Disgaea games. It's literally just an asset flip besides for whatever specific characters and units they absolutely had to make new sprites for. But even some old monsters just got their sprites outright replaced by newer monsters that took their place anyways, like stumps turned into mushrooms, manticores turned into bone dragons, galactic demons turned into baciels, etc.

And no, it doesn't do anything to update the gameplay at all besides healers getting exp for healing. You're playing almost literally just Afternoon of Darkness but with the sprites swapped out. Only play this one over other versions if you absolutely have to have catgirl thief or trap male healer when you play.

Me and some friends are getting everything togther to start a disgaea RP. we nearly got the system down, but the real kicker is it's rogue-like. We start as prinnies and after ganging up on a reaper (like 50 prinnies vs 1 reaper), we forcibly reincarnate (using his scythe) to avoid paying for our sins. We are turned into random results and throughout the RP we'll be able to do this 2 more times. from our results we are suppose to kinda make a character out of them. However the main antagonist was also one of the prinnies that was reincarnated with us and feels the whole prinny/reincarnation thing is BS and we have to stop him (cuz we kinda caused it.)

Also can't wait for disgaea 6

It's not any specific fire spell, it's any explosion effect. I had the freeze happen with Flonnezilla at the part she destroys the planes, and then again when I destroyed a Geo Symbol. Funny thing is I had no issues through the whole story with the game out of the box, and those crashes only happened after the patch that supposedly fixed it.

However, people did discover that if you load your save file, then open the in-game menu and load it again prevents crashes for some reason.

Disgaea games are actually way more resource intensive than they look. Part of it is the game having to load a whole bunch of data to memory for every character in your base and every enemy along with their items, another is NIS' spaghetti code.

Some are, some aren't. The game likes to play on the fact all members of a class look the same, but have different personalities. There's the creation choice of course, but many NPC and minor demi-bosses are generic with strong personalities as well.
Also usually when a monster says "I'm actually female/male" it's about the individual you talk to, it's not all of them.

I still remember the friend I gave Desco in my first D4 playthrough. They were always together, since their buffs stacked on Desco repeatedly.

Beastmaster had

>Team attack chance with monster becomes 99%.

And Desco had
>ATK increased by 20% per adjacent ally unit
>Increase stats by 20% when HP becomes below 2/3 and 1/3
>Decrease the obtained Mana by 30%, but increase ATK by 50%
