Yes, it's pretty good, but for completely different reasons when compared to the Original Trilogy.
A massive amount of content, story still great and top-tier worldbuilding. However, the character development is lacking and presentation is pretty bad as far as RPG Maker games goes.
Also, it's not a spinoff, it's a sequel... kind of. Playing the OG Trilogy is optional but strongly recommended.

I have no idea what you've heard, so hard to tell.
Is it grindy? Eh, maybe, but only in the sense that something like, say, Dragon Quest is grindy, in the sense that there's so much shit to do if you're trying to recruit everyone + do sidequests + get everyone's drops/steals/panties + unlock jobs that it never feels like idle time. And once you reach endgame, the game just pretty much turns into Disgaea, where character optimization and efficient grinding becomes the norm so that you can reach new, absurd heights to face even more absurd postgame challenges.
Is the story bad? The characters aren't as well developed, sure, but the story is still fantastic. The fact that it has plenty of meaningful choices is neat addition.
Is the porn good? Arekishi and Xelvy do a lot more characters this time around, and Shiki is always top-tier stuff, so I think this answers itself.
Sadly, the presentation is awful. Not much to say about it, basic RPG Maker interface and graphics are a huge letdown.
