They should cut the entire roster. Start from scratch, and craft the roster based on what's most relevant to Nintendo, both past and present. Every "veteran" that happens to get back in (Mario, Link, Samus, etc) would have entirely reworked movesets that are much more faithful to their games. It would also be made immediately clear that "cut" characters are not being re-added as DLC.

The focus would be on quality over quantity. If you think that's crazy, consider how much crazier it would be to try to outdo Ultimate in terms of roster size.

I've always wanted to replace Kirby with a version of himself that was more dependent on the copy abilities. No more "Mario Kirby". If Kirby eats a fireball, he becomes fire kirby. Neutral B- Firebreath, Side B- Burning Attack, Down B- Flame Wheel. Up B is always some kind of warpstar attack similar to Final Cutter regardless of his current mode.

Echoes are a non-zero amount of effort. Sakurai decided to use that effort to wank off Uprising more instead of representing something else.

None should be cut in a ideal world, but if we are being realistic in that resources and Time is not infinite and a reduced roster is very likely i would say the only sensible priority is in order:

Cut the echoes.
Cut the clones.
Cut third parties.

Because it is best to preserve as many unique play styles as possible and i think that if sacrificing all clones and echoes adds up to enough effort to preserve even one unique it is worth it and consider how many clones and echoes there are at this point, a iconic Nintendo Game should cut iconic Nintendo characters. Then style the DLC to contain, one echo, one clone and one 3rd party "a pack" some new and some returning prioritizing order on fan demand.

Cut Spirits if they won't give info blurbs to the damn PNGs.

In a ideal world the roster is the same + whatever DLC we got for Ult but with moveset reworks for veterans who have theirs have poor relation to their source game and further decloning of Echoes to get them more variables to become fullfledged clones.

Villager is more fun to play than Isabelle is. I remember a million people talking like "when this game comes out I'm just going to switch over to Isabelle because she's a more realized animal crossing character" and then people got bored with her in two weeks.

If Dark Pit is litterally the minimum amount of effort that can be put into a """unique""" character, then you'd need to take at least one other character out as well for taking him out to mean anything because it by itself that action wouldn't give you enough time to add anything.
