I've been playing since 2006, and I believe I've funded a small house over that many years. I don't get got by Gachas, but I've gotten got by by far worse sometimes on SL. But that's because I roleplay on it and I spend dollars that add up on miniscule shit for it.

A simple furry avatar is cheap, but if you want to look decent, you'll probably have to get a mesh body to accompany it beforehand, unless you're talking about female furry avs, which there is a few that actually come with bodies. Probably 2000L if I remember correctly.

imvu is a joke compared to what you can do in SL in terms of playing barbie dress up. SL has almost no limits to polygon count, so you get people making very intricate models witha level of detail you wouldnt even find in AAA games. (of course the lighting engine is a bit outdated but theres ways to work around that)

You dont need to own land to play second life. Owning land is only if you want to build your place but even then you can just rent. Dressing up fancy will cost you ~20-50$ for a good base avatar, but theres a lot of people who will just give you free shit / easy to whore yourself out

The only limit at this point is your own creativity and will /skill to make things.

Right now the Sl skeleton got something like 170 bones and you can wear animated attachments on top of that. In theory you can make (almost) ANYTHING with it.
Examples:
Dragons, spiders and other beasts
furries in all shapes and quality
Robots
Giant mecha
Giant humanoid
Slimes
Someone recreated the eldritch horror nun from skull girls complete with changing body parts
Anime
Normie human avatrs in all shades of color and tits & ass sizes

The only limit is that you cannot make animations that resize bones, so you cannot for example make avatars that would rely on some gimmick like an expanding fist when punching or similar

Short version? Anything you can make in blender you can have in SL
Long version? There's a huge selection of already existing clothes, bodies, accessories, etc with more and more each month coming to in-game shopping events
It's actually amazing how alive the content creation scene is
The only limit is that you can only use SL's default skeleton to rig stuff but you can use two of them now with animesh attachments

in SL you are not limited to a single body shape / type, the only limit is the ~170 bones in the SL skeleton which can be position freely so people basically make replacement bodies for the regular body you start with.
This lets you be anything from a tiny spider to a giant mech or things like lamia/naga or driders/centaurs

You wear an "Alpha Layer" to hide the ugly default body and then wear whatever Mesh/Modelled body you buy separately over it as your new look/avatar. It's basically Mr Potato Head with DLC out the ass and you can just draw on top of the (literally) potato base.

I swap between maitreya and freya with a custom skin based on a template that's floating around. Robot skins are kinda hard to come by, which is why I tend to go for bodysuits and work backwards form that, and hide the difference with clothing (though that's just a personal choice)
Ey thank you! There's a few robot avatars though I would have to say there isn't a ton of parts, so I'd recommend it when you have a bit better handle on how things work in SL, though when you make your own robot they turn out really unique.

They didn't have outfit saving early on, so you just copied all your stuff into folders manually and wore the folder like an outfit, but they added a proper outfit system later on, years ago. Hope you like Tree-view Windows-style folders and files though!
Not sure where account/slot/char came in. Your account is your name/only char and you go straight on to that. You can have all the avatars/looks/outfits you want on it and change anytime. You can make a 2nd account as an alt though if you need to avoid drama queens(and remember, this is SL, the population is one of 4 types: Perverts, Drama Queens, Normies on voice, and Griefers. Any of them that stay for more than awhile are all autists.

That depends entirely on who "we" is. It's not like you guys wear uniforms or always show a group tag or anything. But yeah I do avoid the Onatopp fags, I found their sim some time ago and pretty much instantly recognized it was a faggot nest.

Hi! I remember IMVU, and I'm really glad I'm on SL instead.
If you already spent money on IMVU, I would say that spending money on SL gets you much, much more. In addition, there's a lot of free stuff. Some people honestly do great with just exploring and finding random freebies and cheap stuff.

- Can edit your shape much easier than IMVU.
- While clothing and other rigged items can't be moved, you CAN attach many other items (like horns and bracelets), move them around to completely different locations, rotate/stretch, and recolor completely. Just make sure you're buying MODIFIABLE items - though even no-mod items on SL are leagues more adjustable than IMVU items.
- Because SL doesn't charge creators much (basically pennies to upload, which are made back immediately through any sales), there isn't a minimum cost. You can get freebies or other cheap stuff. There are certain avatars you can buy for less than the cost of one piece of clothing on IMVU.
- Because of all the modding tools, you will get a lot more out of each item than you would on IMVU. Some items even have texture templates so you can retexture them yourself with minimal effort.

Basically, consider it a super sandboxy character creator, with user content. If that's what you like, SL is definitely something to try.

You DON'T need land if you just want to dress up, many people don't have land at all.

The biggest cost, though, would be a mesh body. Kind of like how the default IMVU avatar looks like a pile of hot garbage, the SL avatar is terrible and a decade old. At this point, people will replace the entire body with a custom mesh body that's much smoother. Mesh bodies have clothes made for them - not all clothes fit every body, and unlike IMVU, there's nothing really stopping you from making the mistake of buying and wearing things that don't fit your body. These bodies, and a mesh head, do cost a pretty penny.

For a regular, semi-realistic human, you will probably want to drop about $40 for a completely modernized avatar (updated to take advantage of all the newest features on SL). Find someone who can help guide you on your purchases, so you don't waste any of that.

The good news is that if you DON'T want a plain old human avatar, furry avatars are significantly cheaper! And also tend to be a ton more modifiable.
You can grab something like marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Orange-Nova-Snokra-Snake/13541472 for ~6 bucks, and it's full of features. For another $4 you could likely dress it up entirely, with a new skin, modified parts, and other goodies. And if you can use Photoshop, you can likely modify the skin and sell it for some extra cash.

Anime avatars are also around the same price point as furry avatars, and are about as modifiable. They may be a bit more expensive if you try to use a human body with an anime-style head.

There's also a ton of unique avatars, like horses, dogs, robots, etc. that have pretty large 3rd party markets of their own - if you've ever wanted to play dress up as an animal or creature, SL is one of the best places to do so, even with its limitations.

I'd like to add, prices aren't in dollars inworld. You buy the currency (or sell shit you made to others and earn it) and then buy shit with that. You can also "win" it via games like the Official Linden Realms "mmo" mini"game" (Where you just run around like a spaz avoiding terrible AI grabbing crystals for cash), or via player-thrown parties that're usually full of Gesture/SFX-spamming normie twats, or popular as of the last year or so, just leaving your (decent) avatar laying out in an AFK sim with a tipjar on and hoping for the best.

$1 = L$250, generally. Hair Prices are one of the few "stable" prices, L$250-300 - Outfits tend to be L$300-900, "good" skins can be L$900+ but you might find hidden gems for cheaper, and right now despite their age, Mesh Bodies like Maitreya run L$2700, and fucking Mesh Heads are between L$1200 and L$3500 even though it's just a fucking head, yes their pricepoint vs value triggers me. Most of them look like ugly glam model shit, especially Catwa

There's a lot of free stuff available, and while most of it is garbage, if you look hard enough you can find a cute, free pre-made avatar. If you do get into the game and decide to spend money, be aware that base models tend to be the most expensive avatar items, with clothing and accessories for them being (usually) dirt cheap.
