Sure we have GOG, Origin, Uplay and whatever but none of them had the means or the guts to actually stand up against STEAM and get exclusives that weren't first party. I'm here hoping that epic will at least force STEAM to make some changes.
On the customer side, just the fact that steamworks drm is a thing and that it’s hard to explore for hidden gems because of how much shit’s snuck onto the platform, plus they’re inconsistent with what games they sell.

It was always dumb anyway, and clearly fundamentally unscalable: the more it was used, the more money they lost, and through zero fault of their own (like what the fuck, GOG has nothing to do with international exchange rates, tax regimes, or what copyright holders do for region pricing or anything fucking else). It was basically a marketing thing tried when they were really scrabbling for traction. Of course it had to end unless devs/publishers wanted to take it on (they don't).
