If you can read Japanese and play imports, I'd suggest the PS2 remake of the first game as a starting point, but if you can't do one or both, then this one is your only relatively convenient place to start.

At that date they probably could have done better with a PS3 release than a PS2 one, but that would have involved porting it twice. The original ST5 came out in 2005 when the PS2 was still the thing, but by March 2010 the PS3 had been out here for over three years already.

Maybe, we'll never no at this rate but it was probably also much cheaper to port to Wii from PS2 than up a generation. HD ports weren't exactly a thing yet iirc, God of War 1 and 2 pack barely just come out i think

An oversupply of used copies. They made a whole lot more of the Dreamcast version than they did of the PS2 one. The downside is the probability that nearly all of those third-party sellers don't ship outside Japan.

If you know japanese or are willing to use rough.incomplete translation guides, start from 1.
Play the PSP/PS2/PC version, whichever you can make work easiest. 3 has the most complete translation guide, but even that does not cover all possibilities.

If you do not know japanese and are not willing to switch screens while you play/hook up machine translators, play V on PS2. Self contained, decent even if inferior to 1-3.

At this point, I think sega can release any of the games with little hassle, but it is extra work to make them playable in modern platforms. They will probably go for the good old 'gauge interest with Shin, even though we have not properly established a fanbase in the west to anticipate this game properly'

I remember back when it released folks on gamefaqs were comparing it to some of the late Saturn, SNES and PS1 releases that came in between or during new console gens and got fucking sidelined, bargain binned then became rare as shit and expensive. Sakura Wars did not become the latter showing how badly it failed to make headway here, maybe after the new release people will go back and dig it up.
