Banjo as a franchise outsold Golden Sun massively, just because their last game was two years earlier than GS it doesn't mean they are forgotten, the same way many games that predated GS are still more relevant because they were at least popular in their time, GS was never popular. It came when Nintendo needed RPGs for GBA and went into obscurity when actual RPGs arrived on the DS.

Yooka-Laylee was disappointing considering how much money that they had to work with but the incompetence of Playtonic doesn't take away from the fact that the fans funded it within a matter of days and it had 2 million + dollars in total funding when they originally only asked for about 260,000. That game proved the demand for BK is still alive even after Nuts and Bolts crashed the franchise.

I think a lot of the talk about Banjo right now comes from how Microsoft has sort kinda become more of a third party developer to Nintendo. From 2015 and until last year, all they had on other consoles was just Minecraft, but now they seem to be putting their other games like Cuphead, Ori (heavily rumored) and possibly even Halo, according to king zell.
So naturally that gives people some hope that maybe Nintendo and Microsoft have additionally talked behind the scenes about putting a character of theirs in Smash, and some would argue that maybe Nintendo/Sakurai would go with Banjo with it now being possible and after (presumably) scoring high on the ballot.
Maybe Banjo could be used to market Rare Replay if that comes to Switch

I'd assume they'd have to dodge the real-world guns like Snake, otherwise I can imagine stuff like the knifves/stunrods, various GL rounds, flamethrowers, spark shots, rocket launchers and even linear launchers being used. Beyond that is anybody's guess, really.
