I wouldnt call it a lootfest just because its going to be a long time before you see loot that really does anything really interesting. As for enjoying the game, my suggestion would be to change character if you are not enjoying it and see if someone elses style suits you better. Hopefully you have access to the skip tutorial thing so you can start at level 15(?) and actually see some skills in action.

The loot will eventually get properties in yellow text that do interesting things but nothing really good until you are level 60 minimum and probably closer to 80.
Its mainly the skills that add variety to the gameplay. If you are playing solo do not use sorceress (just a less fun wizard as a solo) or fighter.
