it's doable, I did it, and it's worth it, Demon's souls gave you some upgrade materials and soul items when you beat the tutorial boss, dark souls 1 gives you his hammer (useless for most), killing the tutorial dude gets you nothing, no extra consumables, no extra XP, nothing.
