What's it's legacy?
What's it's legacy?
Decent first half with a good variety of quality games catering to different tastes. Second half of utter garbage spent chasing the Wii's success that fucked the brand to the point where it still hasn't recovered almost a decade on.
1st half 2nd half really bad
Nothing because all launch units are dead by this point. When the non-RRoD versions were released the PS3 started to get games and became the superior choice.
How come? The late 360 still had quality exclusives
My only real experience with the 360 is getting one for free from my brother who bought the new slim/pro/black model 360, I booted it up and it wouldn't let me do anything without creating a shitty avatar/account
That was the last time I touched one
>invent achievements, destroying gaming in the process
thanks microsoft
Xbox Live Arcade will always be severely underrated
Man what happened this gen. We get less and less exclusives every console cycle now
>L4D
>360 exclusives
what the hell are you even talking about?
>left 4 dead
>dust
>minecraft
>witcher 2
>exclusive
Games are far more expensive to develop now so publishers are pushing for multiplat releases when they wouldn't have bothered even 5-6 years ago. This is particularly the case in Japan, since mobile's decimated the domestic console market, so they have to take Western demographics more and more into account. Plus console architecture is so homogenized now, so porting is much less of a drama than it used to be.
Exclusivity is cancer and breeds the worst type of console warring shitstain. There's hundreds of games this gen that could've easily been exclusives but don't because consoles are just prebuilt PCs with a different UI. Console "optimization" has been a joke for a while now.
Prey 2006
AAA games cost so much that you can't make them exclusive. Now Microsoft has declared that console generations are dead and are trying to sell their shit to nintendo
Destroyed Sony and usurped their throne.
Paid online.
Not really, the 360 pissed away all their momentum under Don Mattrick with the Kinect. The PS3 managed to equal its sales figures by the end of the gen.
Sony and Microsoft both lost a pretty dramatic amount of money on the 7th gen. Sony with how much money they were losing on PS3s until 2009 (around $200 per unit) and MS with the RRoD.
It marks the era when consoles gave up and assumed themselfs as bad computers, anything remotely positive you could say about them died with the 360
>easy to understand interface (was already on PCs)
>no updates
>no considerable hardware damage over running heavy software
>no environment influenced performance
>cool designs
Microsoft just went lazy as possible with what they had, and now they are backing off back to PCs with games
>it's
>it is
>not it belonging to
>its
Halo
unironically being the best xbox console because it had more japanese support than both the original xbox and xbone. pretty much every major japanese company was making games for the 360, even companies like cave and fatlus were making exclusive content on it
It has my favorite ninja gaiden game, and that's all that matters.
youtube.com
Starting the cancerous practice of paid online thanks to the retarded dipshits who supported it.
Red ring and going to shit in the last half of its life span. The slump of which lead to the disaster of the Xbox One.
Remember, the PS3 actually caught up and outsold the 360 at the end.
>the PS3 actually caught up and outsold the 360 at the end.
we dont know that, sony and microsoft stopped releasing sales numbers for their 7th gen consoles a long time ago.
>Starting the cancerous practice of paid online thanks to the retarded dipshits who supported it.
first xbox already had it and there was one console even before that which did it
x360 absolutely popularized it though
Hardware prone to quickly breaking down. Part of worst generation that killed games.
unpopular opinion but i think the x360 is the best modern console of all time.
Yeah, nope. Both MS and Sony put out numbers.
The PS3 ended up selling about 2 million more.
how come?
PS3 was a shit show though. I played bayo on a friend's ps3 the other day, the framerate tanks whenever you start dodge offsetting with pistols.
It's probably going to be remember as the system that almost gave MS domination of the market, only to shit the bed a few years later. The focus on the kinect and non game related programs at the end lead to the massive bungle that was their E3 2013 conference.
MS really had the perfect storm for success. Yet, they let Sony play catchup and let the PS3 dominate by the end.
>What's it's legacy?
That putting out a low power, high failure system is a bad idea. Also, using DVD as the storage medium when Bluray was right around the corner. (Say what you will about Sony, using 50gb Blu-ray discs helped immensely when game size ballooned near the half point of the generation.)
High failure rate and forcing paid online.
I'm still fucking amazed at just how many people give them a pass for the Red Ring/overheating issues.
You know, I don't think I ever knew anyone who owned an HD-DVD player.
>surpassed by the PS3 in both sales and library
killing the Xbox brand chasing the Wii success is its legacy
It's amazing that the whole format war between HD-DVD and Blu-ray even happened. (Bluray had superior specs and better DRM at the time)
It really damaged the market when your average joe sixpack decided to sit thing out until someone emerged victorious. Lead people to streaming and piracy as the result.
It's legacy is that it could have been Microsoft's complete domination of the market and installing themselves as market leader.
However, MS completely shit the bed by rushing to market and not focusing on the games. It's made even worse they did it during a period when Sony was weakest with their early PS3 fuckups. (Which Sony has learned from and won't let happen again.)
Was there ever really a war? Less than 1m HD-DVD players were reportedly sold
It was a full blown war. (With both formats being stocked for a time being.)
The problem was that Disney and Warner both supported Blu-ray from the get go. (They, along with porn, are the largest market share of the home video market.) It was basically only a matter time until HD-DVD died out.
Launch was mared by RRoD
Died a sad death due to Kinect
In the middle were some pretty awesome games. It slightly beat out ps3, everybody gets 1 I guess.
Wasn't the 360 controller the first to have clickable sticks, or was that the Duke?
People will say that controller was the best ever
Post proof.
>Wasn't the 360 controller the first to have clickable sticks
surely not, dual shock 2 already had clickable sticks, no idea if duke was before it
A sick usb controller.
Shoot em ups
>ctrl + f
>not a single mention of xbla
I will never sell my hacked Xbox 360 for this reason and no one will appreciate it
Had a 360 for years and wasn't aware
The 360 never died. It was the most popular console of the generation, the Wii sold more but didn't sustain anywhere near the population because of its shallow library and casual playerbase. The 360 was still kicking for a couple of years after the Xbone launched just because of how ingrained everyone was.
Xbone was just stillborn. The whole always-online shitstorm coupled with an extra $100 pricetag and Kinect 2 being required just resulted in corporate suicide. They got complacent, and thought they could force the market to comply. Don Mattrick was a mistake.
I guess the sole upside of E3 2013 for M$ was that it made everyone forget 2010.
>dual shock 2 already had clickable sticks
Oh did it? I've never played on Playstation so I thought it didn't show up until the PS3.
Still not sure about the OGBox.
Red ring of death and towel tricks
>Remember, the PS3 actually caught up and outsold the 360 at the end.
source, neogaf and faggotera
lol
>it's ok dude
>those people at neogaf don't like you
>you will get over it I'm sure
I actually anticipated that HDDVD would win. Average person goes into a store. Movie A or movie A for $5 cheaper. What will they choose?
Turned out HDDVD got slaughtered and that's why I'm a wagecuck I cant predict for shit.
i liked how HDDVD didnt have any trailers or commercials
thats a damn lie and you know it. 90% of time you boot up your 360 their would be an ad for xbla
>infamous, lbp
Fuck I miss my ps3. Also half of those xbox “exclusives” are on steam or windows store
>Meatboy, l4d, fable 2 (?), fable 3 (?), forza horizon, witcher, battleblock theater, dust, alan wake, minecraft, halo wars, dead rising.
Is this true? None of them?
I only ever saw King Kong on HDDVD. I don't remember if it did.
half of those ps3 "exclusives" are remasters lol. classic snoy, remove ps2 b/c just so you can resell the games at full rpice
fuck you nigger
Failure and an unearned arrogance that tripped MS into a hole they've never extricated themselves from.
A 99% failure rate
>halo wars, dead rising.
oh please, those games got ported like 10 years after it came out. by that logic uncharted 1, heavy rain, uncharted 3, tlou, flower, uncharted 2, super stardust hd, journey, etc. dont count
yeah, they don't. we care what games are still exclusive, because people posting now to ask what good exclusives there are want to know what to play on 360 rather than larp that it's still 2011 and argue which console was better for its time.
so you agree with me those games dont count then? k
>the last of us
>quality ps3 exclusive
cringe
>Rockstar Table Tennis
>exclusive
what the fuck
>The game was released for the Xbox 360 on May 23, 2006 in North America, and on May 26, 2006 in Europe. It was released for the Wii on October 16, 2007 in North America, and on October 19, 2007 in Europe
only in ps3 vs 360 threads will you see people praise a game like tlou
RROD
Paid online for P2P
turning quality PC devs into consolewhores
forcing paid DLC to exist (see L4D)
brought in the ''LE MNT DEWRITO BRO'' audience
ruined FPS with Halo
ruined TPS with Gears
lured Japanese devs in with false promises and the devs suffered because of it
but Dead Rising was cool tough
>highest rated exclusive of the generation, even higher than Halo 3
The 300 did. It was basically the flagship launch movie. And then Sony basically made the PS3 the cheapest bluray player on the market
not on metacritic
>ruined TPS with Gears
love this meme. the tps genre barely existed pre gears
>but Dead Rising was cool tough
It was cool how many consoles died when players were going for 7days survive achiev.
I was thinking about this thing while taking a shit the other night. How in the fuck did they get away with how common red rings were on the first gen of 360s.
Eight years of games with shit textures, no anti aliasing, and abuse of post processing filters to hide both of them.
standardised paying to play online on consoles. i dont even own a console anymore and that still pisses me off. have to pay extra to play a game that i bought, on this console that i also bought? fuck right off.
