Still better than shifter and the new enemy AI in GMDX makes up for a lot of it. Deus Ex wasn't ever truly a difficult game outside of its autistic multiplayer ATDM gamemode.

GMDX makes it a better and much, much more difficult stealth game
here's my problem with it: Deus Ex is not a stealth game. Stealth is an option, but so is painting the level red. GMDX all but removes that option.

Some levels were changed in GMDX but barely touched graphically, this was to accomodate changes like ledge climbing from Thief, which honestly you should turn off. If you can prove me wrong, I'd like to know.
I do agree with your first time sentiment.
I agree, that's why I think Realistic is nice because enemies actually die. It's a common misconception that Realistic is the hardest mode in Deus Ex just because it's at the bottom. Hard mode even in vanilla Deus Ex is a chore.
