I'm on the third tier of kindness and I've just barely started burger boy's palace. If I complete the palace as fast as possible will I be able to max out their social links before I get railroaded to the end of the game?

I'm assuming you're talking about Sojiro. In that case, sometimes he'll be available to hang out with, and other times he won't. Make sure to hang out with him every night whenever the opportunity arises. You're still a few palaces away from the endgame, so manage your time properly and you can max him out in a jiffy.

Should be able to if you focus on it. For social stats, don't forget to watch the tv on the ground floor of LeBlanc and to feed the plant when it needs it for free points that cost no time. Failing that, just buy books and don't forget the unique books the Library can give you

I get that Hifumi is cute and all but she was literally a scrapped Makoto who only came about only after Makoto was already finished. It's like asking for Atlus to revert Makoto to a previous design/concept that they already went through.

Let me switch out Futaba and just have the woman who can SEE THE FUTURE tell me what attacks and moves the opponent are going to do.

It's because Hifumi was literally a scrapped Makoto hence why they both have qualities pertaining to strategy and planning. There was no Hifumi originally, there was just Makoto who had long hair until her design was changed to have shorter hair. Makoto was planned to be the strategist from the start, but they ended up connecting her to Sae hence why they focused more on her uptight personality (hence her being an aggro fighter) than the initial strategist she was intended to be.

They just happened to create Hifumi afterwards based on Makoto's scrapped design when they needed more Confidants. I have no doubt that the strategist part carried over as well because of it and that's how we got Hifumi.

I feel like this whole idea of a "strategist" is kind of flawed.

The closest thing they do is have Makoto give hints and tips about enemy weaknesses during battle segments.

Honestly, much as I love P3-5, the social links/confidants need to be implemented better, both in gameplay and how your relationships with them affect the story. It's the one thing I'm hoping that will be improved upon when we get a Persona 6 (which won't be happening anytime soon, obviously).

Why does Makoto even have this ability? Shouldn't that be a Confidant ability for Futaba instead? She's the analysis character. Johanna doesn't seem like it has any analysis abilities at all.

Game is set in the Kansai region. "Other world" is set in a Sengoku period Jidaigeki with the party wearing period-appropriate costume. Theme is about moving from one era to another, taking the lessons of the past but building upon them, establishing a new beginning for the future. On a meta level, the game touches on several elements of new beginnings, such as the new Imperial era, the upcoming lowering of legal adult status from 20 to 18, and the transition of the Persona franchise itself moving beyond Hashino's control.
