wut, we fell behind briefly in the space race. We had rockets and plans for a satellite, we delayed launching them because we wanted them to be more reliable and consult with the Brits, not just wing it on the first go like we're playing Kerbal Space Program. With regards to rockets we were behind at the tail end of the 50s and ARGUABLY the early 60s (with regards to ICBMs, where the majority of the US missile/rocket money was going, we were decisively winning with regards to precision), but by basically every other tech metric we were doing just fine and exceeded in some ways. better computers, better communications infrastructure, better heavy machinery, better quality of life, etc. Boiling it down to one specific advantage is ludicrous.

That wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. There are an awful lot of people who don't know the difference.
