It's really just like playing cards with suits and numbers
Then the winds and dragons don't have a sequence so they can only be used for pairs and triplets

I used to play on Tenhou, and I like to think I was pretty good, doing well enough on Tokujou at least, but after many years of playing I came to the realization that playing mahjong was a an emotional net-loss.
I don't recommend it to anyone. I still had a lot of fun with the people from the /jp/ general.

how does this thing even work?

It's kind of like a mix of rummy and poker. You take turns drawing and discarding a tile to put a legal hand together and win points from other players based on how much fancy poker hand-style stuff your hand contains. A winning hand is just any four sets of three (either a sequence or three of a kind) plus a pair.
