/space/

just got my desktop updated/fixed after not touching it for awhile
realize I hadn't visited Space Engine in a few years.

What are some cool new additions to get me up to speed? What are some neat things you've found?
Post your screenshots, I'll be posting mine, this thread can also be for talking about space games in general.

I'm bumping OPs thread because most of Yea Forums are console babbys and heve never witness the true terror of space

I like to find dense areas of mountains and then stand on them. I feel I appreciate the scale of it more from on the ground.

Had tons of pictures of SE back in my laptop but it got nae-naed. Feels bad.

that's some detailed topography. and yeah I agree.
thanks

just visited their website, it's apparently coming to steam soon. not sure if that means it will cost anything.

Attached: scr00041.jpg (1920x1080, 104K)

Space Engine is awesome. Shame there hasn't been any updates to it in a while, but it's still great
I'll dump some of my screenshots here.

I never really messed around with adding ships and getting them to move.
but since watching TOS Trek for the first time I NEED an Enterprise model for screenshots

pic related with those Mass Effect lens flares I thought were cool at the time. Ignore those, but I just love seeing rings from the surface. I know it's not really comparable , but as shitty as NMS turned out to be, adding rings to planets added a lot of character to planets.

Attached: scr00051.jpg (1920x1080, 274K)

Thought I had a lot more screenshots than this, oh well. Here's the last of them

it's technically a "game"
try it out for yourself spaceengine.org/

>shouldn't this be on wallpaper board
nah space engine is interactive enough for me to post here. plus it says it's coming to steam soon on their website. it just so happens that some screens are wallpaper worthy

hell yeah. space engine is awesome

I really like how nebulas look. Imagine having the night sky be this colorful

>is a moon
I can only get so erect user

imagine the mythology that would have developed. double that with rings. imagine the art and poetry of a society with that kind of night sky.

I'm boring so probably bottom right or bottom left
or maybe even mid left

the controls for ships always felt too wonky to me, but they may have updated em or I could just have spent more time getting good with it lol

Snowy Planet orbiting a Black Hole

uuuhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Attached: scr00004.png (1536x801, 932K)

This one is great. Does the game actually do those snow effects?

it's not pretty, but the fact that you can visit other galaxies is crazy

my favorite thing to do is just move the camera slowly towards the top of the plane of a galaxy and just soak in the increasing density of stars as I slow down. with the interstellar soundtrack on loop in the background

Attached: scr00083.jpg (1920x1080, 398K)

I don't know, flying isn't easy but I've learned how to fly the ships in space. It's hovering on planet atmospheres that is difficult, because the more atmospheric pressure a planet has, the harder it is to fly. It's very easy in low pressure, like moons.

Attached: scr00041.jpg (1920x1080, 354K)

seeing the moons in the same plane as the planet was the coolest thing about seeing Jupiter in a telescope.

Pretty sure all the NASA photos you see of nebulas only look colorful because of image processing. In real life they wouldn't be visible to the naked eye.

geez I had no idea there were auroras

Is that elite dangerous? When did they had asteroid bases? I probably should reinstall, but I'm hesitant because I actually felt really lonely and anxious after exploring and trading for so long.

Yes, that's ED. I remember finding one of those asteroid bases about a year and a half ago when I started a journey towards Sag A*. It sure does get boring fast, but it's alright if you're looking for some good old fashioned space dread.

the captchas are becoming nigh unbearable

What LOD settings do you use for taking screenshots?

Thanks for this thread.

I wonder why nobody talked about Space Engine, it´s pure art and comfy, can´t believe is a one man project and free.

Attached: scr00008.jpg (1920x1080, 374K)

OP here, it's been years like I said, but I just loaded it up and under landscape LOD the value was at -1.000
np. having a space kick recently, not complaining.

don't remember what this was, probably just a graphical glitch

Did the update come out yet?

>all those moons
beautiful

Attached: scr00053.jpg (1920x1080, 116K)

from the news section of the site, it seems like the big changes will happen when it comes to steam

Is there any way to import a model and freeze it in place? I wanted to take some pics with astronauts, but they keep clipping through the surface.

Attached: aeiou.jpg (1920x1028, 300K)

freeze time before they drop through?
might be worth sending the creator an email or visiting the forum

I've been trying that, but it's hard to get the height exactly right.

Attached: scr00003.jpg (1920x1028, 362K)

everything I can find regarding static objects/models only refers to things in orbit like stations damn

Unpausing, letting the model drop, and then pausing again at the exact second its feet touch the ground works pretty well.

Attached: scr00004.jpg (1920x1028, 378K)

Bottom middle Mars looking one. In space engineers I love being on Mars next to a frozen lake.

Oh fuck, he's drifting away.

badass user
>that little aurora in the top left

NOOOOO

>space engineers
still haven't played it since they added planets

>Most of Yea Forums are console babies

Factually false

the catalog says otherwise

would be interesting if an actual game was built-up around space engine

Have you tried editing the model so that it's origin is at the model's feet instead of in its middle? maybe that's the issue you're having.

Facts say otherwise you're just a seething pkek

I'd try that, but I don't know anything about 3D models. Another problem is that he doesn't cast a shadow, which kind of ruins the realism of the picture.
I wish spaceengineer would add some kind of astronaut mode - even with a hacked-together solution like this you get a much better sense of scale.

stop shitting up my thread

that's what I love about KSP. nothing makes you feel smaller than walking after getting out of a ship

this is terrifying and i love it

>AAAHH SCANNERS SAID NOTHING ABOUT QUICKSAND AAAAAHH

Mid

Top comfy, beats every other walking sim out there

fuck
still says
0.9.8.0beta even though I uninstalled the old version

can someone confirm what version they're using?

nevermind, just downloaded and applied the 0.9.8.0e patch it's all good

now to find a TOS Enterprise, figure out how to install, and then figure out how to fly

Posting some (old) webms.

awesome screenshots. can never get mine looking that nice

I wish space were real bros

just gotta find that perfect planet

The colours are typically real but intensified by a long exposure. If you were close it would look dim but quite visible, if for no other reason than it covering the entire sky.

Is there any mod or maybe another program like space engine with an animated jupiter? I hope to one day see one that even has 3d clouds beneath the "surface" sorta like pic related

This guy has a bunch of Star Trek models.

>even has the galileo shuttle
oh boy. screens with it on the surface are gonna be neat

I spent like three hours on Space Engine a couple weeks ago, listening to the "Interstellar" soundtrack. What a fucking ride, bros.

That game freaks me the fuck out in the best possible way. Watching the suns rise and set on an alien world, flying through a pitch black nebula and landing on a rogue moon in that void, seeing nothing in the night sky, looking into a black hole and realizing that these perversions of science and nature are out there, collapsing everything unto itself.. its fucking great.

Playing with the time feature is trippy and fun, too - watching eons go by in seconds fills you with awe.

I think the new features I haven't really played with are the new "flight modes" that let you explore like you're flying a ship rather than just clicking and moving. I imagine it'd be frustrating, but could be fun.

what's new?

>listening to the "Interstellar" soundtrack
based.
here's another good song. first discovered it on that scaleoftheuniverse2 website, then reheard it when I was playing Kerbal Space Program.

currently download Trek ships to figure it out

WHERE'S THE UPDAT STEVE?

Attached: 1456579757820.jpg (8920x3080, 1.1M)

I recently loaded up Space Engine for the first time in a few of years.

I see it still crashes a lot (unless there exist some fixes for that). Don't know if I still have my old screenshots, but kinda want to take some new ones if it behaves itself.

>I see it still crashes a lot (unless there exist some fixes for that)
check your version against the one on the website, the 0.9.8.0e patch probably addressed some stability issues. didn't read the whole changelog, but it's worth a shot.
the more screenshots the merrier
