Now that the dust has settled, can we admit that there is no way to say that an A press is just "half"?

No

How can you half press a key from your keyboard?

Example:
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

t. TJ """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""Henry"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" Yoshi

He pressed the button with a big A on it. Pressing it performs a command, releasing it does not. The only thing you could call a half-press is if a button has a two-stage input wherein pressing it halfway down produces one effect while pressing it fully down produces another.

depends...

can we ever achieve a true scuttlebug jamboree?

Each press is one press. Whether or not you release the button doesn't affect the fact that it has been pressed.

You can disable key repetition.

Exactly.
Since there is no action connected to the release, we can deduce that releasing is a meaningless action. Making an "half" press a normal press.

Correct

I am tired of this autism. You can only tap a button or hold the button and that's it.
Fuck pannen.
Fuck speed running.
Fuck you faggots who defend it.
And fuck everyone else.

It's really more like 1/4 of an A press, because there are four distinct states during the A-press cycle; A button not held down -> press A -> A held down -> release A -> A not held down (repeat). And the level only uses one key state of the A press cycle, the "A held" part, and doesnt require a press, release, or "A not held".

You autists would fucking flip if you ever read an academic paper.

>Literally a bool
>Implying you can have a half state on a bool
Fuck off. If you want to bend the definition like that it's more accurate to say every single check, which I assume is every frame, that the bool is true is a press, so running around with the button held down will result in whatever course in thousands of A presses.

I can understand his logic and actually agree.

There is a logical reasoning why he wants to differentiate between holding the button down and releasing it. It actually is important to the game and the run he's doing. And I think that marking it as only a "half" is the best way to do that.

I just said that Pannen is wrong you mentally challenged idiot.

Jokes on you, I can't read

*clears throat*

>If you're wondering what a half A press is, read this before commenting to ask. I use a special notation that allows for half A presses. Specifically, if you enter a level already holding the A button, then that A press only counts as half. It's actually pretty important to distinguish between the A button being PRESSED and the A button being HELD. While pressing A allows Mario to execute several kinds of jumps, the holding of A allows Mario to swim in water, do little kicks up slopes, grab the owl, and twirl slowly. So if a star requires the A button to be held, the pressing of the A button could have been done at some point in the past, and just held until that moment. For instance, let's say there are two stars: one that requires the A button to be pressed (x1 A presses), and another that only requires the A button to be held (0.5 A presses). Individually, these stars would both require a full A press. But if these stars were collected one after the other, then the A button could be pressed during the former, and held all the way through to the next star to be used in the latter. In this manner, these stars together would only use 1 A press, whereas they would take 2 A presses if done individually. So during a 120 star run, you would round these half A presses down, but on a star-by-star basis you would round them up.

no like the reason he uses that phrasing is because he's trying to beat the game with the fewest number of A presses, so he holds down the A button for long periods at a time. While the button is held down, it's only half an A press, and sometimes he'll do entire levels only pressing the button once and never releasing it.

He could have used any other term, using "half a press" is misleading as seen in all the discussions about it.

AAAAAH PANNEN MAKE MORE NARRATED VIDEOS I'M BEGGING YOU PLEASE PANNEN PLEASE

>I just said that Pannen is wrong you mentally challenged idiot.

That's why I said fuck you too.
Fuck you.

are some people actually retarded enough to not understand why he uses the "half a" nomenclature

Based codelet, did you understand a single word of my post?

Full press and half press clearly have 2 different results for the input.
How is that even a question?

Not him, and I did and you are wrong.

this

But if he simply held the A button down when transitioning to a new level why does that count as half when he hasn't technically input a command by pressing the button.

0 doesn't equal half.

He'll """"""""""""Never"""""""""""" escape this meme. He mentions is on Twitter every other post. Everything he says leads to a half an A press response. It can't be easy being a meme.

no one chooses the meme life

pannenkoek2012 chooses them

Pannen doesn't give a fuck about what you soilords want after you ruined his last comfy youtube stream with your faggy little raid.

But holding it does have an effect, that's the whole point of why it's not 2/3 or 1/3 of an a press

why are horseshoe crabs called horseshoe crabs if they aren't horseshoes or crabs. Also crabs are not horseshoes. Give me a genuine answer, i want to see if you can actually follow what im saying, or you are literally not consciousness enough

I unironically agree with Tj henry yoshi about the A press thing.

>Hurr durr I took intro to comp sci and now I pretend like I know what I'm talking about on a Mongolian basket-weaving forum

I'm a fullstack web dev but thanks for the projection.

I was going to use Scar's incomplete transmutation as an example but since we are dealing with causality it is actually a lot close to a king crimson argument.
Assume the overworld in Mario 64 is non-existent time and the levels themselves are real time where things have cause and effect.
He goes into the level already holding A so in the confines of the level he has the effect of having pressed down the A button without ever having actually done so in the level.

booleans are confined to turing machine style computation. Pannen created a mathematical model to explain and regeneralize the concept pressing a because it is meaningful to explain things in these terms when you are doing the runs he is infamous for. It has absolutley nothing to do with the computation side or the "true essense" of what is "really going on". It is simply a mathmatical model useful for explaining things in reality. This is all basic philosphy of science and math. You would have a hissyfit if you every took physics 101

So its an A press

It's just a way of saying you need to have the button held. It's not 0 A presses but it's less than 1 new A press. It's a decimal because that's inbetween the two and can be rounded based on context. Calling it "half" because it's half the function of a full A press or whatever is just semantics.

BUT what if you held the a button down from the moment it was installed in the controller and NEVER allowed it to leave the pressed state?

FUCK TJ "HENRY" YOSHI AND FUCK BRAINLETS

Repeat after me. An A press, is an A press. It CANNOT be anything more, or anything less.

An A press, is an A press. It CANNOT be anything more, or anything less.

You really must be a compsci brainlet if you can't grasp this. He is not literally saying half an a press exists, that's absurd. It's notation to show how the a-presses used in that specific instance would relate to a full run. .5 presses means you come into the course with the button held. That's it, he's not "implying" shit. Stop making things so fucking literal, this was supposed to simplify things.

>Web dev
Oh fuck off you cunt

>fullstack web dev

It's a pseudopress, not a half-press.

*Scuttlebug*
*Scuttlebug*
You press the half A into my part
You send my sprite sky high when my lungin' starts
Scuttlebug into my brain
Goes to jamborees 'til my legs do the same
But something's bugging you
Something ain't right
My AI told me what you did last night
Left me lungin' in this thread
I was rising, but I should have lunged at you instead
