I mean, what could go wrong?
I mean, what could go wrong?
>Talks about FFXVI
>Tells us the climax of the game will be something that's unique and takes advantage of the RPG genre
>Makes the climax a twenty minute dungeon
>any criticism is met with "It could be worse, I could be Tabata"
At least they're not giving Nomura ANOTHER project to procrastinate on.
another crappy game
could it be worse than xiii and xv?
>what could go wrong
A solid game that doesn't innovate anything but polishes and presents already existing ideas well and has a banger of a sound track
Just abolish the entire Square side of the company and let the Enix side control everything, DQXI was fantastic
More low budget recycled shit that makes no attempt to do anything new, but adheres to industry standards across the board, and will be praised for no reason.
I mean, Yoshida is much better than Nomura or Tabata so at least it could be decent.
I hope you’re not implying that’s what XIV is.
Yoshida is alright.
XIV is going to suffer for sure.
Again.
>worse than XIII
I don't think it's possible to make a game worse than Turkish Soap Opera: Clicking X in corridors between Episodes edition, honestly. If it weren't for the visuals it would be a 1/10
Yoshida doesn't take 10 years to make a game.
A lot because its Square, but maybe the restructuring and moving around of talent will actually help things. Yoshi is a cuck with some of the mmo stuff, but FF14 overall is a very good final fantasy game as a whole so if it is a full fledged FF game that he is directing I have confidence in it
>FF13
>Decent game
Pretty easy since Toriyama makes decent number titles (FF10 and FF13).
Or are you going to tell me that somehow you guys are actually the "Grand Majority" who says the game is bad instead of what you really are (vocal minority).
Stay mad Yoshi-P fanboys
xv was worse. i actually beat 13 till the end. could not stomach 15 after the shitfest that was Altissia
The only redeeming factor of XV is the story after Altissia because they suddenly turn the goofy road trip into pure suffering.
I have decent hopes because Yoshida's favorite FF was 3, which had a lot of interesting systems like the job system and a fucking long ass final dungeon. But then again, almost every FF prior to 10 had a massive endgame dungeon that could crush your soul, it's just 3 happened to be one of the worst.
He also had some good ideas for XIV near the end of 1.0, but he trashed every single one of them to make a sterile WoW clone that would appeal to people who hate MMOs. He can really go either way.
>me oog
>me hate popular thing
>me no know objectivity
>oog like meme
>oog smart
Fuck off oog
Lets be honest, XIV only survives because it panders to nostalgia and fujos so hard it might as well be made specifically for them. The core gameplay is really no different than WoW or other themeparks, people continue to play because they enjoy the setting and its loose ties to other FF games.
This is the dumbest post I've read today.
Absolutely. I've been playing since 1.0 beta and those are really the main reasons I still play. I'm in love with the lore, the world, and the story but even the story has been shitting the bed lately. The gameplay is hot garbage and there are no RPG elements to speak of.
>finally make a good villain (gaius) after 25 years of garbage villains in the FF series
>make zelos after and shit him up because people liked gaius too much
what the fuck is wrong with square
No it survives because its pretty, runs well, has a good story and a lot of endgame content. The good story gets you through the leveling and you get a bunch of instances to play through once you get caught up
>what could go wrong
Another TWEWY edgefest port/remaster/GOTY version/3D upgrade. They've been milking their magnum opus relentlessly recently
The salt in the wound is Zenos getting into Dissidia over Gaius or Nael
Could be a good sign. But then again this is modern squeenix.
>finally make a good villain (gaius) after 25 years of garbage villains in the FF series
Dr. Cid and Venat are god tier antagonists
I don't know, from a gameplay standpoint, Zenos would probably be tons of fun to play as.
If he manages to release a game in 4-5 years I'll consider it a win already, SE hasn't been able develop a game without turning it into a massive clusterfuck of incompetence for about 10 years at least.
some machines are okay.
Even FFI had some mecha.
Just don't literally make the game the middle of the USA and nothing else.
I played the Terra Wars crossover recently. It was the closest I've felt to actually playing a final fantasy game for a long time.
It might be good. Say what you will about FFXIV but Yoshida can at the very least have his team make content in a timely manner, so I'm hoping we'll get a complete game for once. Not sure about the quality but considering XIII and XV there isn't anywhere to go but up.
>I mean, what could go wrong?
*looks at the mess that was XV's development cycle*
a lot of things
The mechs worked really well in FF1 because it was mysterious and in a lore sense, nobody really understood what those things were. They were completely lost elements of the Lufein, which is why instead of calling the dungeon a space station, they just call it a floating fortress. They've gone from that to making the technology almost the focal point of a lot of the games since 7.
FF1's background lore is somewhat interesting, but will probably never be expanded upon. A floating castle only accessible by a teleporter build into a sandstone tower, populated by computers and later machines and robots bent on stopping the light warriors. Remnants of an ancient civilization living in seclusion from the rest of the world, who sent five Light Warriors of their own to try and stop the looming crisis. A time loop that could not have been created without outside aid, yet bringing forth an entity far more powerful than anything else in the known world.
At some point, magic and science existed side by side in this world, and while other games might have similar aspects, I'd imagine none would quite be like the first.
Dissidia expands on FF1 lore a bit. The world is so empty because Lufein created Garland to decimate all the other kingdoms they were at war with. Apparently there was a summoner kingdom that was genocided, which is why there are no summons in FF1. The time period the game takes place in is essentially post-apocalypse because of the destruction caused by the Lufein.
Did he ever go into more detail on his opinions beyond his love of III and the very obvious love of V? I feel like he likes IX.
Garland, the knight-retainer of Corneria that captured princess Sara? I thought he was just a normal human.
So what part of 1.0 that was discarded for 2.0 do you wish was still around? Because the only thing I can see that's been changed for the worse is the massive reliance on instances and too much vertical progression.
Cutscene quality.
I think by "no mecha" he means the constant jerking off of cool super robots since 6.
Considering XIV is fucking full of robots and had an entire two year raid series made of almost nothing but mecha shit, I can't blame him.
It's all explained in Dissidia so it's needlessly convoluted, but yeah. Garland is actually a Manikin, which is a living crystal creature from the Interdimensional Rift that mimics its surroundings. They implanted false memories so they could grow it into a perfect warrior, and also made it fall in love with Cid's wife so they could have a leash on him. Dissidia happens as a process initiated by Cid to make Garland even more powerful.
The Warrior of Light is also a Manikin modeled after Cid.
Yeah but that's not gameplay and the story sucks anyway, so fuck it. Gimme better textures if we're gonna be graphics whores.
It could have MMO-tier combat.
Horizontal progression, deeper cross-class system, the idea of jobs being for group play and classes being for solo play, stats that aren't just 'damage+', interesting ways to interact with enemies like using certain move combos to break off pieces of their body, hamlet defense
>procrastinate
Do people actually believe this? He's a shit director that desperately needs a secondary voice to balance out his bad ideas, but Square Enix is notorious for their horrendous project and resource management.
I hate Nomura's style, particularly anything having to do with KH, but he's probably the hardest working fucker at SE.
Please never bring up Dissidia's awful attempts to DEEP LORE the fuck out of 1 again. It's absolutely awful and ruins everything even slightly interesting about the game in a bid to "explain" why it's different.
I'll take this over FF's shitty ass turn based or failed attempt at action anyday, 14's combat system is better than every other mainline except maybe 11 I havn't played that
Not that I know of, the comment about 3 was in reference to the Labyrinth of the Ancients/Crystal Tower/World of Darkness raids showing up first. There's probably additional statements about it, but I didn't go digging too far.
I don't know about his wants for 1.0 because I wasn't around until 2.0 hit beta, but if I could change anything about the game, I'd make it so the classes aren't so set in stone. Literally every class feels interchangeable within itself, in the sense that everyone who plays a class does so exactly the same without deviation. There's no customization within the classes, nor any specific customization within your character to separate you from others. I would point to raiding being the boogyman as to why, since everything has to be balanced around the most difficult content so as not to trivialize it or make unnecessary stresses for the players (Such has having to have an alt of every class to be viable), but the fact of the matter is that balancing such a thing is a monumental effort not to just have it be something ignored because there's always a "best" solution, such as WoW's cookie cutter talent builds back in the day. The other issue is that only a smaller chunk of the playerbase actually cares to experiment with different class or character designs, most preferring to simply look up the solution to a given encounter and roll with it.
Even something as simple as multiple weapon types per class would make me feel a little better, though I know everyone would gravitate to the most practical one for raiding.
And yet based Monolith Soft will show them again how it's done and release 3 better games in the meantime it will take them to release a shit underwhelming game like FFXV, that will be finished 2 years after with 4 DLCs. SE is an embarrassment.
That sounds lame, and is exactly why I'm fine with FF1 remaining in a bubble rather than being retold by SE. I guess sometimes leaving things up in the air on lore is probably for the best, because the answer will never satisfy.
you're a shill but modern square is indeed shit
Fairest assessment ever. The man's a bit thick in the head and most of his good games are carried by the planners under him, but he sure doesn't shrug off work.
>Horizontal progression
Agreed. Too late now, though. They're kinda trying to get back in there, but it's never going to work anymore. The initial system was flawed as well, sadly.
>deeper cross-class system
That's just a subset of horizontal progression.
>the idea of jobs being for group play and classes being for solo play
Again, this is just horizontal progression.
>stats that aren't just 'damage+'
I mean most of them aren't, it's just that there's no gear that does anything interesting because it's cheaper and easier to make a treadmill. I agree though, weird gear and choices would be nice.
>interesting ways to interact with enemies like using certain move combos to break off pieces of their body
There are bosses that do shit like this, but it's not specific moves because that'd just be a fucking nightmare to coordinate.
>hamlet defense
Fair, I think the next big side-attraction that they'll throw the relics behind should try to include the crafters and gatherers.
I think MS is a far better company, but I have hope in Yoshida. He's the only one who seems to know how to handle a project
As long as Toriyama and Tabata arent in the picture it should be decent at least.
Sorry, friend, but there hasn't been a good 'Xeno' game since gears. Six times Takahashi has tried to remake gears and each time he's never managed to surpass it.
We'll see if he can actually pull things together with a budget, or if we've been excusing him for no reason for half a decade.
I just want to IV-IX formula back. The gameplay can be entirely different, but a strong hook into a story that actually develops and has meaningful conflicts with tons of boss battles along the way would be a nice change of pace from
>WE HAVE TO GO TO PLACE
>entire game is going to place with lame filler
>OH NO WE HAVE TO DO EXACTLY WHAT THE BAD GUY WANTS US TO
>WE WIN
Toriyama did X-2, not X.
If it were Yoshida alone, maybe. But then you'll have the retarded higher ups at SE pulling him out in the middle of the project for no reason to work on something else. You know that's what will happen. SE is a sinking ship.
Yeah, I'd like another FF set in a mysterious, almost empty world. I'm replaying FF9 now and it's giving me those kinds of feelings because everything beyond the Mist Continent is so strange and abandoned.
ESL go and stay go
The formula back then was:
>GAME MAKES LOTS OF MONEY
>THROW MONEY AT GAME DEVELOPMENT
>GRAPHICS, CONTENT, FAST PRODUCTION
>REPEAT
If you want that formula, go play Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, or any other annualized franchise, because that's the exact same thing FF did back then.
>more fantasy, less machines and no mecha
Has he even looked at the XIV game he is in charge of? Shit is currently like 80% machines and mechs.
There has been, actually. Multiple times. Sure, Gears is unmatched as a VN. Good thing that what matters is being an actual game, as such, Xenoblades shits on Xenogears. But that's not the point of this thread anyway.
>Current game is 80% mecha
>"I don't want the next game to be a bunch of mecha, maybe none at all."
>WHAT THE FUCK WHY WOULD HE SAY SUCH A THING
hmmmmmmmmmm
>makes the climax a twenty minute dungeon
based. tediously long uninteresting final dungeons have been a plague on the series since 7.
>Talk about how I'm sick and tired of the shitty plot structure and game design of modern FF.
>Start talking about how fast FF games used to be shit out as if it's some kinda "gotcha."
Are you having a stroke?
I want a story with actual fucking consequences again and a ton of boss fights that are actually creative. That's it. I'm not pretending the old games weren't flawed. Fuck, IV is kinda shit.
Is there a single FF that doesn't have a long as fuck final stretch?
I honestly think Japan's cultural problems will prevent them from making a world shocking HD game. They're excellent in artistic skill but weak in technical, basically godlike when it comes to prerendering but shit at realtime. Some western expertise would fill the gap but that will never happen.
Hell just having complex or multiple antagonists would do well for it again. Stories fall flat when you can see them developing whole chapters ahead. Previous games did a good job of balancing immediate conflict with long term antagonist arcs, and individual characters had their own conflicts that tied into and justified them fucking being there.
X wasn't bad but it was the start of "Everyone is working together because of the same reason for no real established reason" which makes character development feel flat as fuck.
Sky Fortress Bahamut in FF12 is literally two hallways, unless you want to count Pharos as the final dungeon.
I pray the MC is a blank slate PC with the Job System. Go back to Final Fantasy being YOUR Adventure.
>>Makes the climax a twenty minute dungeon
Praetorium is like an hour long with all the cutscenes
They always have the best fucking style and OST but the gameplay is so fucking shit in every FF. How the fuck can SE survive and not in debt already.
He was talking about Ala Mhigo. When SB came out, Yoshida said that the climax of the story and Ala Mhigo itself would be some kind of new content that was only possible in an MMO. It was a dungeon.
I would absolutely count it, hence why I left it as an ambiguously phrased "final stretch."
AKA, the budget and time ran out.
It was absolutely going to be some kind of non-instanced thing originally.
>X wasn't bad
I'd call X's writing outside of Tidus bad.
XIII and XV have even worse writing, but still.
All blades did was first, copy FFXII and throw on a aborted version of gear's story, then it jumped on the open world bandwagon just like everyone else did, sacrificing good storytelling and characters for bastardized MMORPG game design. Please.
>buh muh story
user's right, Xenogears is a really good VN attached to a shitty JRPG. Meanwhile Xenoblade is a damn nice JRPG while X is one of the few good sandbox games ever developed, shit campaign aside.
2's bad, I'll give you that.
This project has been in development since Heavensward ended. That's when key staff on FFXIV moved to this new project. That "suffering" has been happening already
>a world shocking HD game
After games like Fallout 76, Anthem, Battlefront, and a host of other half baked western HD games, they only need to ship a finished game.
Dragon Quest XI came out six months ago.
Comrades did a great job of just that.
gacha games
maybe but it will be out on time
It wasn't even an eight man dungeon. At least do us that mercy, because despite being a fun dungeon that's pretty, we're never going to run it again.
>I WANT MORE PRAETORIUMS AND CASTRUM MERDIUMS
The only thing wrong with those dungeons is the amount of cutscenes.
it's better for DF if the final encounter is split into a dungeon and a raid, even HW's Fractal takes forever with the extra boss
Too bad Comrades was in FFXV/was a side-story/and an expansion. Would've been neat FF experience not being the hero of the story, but fighting for the hero of the story to one day rise up in a full game.
I always enjoyed stories like that.
People would play those if it weren't for the fact that.
A. They're some of the worst dungeons in ARR, holy shit.
B. Half of it is cutscenes.
We all like The Hobbit, user.
I don't see why not, unless you don't like that they take forever if you want to do them daily as a roulette. And even then, the problem would be solved by simply making them a weekly bonus roulette instead of a daily or simply not doing them.
When will this shithole collapse?
2 has the only good combat in the series
It looks like Xeno will be slowing down soon anyway, even though Monolith have like 2 whole new offices, I would be surprised if they manage to put out 2 new Xeno titles before the next FF is released.
There's nothing wrong with modern fantasies, the issues come up when there's no mystery to the worlds. When they're just fucking regular people doing regular shit but with monster it becomes redundant.
FUCK Final Fantasyy XIV, only the caualest of casual play that crap, anyway.
Devil May Cry 5?
>yoko taro is the writer
i can totally see it happen, yoshida already toyed with the idea
>Comrades did a great job of just that.
shame it was associated with FFXV
>11
11 is auto attack all day and every few hours you can use a skill
That's why the combat being reliant on switching your gear around mid combat works, because you aren't doing anything else
Low level 11 is pretty engaging. I stopped paying for it since I got distracted with other shit a few months ago and didn't make it far. It's a different monster after a Level 50?
Phew; I was just about to re-sub to XIV. Good thing to know that they aren't taking it seriously. Almost wasted $13.
Yoshida could make a good FFXVI.
But the worst thing that could happen is XVI not being experimental or different.
If it’s not as boundary shifting as XV the series is kinda done.
>HD title
in 2019 this should be standard, unless it stands for something different
After XV being a weird mess of ideas, I think Squeenix's best bet is to make a safe-ish/classic-style FF game.
Nobody would care about FF ever again I think
FF has already lost most of it's brand power after the 360 era with the general mess of Fabula Nova Crystallis, the XIII series, XIV 1.0's mess, and Versus/XV's production hell and messy release state. A good, solid class-style mainline game that the series hasn't really seen for practically 2 generations would do more to restore people's faith in it than a weird experimental one.
GIVE ME FRONT MISSION 6.
Left Alive is aight.
Ninja or Samurai in XIV? Also, should I make Sasuke’s Blades Zeta if NIN?
If you want BIG NUMBER and like being a selfish DPS, go SAM
If you want to be the trick attack and LB bitch, go NIN
are you just starting the game or what
TACTICS 2 W H E N
I’m bored since pre ShB lull, and got both at ilvl 390. Only want to bring one of the two into ShB, so yeah.
Why are we still here? Just to suffer?
Stop saying "I mean" at the start of every sentence. It's fucking annoying.
>Dissidia
Non-canon fanfiction
Fuck you one page poster. This manga better be good.
It's damn good, by the same guy as Gundam Thunderbolt if you've read that. I don't frequent one page threads, though, if that's what you're referring to.
Also be warned, the final arc still hasn't been translated last I checked
Agreed it's pretty damn good is it at least making progress though, or is it still stalled out at the end of volume 5?
If it makes you feel any better, I think it's only a matter of time until SE stumbles on the idea that making a new game in the veins of the old could potentially serve to profit them, and once that happens, it's likely we'll get a whole slew of retro styled games with a shitty budget because players are so starved they'll buy them anyway, so long as the gameplay is good.
>with a shitty budget because players are so starved they'll buy them anyway, so long as the gameplay is good.
>so long as the gameplay is good.
I mean, yeah, I would absolutely take that at this point. I loved the old ones, a budget title in modern times that looked like an HD version of the old ones but still had great gameplay is something I could live with pretty happily. I'm way more worried though that it'll be the typical
>ok we have revived the franchise
>by completely changing it AND doing it as cheaply and shittily as possible AND adding in tons of microtransactions
>BRANCH TIME:
>A: it sells well
>HAHA GUESS FANS LOVE FRONT MISSION BATTLE ROYALE WITH MT
>B: it sells like shit
>GUESS NOBODY CARES ABOUT THIS FRANCHISE AT ALL ANYMORE!
fuck everything
According to a quick google search, it's still only up to the fifth chapter of the last volume, and that was done years ago.
I really gotta shill it on the Yea Forums and /m/ translation threads some time.
>Left Alive is aight.
It really, really isn't.
I trust Yoshida over Matsuda and the SE brass, if he's making the next FF he'll do it right. FFXIV has the best storyline of any FF game since XII.
Mixing high fantasy with sci-fi is pretty much a core aspect of the franchise and part of its identity
lore is that the bad guys, garleans, cannot use magic so they use technology to compensate
yoshida wasnt brought on to the team until long after the lore was set and game was launched
Yoshida is LITERALLY SE brass.
