First, since when has minecraft had a trident? Second, Sword/Bow are already done. Pickaxe/Axe both function exactly like the sword in terms of range and whatnot, with the only difference being that they do shit damage in Minecraft. The most unique thing Steve has is that he could probably slap blocks all over the place, an ability which I honestly cannot see being anywhere between absolutely shit or completely fucking broken. Minecraft is just something that works better as a stage than a character when it comes to Smash.

Erdrick feels boring. Never played a Dragon Quest game but if I had to guess he's a mute chosen one who wields a sword, perhaps uses magic and relies on his party members/the power of friendship to save the day from monsters and an ancient evil/a power-hungry royal.
I've no qualms about Steve. Minecraft is a hugely influential game. Yes, he might take away Banjo's spot, but a huge chunk of people have immense nostalgia for the game and even if he has a name as stock as stock can be, his design is iconic.

Sure. Tipped arrows though? I know you'll immediately shoot the idea down, but how interesting would you rate an arrow of levitation, for example? Or weakness? Also, crossbows again (they can store shots and shoot fireworks which explode and do damage, yes they do damage in minecraft too).

Not speaking for shovels or pickaxes, but a stone axe in java does more than a default diamond sword. Either way, these are just an example for moveset potential; you could also have him use fire charges (kinda like that weird mario custom in smash 4) or snowballs just as easily. Fishing rods, TNT, dropping anvils, etc are even more examples.

Maybe they're interesting, I don't know, but nothing I've seen from promotional material or any of the large segments of it in some Nintendo Directs have captured my interest. Call me a zoomer, but I think Steve would bring more to the table than Erdrick does.
I've never seen actively rally behind Erdrick other than supporters of "leaks" or shitposters here, and if people do actively rally behind a DQ character, it's the Slime, who is the de facto enemy mascot for the series. He just feels like a character people want because it's seen as a "necessity", despite the fact that his niche is something that several Smash characters already fulfill. I'm reading that he uses more weapons than just a sword, but I guarantee you if he got in he'd be equipped with one.

I've never played a DQ game but from what I've seen it looks like a decent enough whimsical fantasy series and has a history with Nintendo consoles, so seems like a perfectly fine pick. Erdrick or any DQ rep is fine. Steve is where my problem is, there’s absolutely no issue with a stage just the character. He’s just a sword fighter, possibly with a bow, that can lay blocks (which works better as a stage hazard/assist trophy). You can try to explain away some thrown potions, tipped arrows, or red stone but the fact of the matter is that those don’t scream Minecraft like the other movesets in the game scream their respective series. Every other character pitted against Steve has potential for much better movesets, whether it’s Banjo or Sora.

Erdrick makes himself a legendary one, you are the son/daughter of a pretty badass dude but nothing you do in the game is "oh, because he is one of the legends", on the contrary, you kinda make the legends DQ 1 and 2 will follow. You find the metal to forge the best sword, you go all around literally Earth to get the orbs to resurrect a magical bird. You find the flute to rescue the goddess who blesses your bloodline from there onward. Nothing is given freely because chosen one or power of friendship.
Party members are optional and don't really speak, its a 1988 NES game. The whole story is pretty straightforward really.

Why do rosterfags hate her so? I'm serious, I think she'd be fun (being a bullet hell character, with a fighting game moveset already incorporating this stuff to take from) and whilst she's niche, she isn't literallywho tier to anyone who's been on the internet for a while.

Dragon Quest doesn't sound interesting at all to play, I literally finished 1,2 (GBC) and 3 (SNES) a few weeks ago simply because I was interested in RPG history and the like, and 1 much exceeded my expectations and 3 absolutely blew me away by how good it is and I'd definitely be happy about erdrick. I'm not an RPG baby at all, I played all Fallouts, Planescape, Oblivion, Deus Ex, VtM, FF6,7,4,9; Chrono Trigger etc. But if I had to explain to someone what is good about DQ, I'd struggle to make it seem interesting. All I can say something like "Remember those fairy tales when you were a kid? Imagine playing those, except it being extremely polished, beautiful, thoughtful and 50 hours long"

If you're interested in RPG history, I recommend System Shock 1 and 2.

He predates Gohan and was made when Dragon Ball hadn't even moved fully past Red Ribbon. I don't think he looks like most protagonists from JRPGs from the mid-80s, the focus on a sleeker, cloth outfit was novel for its time, though Link did it first for sure.

By the way, I know she has little presence on Nintendo, so I don't really expect her to get in. I just think it'd be cool.
I mean, Shantae isn't even an interesting pick with any kind of feats behind its IP. Touhou at least has the most fanmade stuff of any franchise except maybe Pokemon.

geno is just a one-off supporting character from one single rpg spinoff from years ago. banjo & kazooie are at least the main characters of all their games. and in general i'd argue banjo was a lot more popular and notable than golden sun, the first banjo alone outsold the entire golden sun series with over 3 million in sales.

i don't know if banjo's actually gonna get in, but i wouldn't put him on the same level as isaac or especially geno.

The problem with Steve and Erdrick relies on 3 big points.
1) The whole possibilities with each of them. Outside Roto/Loto/Erdrick (which btw is mostly loved in Japan but outright ignored by everyone else in other countries), Steve is one of these characters who are difficult to make a moveset that can work for Smash, but now, unlike others, is especially difficult BECAUSE ALMOST EVERYONE ELSE HAVE HIS ARSENAL.
The only thing that could be maybe done is give him the ability to do blocks, and even then, it wouldn't translate well into a fighting game that is now way more agressive than previous entries barring Melee. Hell, the leaker said he'd get skins for Bajo Kazooie, Master Chief and some more shit. Wouldn't Microsoft benefit more for making them into Mii Fighters DLC skins?
2) The "leak" problem. Don't lie to yourself, everyone who is openly against it is in some form expecting someone BETTER than what the DLC leak from 5chan would bring, and I'm sorry for all Doom Guy fans, but I mean it when I say outside of him NO ONE ELSE IN THE 5CHAN LEAK (not counting Joker either) WOULD BRING SOMETHING NEW TO THE TABLE.
3) Almost every other character from Microsoft/Squeenix could bring something more fun as the DLC rep.
Seriously, think about it, wouldn't it be great to hear Master Chief, Banjo or Conker be into Smash? That would sell way too much as the perfect Nintendo vs Microsoft battle finally happening. Meanwhile, don't matter if you like it or not, there's still a lot of characters from Square Enix that could bring more dosh, including Sora, Noctis, Sephiroth, Lara Croft, Lightning, Neku and others.

You cannot dispute the fact, and the facts are that (despite the 5chan leak being pretty much deconfirmed) Steve and Erdrick wouldn't be really good choices for SELLING.

I have played Pirate's Curse, and found it thoroughly mediocre gameplay-wise but with lots of fanservice that added nothing of value.

Sakurai sees Bayonetta as one of the best action games ever and Persona 5 was voted one of the best games of all time in japan.
