Not to sound like a high taste faggot but I actually think Joker has a better design than Rex. Ideally, character design is supposed to convey the idea and personality of a character. Joker's design conveys both these things. He's a suave gentlemen thief and it's easy to tell.

Zero is the perfect Kirby villain and parallel to the protagonist. One look at Kirby tells you he's a nice hero, one look at Zero tells you he's a creepy abomination. And they're the simplest possible designs to get the ideas of them across, which only makes them more effective. Dark Nebula doesn't really get any idea across, and that's not even getting into how the game sets up and executes his character, which is very weak and minimal compared to Zero crashing into the planet, looming over it with his evil eye burning towards you, and his black clouds corrupting your world entirely. Kirby also represents peace and freedom, while Zero represents total control over others. Dark Nebula tries to hit a few Zero notes but does it pretty weakly.

I dropped SMT2 for a similar reason. The story and setting were neat; the dungeon crawling was absolute shit.

I feel if the game's pacing was more even, spending more time for chapters 6-10 rather than 1-5, it would have been better, especially to flesh out character development and themes better. I would also change up a couple scenes right at the end of chapter 10.

Nia's past was pretty dark
Amaltheus past where his mother probably gets raped and murdered is also something. That scene where he sees her with her eyes dead open and he literally murders the perpetrators with a fucking rock was pretty hard

Amalthus was an original spin on the "evil" JRPG pope all things considered. He was mostly intentionally laying the framework for Malos to destroy the world, but in the mean-time even though he wished for the world's destruction and accelerrated it, he was still taking in war refugees and trying to end war to at least make everybody's last days on the planet peaceful.
He kept on trying to see the best in humanity, even going as far to save and raise a war orphan, only to watch said war orphan grow up, become a soldier and kill an innocent family in another war. Even after he realized he hated mankind, instead of trying to kill everyone his first action was to try and reach the heavens and ask god what he should do instead and mistook god's absence as a sign that he abandoned and thus hates humanity too, so he took on a messiah complex to end the world.
