How do you feel about games that force you to backtrack a significant amount to see something unique? Can Yea Forums think of some good and bad examples of this in a game, or does Yea Forums just think it is a bad thing to do?

Tales of Vesperia does this badly. Half of the missable events require you to go back and stay at the inn of towns you already went through hours ago and have no real reason to go back to
I know u don’t care about topic
Please post more goates
Personally I think it's really bullshit you don't even get a good hint about this except for the fact that the character who tells you to explore is also in that same spot after you fight them in this game, but even that isn't usually discovered by the average player.
B-but user... Off topic posting will get the thread banned..
As long as it's irrelevant to the main plot there's nothing wrong with hiding a secret at the end.
Locking you out of the story and making you go through the game again for no reason makes me drop a game 100%.
But goates are always on topic

>Bad backtracking
Nothing new, or just the same enemies with more health and damage.
>Good backtracking
New enemies, the area has changed in some form, your actions when you previously went through the area have had an effect.
Metroidvania type games get a slight pass with this, as you're usually unable to completely explore an area until you get a particilar ability, but working that figurative locked door into the game world properly is it's own challange and some dev's fuck up by making it into a whole new area straight away rather than extending the existing one into it.
Hollow knight does this decently, as between each area is a transition screen of various things creeping in from the new area before you even get to the entrance, from the music to the colour pallete to the little doodads in the back or foreground.
Asriel did everything wrong and deserves to be erased.
there are many things that need to be erased.
