Wuthering Heights is pretty great, try listening to their "Shadow Cabinet" and "Salt". The main vocalist on it is like Dio singing with a charming Dutch accent. Mago de Oz is also rather nice, I liked "Finisterra" and "Gaia" quite a lot. They sing in Spanish, though, if that's important to you.

Wuthering Heighs is pretty nice the vocalist reminds me of Kai Hansen. Too bad he's a fucking asshole.

Can confirm Sabbaton. I saw them when they were openers for the Iron Maiden concert. Their performance was very lively and the had a lot of fun with the crowd. Though their fanbase is cancerous and their music is rather primitive.

I know this is a thread about Power Metal but I was re-listening to this album the other day and in my opinion it is still unmatched as far as Death Metal is concerned. Yellow fever, the trve kvlt norwegian crowd tended to have a weird obsession with japan at the time, lots of the people in the early 90s black metal scene had a weird tendency to plug japanese bands and even had a japanese band on their main label, and lots of them were friends or in contact with jap bands.
varg was unironically into asian martial arts (he's a black belt) and action movies, euronymous had an anime OVA collection and in videos where fenriz has his metal collection in the background there's an entire shelf dedicated to jap metal bands

As someone who listened to exclusively power metal, and could not handle a single song with harsh vocals, I can assure you, if you like the music enough, you'll get used to the vocals too. Also, knowing the lyrics helps if you like to sing along. If you like the folk metal music, I recommend keep listening to different songs, and you'll eventually come around.

Honestly, the biggest hurdle about harsh vocals are the people who treat them like normal vocals and expect there to be a deeper message.

The entire premise behind harsh vocals is the same premise behind operatic vocals. The voice is used as another instrument, the lyrics are secondary. When you listen to metal but treat harsh vocals as an instrument instead of a way to convey words, it's so much easier to enjoy harsh vocals and actually gain a respect for them as a legitimate layer of the song.

The first black and death metal bands outright came out and admitted that the lyrics were intentionally gory/satanic/evil/violent because they thought nobody would understand them, and that the main focus was having the vocals fit with the music.
