Haven't played 4, but I did pay 3. And dear lord, yes it's bad. Combo weapons have gone into the magical realm, freezing and zapping zombies with staves. There's more zombies than ever, but they never feel like an actual threat since they're complete pushovers. The time limit is so generous, it might as well not even be there. I don't remember if they even had time restricted missions, like the first 2. There was definitely way more problems with this shit pile, but it's been years since I've played it and nothing in the game was memorable.

The franchise was handed over to a mediocre studio that had less grasp on the fucking gameplay or tone with each installment.
By Dead Rising 4 we had:

Dead Rising 1 has the best setting, characters, charm, OST. But the game is fairly rough, and very challenging even to just get the good ending.

Dead Rising 2 loses a bit of the charm, but in return has some good QOL changes. The mall/casino gave a lot more content.

Dead Rising 3 is a weird one. First the map is fucking crap, it far too big, and much too brown. It doesn't really have any unique locations to help remember it better. As far as the charm of the game? The first half is just completely devoid of it, I almost quit the game. However I'm glad I didn't, the second half is really good and made me love the main character only slightly behind Frank (DR1). The game does have so much QOL changes that the game doesn't really have anything frustrating, which is welcome.

Dead Rising 4 has a far better setting then 3, and even with Frank back the game just feels off. Like I said the first half of 3 didn't feel like DR, but the second half did. All of 4 didn't feel like it. Basically removing the pychos was a dumb choice. Frank doesn't have his original voice, and he acts different from both 1 and 2otr. The game is still sorta fun to play, it's not frustrating, and I love the idea of a snowed in mall set at Christmas time, but it's just off.

So 3 is worth playing if you can stomach the first half, and 4 is sorta worth it if you go into it like it's not totally a DR game (like if you just take Dark Souls 2 for what it is, and not compare it to the rest of the series, it's still a solid game).

This is a good list. The first game is the only one that just oozes charm, I just wish when they did the remaster the had an optional mode with some QOL changes. It's still my favorite though.

3 disappoints in terms of psychopaths and overall tone, but it's miles ahead of 4.

2 was shit until Off the record came in and saved the day and gave us a proper sequel.

Only played DR1 on xbox 360, I hated escorting the dumb AIs with permadeath being a thing. Saving survivor is not the fun part of Dead Rising, fighting psychopaths and scavenging for items are.

DR3 had some good concepts for bosses, but the fights being too piss-easy soured it.

Nothing near as satisfying as learning Adam's patterns and packing the right gear to take him on.

Coincidentally, all the challenge of DR1's bosses vanish completely after Adam is defeated and you can take his Mini-Chainsaws.

DR 1 and DR2 OTR are the only canon ones for me same with Dead space 1-2 everything else was unnecessary. I prefer OTR over 2 because you actually play as frank again as compared to some literally who muh daughter biker dood.
