So if Splatoon canonically exists within our own future, how did inklings come into existence? They are clearly part human, what happened between our species and squids to make them? Is this like Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet?

Don't think human DNA is ever mentioned in the sunken scrolls or interviews or anything. Just squids and octos who evolved to live on land, and just conveniently look similar to humans for marketing purposes.

I never even played the game lol. But I mean if you look at a spec bio documentary called 'The Future is Wild' where actual biologists predicted the future evolution of animals, they also predicted squids would move to land. But they didn't really look the same.

Sea animals are almost all stupid except for dolphins I guess. Like 99% of intelligent life is on land, so being land-based is probably some sort of requirement for evolving any sort of real intelligence.
