Standard (and Extended) were both completely fucked and Kamigawa was full of parasitic mechanics that made it difficult to incorporate cards from it into kitchen table decks.

The limited environment is still excellent though. I never played block constructed (and unlike you I'm not willing to bullshit some made up shit about a format I never played) so I can't speak to that.
