So I went back and replayed Kingdom Hearts 3 and something really neat just flew over my head the first time around. Sora actually never had the Keyblade passed down to him. It just chose him because Riku went full retard and got BLACKED. Terra passed down the Keyblade to Riku. Aqua passed down the Keyblade to Kairi. Ven passed down the Keyblade the Lea/Axel (all by touching the Keyblade) but Sora never had it passed down to him. Master Xehanort is officially the one to pass down the Keyblade to Sora. That's really fucking kino.

For real though, making the post game Final Mix extra content about Sora rescuing Kairi and showing the consequences of him abusing the power of waking to explain why he vanishes at the end and as a sort of lead into the secret movie/KH4 isn't that stretch of the imagination. Every FM so far has added new story content that alludes to the next game and this would just be like the Secret Episode/playable Epilogue from BBS but super extended.
Of course I don't really expect any kind of development for Kairi but the gap between Sora beating MX and the ending is too noticeable to not do anything with it.

So if there's one thing the series consistently does right, it's the spectacle aspect. Namely, producing impressive and memorable moments that stick with the player and make them remember it fondly despite other flaws in the game. The only other series I can think of like this is Sonic. Despite the games being mediocre at best for decades, you remember the times when you're getting chased by a whale or a truck and the camera pans around to show Sonic outrunning it. Nevermind that the player isn't pressing anything and it's basically a cutscene; the game makes the player feel like they're doing something amazing and they do it in a visually spectacular way.
KH does the same thing. When you use a big finisher on a boss and Sora flies at them and unleashed a set of swings you feel like you're really powerful. You ignore the fact that you're literally just spamming the cross button and Sora is automatically doing dozens of flips and hundreds of magic energy beams are flying everywhere. The zones and boss fights complement this too. The ones based on Disney IPs always take the spots that were used for climaxes in the movies and use them for the similar climaxes in the game so it invokes the same feelings. The OC donut steel zones, because they can't fall back on existing sentiment, instead are made over the top. Really, everything original in game does this (think Sora's 15 belts and zippers). By going over the top it produces a memorable experiences in a way few other games do.

Yeah, but it wasn't a true win. It's not that dissimilar with what went down with Vanitas. Aqua did manage to push Vanitas back. You can see that when Vanitas attacked Ven's body in order to force her hand. But since this was also meant to be Ven's big return, Aqua had to lose. It's unfortunate, but she really doesn't have anyone she's really allowed to fight and decisively beat because everyone's already taken. That's why her biggest enemies are often just Heartless.
You don't age while you're in the Realm of Darkness, so biologically she is completely identical to what she was at the end of BbS.
Sora is 15. He was 14 in KH1, took a year-long and then was 15 in KH2. KH2, Coded, 3D and KH3 happen back-to-back, each occurring immediately after the last game within a short frame of time. coded and 3D happen in the course of less than a day.
