The only reason Sonic got as big as it did, was due to Sega piggybacking on Nintendo's success and popularity. "Genesis does what Nintendon't". The slogan itself acknowledges how much bigger Nintendo was at the time. Everyone got to know Sega as "the rival of Nintendo". The succes of Sega/the Genesis was not enough in itself to make people say "Sega makes good games. I like this company and the products they produce. I'm going to recommend them and spread the word". No they had to shamelessly abuse a competitor who worked it's way up to the top.
And within this idea of using the "rivalry" with nintendo, Sonic was pushed as Marios rival. That's all there is to it.

Yeah, apart from the originals being good games, Sonic got by because of how it was marketed. Just like how Nintendo made R.O.B. and marketed him as a toy instead of a videogame in order to circumvent the horrible PR vidya had after the crash.
