You have to fully master the combat to beat him and until you do he will stand in your way. Beating him is the game acknowledging that you are ready for the challenge ahead.

You can cheese him pretty easily by running around in circles, waiting him to do an attack with large recovery frames and then rush in with a whirlwind slash.

All regular dudes can be cheesed with the charged spiral spear upgrade, they just stand there like dumbasses and take health and posture damage everytime and it only costs 1 spirit emblem. Bonus for the followup sword hit skill being unlocked.

literally, you can not die if you spam L1 on a non-red attack. what, you thought you had to time EVERY L1 press? No.

Spamming l1 is surprisingly effective for the whole game. All you have to worry about are the unblockables which are the minority of attacks anyways.
