People particularly like Steam because it's a very good client, with lots of features, and is very friendly and respectful to users. (They even support Linux, Wine, DXVK, and other open source software).
When you ask people to use other clients you're fucking up their collection, and also asking them to use a shitty inferior client, which is vastly more anti-consumer, and doesn't treat customers nearly as well as Valve.

There are competition it's just that they can't compete with steam when it comes to features, games, and deals.
GoG is an actual competitor when it comes down to it and it does have alot going for it steam can't match, but it's still behind in games and also user friendly features like steam workshop or steam forums.
